Settlements would be an issue easier to discuss with King Hussain and the palestinians would not have had a say in the matter. Also as they don't eat into large parts of Jordan its hard to say settlements were making a Jordan is Palestine hard to achieve. 2) If we had wanted to go down the 2 state route then we should have started off by saying there will be no deadlines these talks take as long as they take. There will be no automatic hand overs of land what we give must be earned. That would have meant a couple of years of trust building before Israel gave away even 1 inch of land. Then as talks progressed we would slowly give more land and the longer we talked the more trust would develop. If there was terror and talks broke down then when the palestinians got their act together again we could start more trust building and giving up of land. It would have been a gradual process based on trust & actions and as it was gradual it would have stopped individual politicians taking to much of a role. That would have hellped deal with the problems of politicial egos especially with the US president who want their legacy of a deal being signed on their watch ( Obama has a huge ego ) which is part the problem.
