Nixon was actually a friend of Israel. Apart from Truman, he was the only President who helped Israel greatly when he ordered massive supply of needed weaponry to Israel despite the opposition of the AntiSemites in his administration during the 1973 War when Egypt and Syria attacked Israel.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with respect to Richard Nixon. He was NOT a friend of Israel at all. He withheld needed spare parts from Israel during the Yom Kippur War in 1973 until Israel had encircled the Egyptian Third Army and cut their supply lines. Also, Israeli troops had crossed the Suez and were poised to march on Cairo, with nothing standing in their way. And that is exactly what then-Prime Minister Golda Meier told Nixon would happen. Nixon did not want Israel to take an Arab capital, so he sent the needed spare parts. No, Nixon was no friend of the Jews, and certainly no friend of Israel. But the best thing to emerge from that nasty episode in U.S. / Israeli relations is that Israel developed its own armaments industry. Israel will never again be dependent in wartime on anyone but itself, particularly a quirky United States. In fact, it has developed quite a formidable arsenal. Given the neighborhood Israel lives in, she needs it.

I cannot really enter this discussion in a big way except to bring in what I seem to remember of Abba Eban's account,in his autobiography,I think. According to Eban,it was the State Department and the Pentagon that were reluctant to resupply Israel during the 1973 war.He states that Nixon overruled them and demanded that the US air-force's entire fleet of very large transports planes be filled and sent IMMEDIATELY;for the first time, ever, that entire fleet was in the air simultaneously,on the way to Israel. Make of that what you wish, but it does seem to me that, despite his real faults and misdeeds,Nixon had real achievements to his credit in the field of foreign policy. He ended the Vietnam war and ended the cold war with China.Certainly,no harm came out of those and the world is a better place for them. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
