2. With Such a Pronouncement
Michael ,   Boston, MA   (11.23.10)
He should convey a Beit Din and sentence them. There should be no need for secular authorities to endure the wrath of this community for enforcing secular law. Let them be sentenced, as they live, with the full power of Religious Law.
3. About time!
Israeli grandma   (11.23.10)
There have been strong suspicions for years about these yeshiva scams, but the scale of this one is horrifying. Lets hope that these criminals will not get off with a "deal" with the courts as is now so fashionable in Israel. Worst of all is that such crimes are totally against what is supposed to be learned by Jews in yeshiva or by any Jew who lives by Torah commandments. Of course the venerable Rabbi Ellyashiv is in shock!
4. Whats new they`ve been doing it for years
Avi ,   Israel   (11.23.10)
Course a good stonning in the village square could be in order for the accused.
5.  In reply #2 not quite Michael
Avi ,   Israel   (11.23.10)
While i agree with your comments please remember Israel is not a state run according to Jewish law, we have a system of law based on democracy of which every citizen is obliged to live within the legal framework. Although this particular scam in only the tip of the ice berg.
6. time for a little vigilante justice
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (11.23.10)
i'm finding it hard to believe that this was going on as long as it was and as systematic as it sounds and leadership was unaware, especially knowing how much control they have in just about every aspect of their followers' lives. it doesn't pass the smell test, for sure.
7. Kol HaKavod. Rabbi Elyashiv is a true tzadik.
Jake ,   USA   (11.23.10)
8. 4Avi Whats new?Blame King Salomon
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (11.23.10)
He claimed :there is nothing new under the sun.
9. Curious, did they pocket all the money or use it for
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (11.23.10)
tzedakah? Still a crime but might get them a lessor sentence.
10. 9 Bunnie
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (11.23.10)
In the Tora we learn that Hashem rejects zedaka that comes from stolen money.I don t think the Rabbi would have given a smaller punishment.
11. Witch Hunt
Jew ,   LA   (11.23.10)
There are thousands of Yeshivot in Israel, while 6 individuals get arrested, and everyone gets ready for Haredi Hunting season. Even if you assume there are hundreds of others like them, that is still much less embezzlement than what goes on in the secular non-profits. Haredim never claimed to be superior people, they simply claim to be a society trying to live by Torah tradition (which they see as superior). The reason there is a commandment not to steal, is because people in all societies steal. Let go of your obbsession with them and wory about getting your own act together. How many hours do you spend on Facebook instead of working? Thats stealing!!!
12. #10 *nod* It's still theft.
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (11.23.10)
And in this case, theft in the supposed name of Yeshiva students - I doubt anyone asked them if they wanted others to steal in their name, or to have this stain on them and on Yeshivas thanks to the utter stupidity and lack of care of a few criminals.
13. 12 What is "nod"Roman?
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (11.23.10)
14. #13 A movement one does with one's head.
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (11.23.10)
It generally signifies agreement.
15. very interesting
Eddie ,   london UK   (11.23.10)
It is quite unusual for self criticism in Haredi world. I wonder why this is different from all other nights? It is perhaps because for the first time, there is a popular uprising by Israeli Jews against haredi manipulation.
16. Jewish law
arie ,   modiin   (11.24.10)
The Rav is 100 correct that jews that create a people by chillum hashem by unethical deeds is as bad as the three cardinal sins (murder profanity and idol worship). But the issue also inculdes Tax Evasion. The molddorf embezelment is good example. Any scandal where othodox Jews break the law and causes a chillul hasem. Note that it only becomes a chillul hasem if you are caught so before you enter into some questionable deal ask the following question if I am caught or found out will I be creating a chillul hasem. For example getting funds for torah study is good from the secular state. but not by creating a chillul hasem via stealing.I am 100% sure the people envolved were under impression they were doing G-ds will in getting funds for Torah schools .

You do not know the orthodoxe from inside, only from the papers. We are taught to criticise ourselves before criticising others.
19. 14 Roman Thanks
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (11.24.10)
20. Arie, #16 - I beg to differ
Michael Davison ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (11.25.10)
A crime is a crime whether the perpetrators are caought or not. Hilul hashem is committed whether you are caught or not. The way you state it, it sounds like the 11th Commandment is "Thou shalt not get caught"--as long as you don't get caught, everything is legal. What kind of lesson is that?
21. Ora , nothing better to do than sitting
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.25.10)
the whole day on your PC ? When i say "better" it does not mean "good deeds" , it means to see friends , family , walk , visit and so on . When i read some tb's , i'm disgusted from those people [ not you ! ] and have more than enough of this .
22. 21 Charles
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (11.25.10)
I am very happy for you that you have better things to do .You have such a great potential, that when you talked about "better things" anything else than "good deeds" did not came in my mind.I saw you in my imagination helping children who had a difficult childhood. You could be a fantastic help to them.Because you have lots of energy and can be very charming when you want. Enjoy,Charles, every minute of your life, the way you feel is best for you. I like very much to read the comments here in Ynet.It keeps me in touch with people i have not the possibility to encounter, and also to try to understand other point of views than mine.I learned a lot debating with you.Thank you for your post.

ORA ,   Jerusalem   (11.25.10)
I agree absolutely with you.A real G-d fearer knows that even if he is not caught,he can impossibly hide from G-d.And "you shall not steal" is a G-d commandment that does not depend on being caught or not.If all orthodoxe were G-d fearing they would be an example to follow.
