Not only the family mourns but also the miltiary family and it hits them hard, even those who did not personally know the pilots. At a Navy Air Station in California I worked at, the hospital corpsmen and women who were tasked to find the body parts of downed pilots and collect them wept uncontrollably when their task was done, managing to keep it together until they were off duty. There were a lot of downed pilots back then and it never got any easier to find as many pieces of the pilots for the widow as they could find. It is not for the faint hearted.
