All he needs to do is tell Abbas straight I will continue to support your cause but I have two conditions. 1) No more talk about going to the UN because that will personally hurt me and I may have to use the US veto otherwise its going to cost me alot of votes in 2012. 2) I will not let Israel or palestinians place any pre conditions on talks. Everybody goes in on an equal footing and you want something from Israel and Israel will want something from you thats called negotiation. So far these talks have been 1 sided because of Obama's weakness and the fact he is unwilling to address the Abbas problem. Bibi offered a 10 month freeze as a gesture to Abbas to come and agree to talk and Abbas just kept saying not enough more gestures and Obama like a puppet just told Bibi not enough give more so Abbas will agree to talk. For 9 months Abbas just played games and then in the final month before the freeze ended Obama eventually dragged him to the table kicking and screaming looking for anyway out that would leave Israel looking responsible. Talks got nowhere and when the freeze ended Abbas demanded either it continues or he will refuse to talk, then he threatened to quit as president although he retracted that threat. Now its that he will go direct to the UN. If Clinton or Bush were in charge they would have said you want my help you play by my rules and he would have said yes Mr President and stopped playing hardball. Obama now needs to get his act together and start acting presidential with regards to Abbas rather than his puppet and doing as he is told. If he can't do that he can kiss goodbye to his legacy.
