2. The author is full of it
Yahya ,   NY, NY   (11.11.10)
"In Islam, slavery was institutionalized and promoted as a necessity during wars." Maybe some Arab version of Islam "institutionalizes" slavery. The author is very ignorant in this regard. In Shia Islam slavery has always been forbidden. Actually, ban on slavery in Iran started way before Islam and dates back to Cyrus the great. The only religion that promote slavery is Judaism in the commandment number 10. That view was even confirmed by the Jewish leader of Shas, a large member of the current Israeli government, recently. So the author of this article is full of it.

6. an information for Mr. Ghadry:
Salma ,   Palestine   (11.11.10)
Islam says "when have you enslaved people while their mothers have born them free" . If you can't always tell the truth, stop lying. Syrian President is slave of only his presidency chair.

The description of Assad as a slave is inaccurate. Syria needs to rule Lebanon for economic reasons. If Assad was not allied with the Iranians, he would be subjugated by the Americans and Saudis who would not let him rule Lebanon. Worse, Assad is an Alawi, which for the Saudis is a sub-human only a little better than a Jew. Instead, Assad is allied with Iran. He is allowed to subjugate Lebanon, he is protected from the Saudis and the Americans respect him.
11. So much nonsense, so little time
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (11.11.10)
Slavery wasn't "promoted as a necessity during wars"; it was part and parcel of Arabian culture and was given religious sanction as were many practices (e.g. child marriages) by Mohammed himself. Slavery survived as an institution well past the "conquest" stage as Muslims remain active to this day in the slave trade. Syria's alignment with Iran long precedes Bashar Assad's ascendancy in 2000. Syria was the only Arab country aligned with Iran during the latter's war with Iraq in the 1980s. Assad belongs to the Alawite minority in a majority Sunni country and they know what will happen, when they lose power. And no, Yahya, there is no promotion of slavery in *any* of the Commandments. The 10th deals with coveting. And to the Israeli (#10), Syrians have long considered Lebanon *part* of Syria - as many Syrians consider Israel and Jordan "Southern Syria". They don't seek to control Lebanon just "for economic reasons".

(btw, Ghadri means in Arabic: A BACK STABBER) are you a Zionist puppent, a traitor, a treasonious migit against your own country with its enemy? what kind a person you are to sleep in the same bed with the country that is occupying your own lands? sir, you are absolutely nothing, just to say the least
15. Mr Ghadry, please put down the opium pipe before writing
Paul ,   Toronto, Canada   (11.11.10)
Mr Ghadry combines conspiracy theories ("probably hand-picked by the IRGC ...") with his mind reading and astrology abilities ("Assad asked himself a question", ... "the stars were aligned for such a successful outcome") with made-up 'facts' (sorry Farid but support for Hezbollah started under Hafez, not Bashar). He sprinkled on generous portions of non sequitur and spelling/grammar mistakes and viola, the dumbest thing ever written on the internet. Dumber than all the other conspiracy theories combined. Dumber than the celebrity news sites. Dumber than stupid kid who lip-syncs songs on youTube. Dumber than the guy crying "leave Britney alone". Simply, the dumbest thing on the net. Mr Ghadry, the next time you accept payment for writing a propaganda piece for another government, please first put down the crack pipe. People who have found this article informative must have banged their heads a few times too often.

Of course you wont find me on the web, there are millions of Ahmads world wide, duh! however, here is what I found on your good friend, which says it all: " From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaJump to: navigation, search Farid al-Ghadry (Arabic: فريد الغادري) (born on June 18, 1954) is the Syrian-born co-founder and current president of the United States-based Reform Party of Syria, a party of Syrians who wish to see regime change in Syria. Ghadry has functioned as an American defense contractor and businessman, "Frank Ghadry," who represents himself as being born in Lebanon.[1] Ghadry is a member of AIPAC, Israel's main lobbying group in the U.S.,[2] and has strongly supported all of Israel's recent wars in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories" Have a good day, and thanks for getting me to the Wikepedia

23. Very Shameful!
Shia-Muslim ,   Mahdistan   (11.12.10)
if a muslim would have written an article talking about slavery in the old testament (and that is real) everyone would have labelled him an anti-semite.a semitic arab would called an anti-semite because he offends jews/judaism.but here we have an ignorant man lying about the holy Quran and lying that islam promotes slavery.i do not blame the writer as much as i blame ynet.its all good because it shows the extent you are ready to go to even propagate lies in order to fight your enemies.as for the insult against bashar al-assad,the writer is a jealous hater and not worth replying him.he should go and die!!!

25. Shia-Muslim #23 you are full of shit
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (11.12.10)
First off yes there was slavery in the Torah. Very different from the slavery practiced today by Muslims, but it did exist. As for Islam and slavery today. Well the only countries practicing slavery are Muslim countries such as Libya and Saudi Arabia. Don't like it, feel insulted - then stop doing it!
26. Muslim wilful blindness never ceases
Dhimmi ,   Dar al-Harb   (11.13.10)
Muslim commentators here honestly believe Islam doesn't allow or promote slavery? The extent of denial is unending with these people. And to the author, Islam doesn't promote slavery only during times of war. It promotes it in all circumstances. It only ended because in most of the Muslim world because of western-infidel colonialism.
