3. Religous women soldiers
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (11.21.10)
These women are doing Kidush Hashem. This gives me hope that we are going in the good direction,to learn to know each other. That s all we need ,in order to appreciate each other, and to live peaceful together.
4. I salute you, Danit Moran!!
Chaya ,   Tel Aviv   (11.21.10)
Kol HaKavod!!
5. Religious eomen wearing pants = an oxymoron
(11.21.10)
6. we all salute
eli ,   ta/ny   (11.21.10)
we all salute these and other paradigm shifting forces within the Jewish people; and the Middle East-all else dwarfs
7. Deborah would be proud
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (11.21.10)
We should never forget the Prophetess Deborah who led Barak in his battle against Cicera. There IS a place for women, even religious women, in the Jewish Army. Ignore those rabbis who argue otherwise.
8. Well done to her - you go Girl!!! And #5
Talula ,   Israel   (11.21.10)
Anyone who picks on her for wearing trousers - can go get a life - she's serving her country - remember? the one God gave us? does it really matter what she wears? #5 - Who are you? the dress code Ranger for religious women in the IDF? Give credit where it's due you pathetic Idiot.
9. @5 where does it say: thou shalt not wear pants?
Suzanne   (11.21.10)
10. bravo, two thumbs up.
ghostq   (11.21.10)
11. to #5 nop female soldiers wear skirts
ghostq   (11.21.10)
part of the uniform, go check it, do that while the girls stand in line up on ceremony stage, the view is better. :P
12. Yeah...
Rachel ,   Israel   (11.21.10)
and 20 years from now we can all read the books written by their kids' therapists on how much fun it was being raised by a mom who was too busy being a soldier to be a mother. Poor kids. Poor us.
13. many orthodox girls wear pants under skirts for protection
Nehama ,   Los Angeles   (11.21.10)
Someone wrote wearing pants is not religious. Most men would not know if we are wearing pants or legginhs underneath and I am orthodox and many of us girls do this because it keeps us warmer and because if we are running/climbing if we fall it reduces cuts/abrasions. Kol Hakavod to these young women finding a way to integrate the army with religious life like the men in a way that is respectful to their values.
14. 9 Suzanne: Scripture says it is an abomination for women to
Rivkah   (11.21.10)
wear that which pertains to men in the laws of Moses. It is also an abomination for men to wear that which pertains to women. King Solomon clarified that in the last chapter of Proverbs. He quoted King Lemuel's mother who warned her son that men should not give their "strength" to women. The word "strength" in that verse means army, defenses, forifications. Put those two references together and you get the meaning: it is an abomination for women to wear battle dress of the military. They should have different attire than males and stay in medical, clerical, and non-combat support technical occupations in the military so as not to disrupt male bonding and/or cause men to jeopardize their missions to protect the women which is what happened in 1948 in Israel when women were equal to men in the military. Changes had to be made because the attrition rate of males was so high when there were women in the units. Attrition means death rates.
15. 13 Nehama, Los Angeles: It would not be appropriate for
Rivkah   (11.21.10)
orthodox women or any women to wear battle dress pants. Read post #14. Wearing women's slacks under a skirt is not breaking the law of Moses for women not to wear that which pertains to men. Neither is a male wearing a long caftan a violation of the law of Moses for men not to wear that which pertains to women. But males wearing a mid-wife's attire (gynecologist/obstretrician) IS an abomination to YHWH. There are certain attires that pertain to men and certain attires that pertain to women and crossing those lines upsets YHWH. What you do does not upset YHWH, wearing women's slacks under a skirt or dress.
16. Wearing trousers
Andrew ,   Somewhere.   (11.21.10)
Someone asks'' where it says that a woman should not wear pants.'' Deuteronomy 22 v 5 says ''The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth to a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment; for all that do so are an abomination unto the Lord thy God.''
17. #14+16
Ze'ev ,   Lod   (11.21.10)
Just one problem. Today pants are not men's outfit. See there are pants for men and pants for women. So this is not a sin since no one is wearing clothes of the opposite gender.
18. Religious soldiers
NYC Girl   (11.21.10)
While I don't share their level of religious observance, I have to say I have tremendous respect for these young women. It certainly can't be easy for them on many levels, but their courage and dedication (as that of all of Israel's soldiers), is admirable.
19. Officers don't wear stripes, sergeants do.
Scott ,   USA   (11.21.10)
Officers in the Israeli army weawr bars and oak leaves.
20. Fine-tuning some missperceptions
Egon B.E. Friberger ,   Brussels, Belgium   (11.21.10)
Together with the letter of Mr./Maj. Yoav Keren, your article on religious women in the army makes some pretty encouraging and enlightening reading for an otherwise gloomy yom richon and a gloomy period of delegitimizing Israel from without and from within.
21. It is simple to solve the problem of draft dodging
jason white ,   afula,israel   (11.21.10)
No service in the I.D.F., then go to prison. Early marriage and an infant to avoid service, then the mother and father go to prison.
22. I agree with you 100% Rivkah #14
Israeli 2   (11.21.10)
The only comment I have is that King Lemuel you spoke of is actually king Solomon ( He was known by many names such as Lemuel, Yake, Yedidia, Ben, Kohelet, Agur.) and his mother was the quen Bat Sheva.
23. Girls?
Dani ,   New York, USA   (11.22.10)
These women should not be referred to as "girls." It infantilizes them when they are deserving our respect and honor.
24. Devorah did not fight in the millitary.
adam ,   Clifton, NJ   (11.22.10)
Why don't you look at Judges 4. This egalitarianism is bad and is extremism in it's own right and against all common sense and the different spheres of influence men and women have. I guess that is why the bible counted the census through MEN 20 years and up as they were the ones most influenced by decisions made by leaders not that others are dumb or bad just they are in a more dependent position. Judges (4:10) Barak mustered Zebulun and Naphtali to Keedesh and 10,000 men ascended in his footsteps and Deborah went up with him. I don't see Deborah leading the army.
25. 22 Israeli 2: Thank you for that information. So it was
Rivkah   (11.22.10)
BatSheva. How interesting.
26. 23 Dani, New York, USA: Girls can refer to females
Rivkah   (11.22.10)
who have not had sex and become women, so it is not derogatory but rather complimentary.
27. draft dodging
noah ,   brooklyn   (11.22.10)
Perhaps if drafting dodgers, including almost all of the haredi, the Tel Aviv bar-hoppers, the American "non-Israelis", and the "arm-chair quarterbacks" outside of Israeli, as well as the Yordim, would perform their duty, the IDF would not have felt compelled to enlist these women. As it is, I am proud of them, and wish them the best in doing their duty. Anybody that doesn't like it can pick up a gun, strap on a helmet and ask anyone of these fine soldiers if they would like to be replaced (I doubt it).
28. woman of combat
a ash ,   jerusalem   (11.22.10)
kol hakavod--better then the haredim
29. 21 jason For life sentence?
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (11.22.10)
Just curiosity.
30. Good News!
John DeLancy ,   Alaska, USA   (11.22.10)
It does my heart good to see these ladies doing what they can for the defense of Israel. At a time when there is precious little good news from the Jewish nation, this is very good news indeed. I do have 2 asides - instead of 'girls' we could call them 'ladies'. That is how I hear military ladies referring to each other as her in the States. Also, for those of us who are worried when the men guarding the walls are women, please remember what the psalmist said: Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it. Except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. So please remember, it is not in our own hands to keep Israel safe. He will use us, male or female, young or old, to do His will, but it is the LORD who is keeping Israel. I am very grateful for the ladies and gentlemen of the IDF for making themselves available for Him to work through them to keep Israel safe.
