1. Thanks to Abbas and the PA
Elizabethlynne ,   Dallas, TEXAS!   (12.04.10)
The kind help offered and given by the PA is evidence that these two countries have the ability to live as peaceful neighbors. Warmest thanks to the PA and Abbas for their compassion.
2. leadership and fire
alexi   (12.04.10)
Yes, Israel has been unprepared and that will be dealt with after the fire is put out. But bibi and lieberman have done a sensational job identifying the problem, publicizing it, enlisting quickly the support stocks of flame retardant and aircraft, and bringing on more capacity like the giant american tanker. This kind of plane is what israel needs as well as 12 other assorted bombers and tankers. Ater all of this disaster is over, sit back israelis, think, would you really want olmert and livni directing the traffic. No you would not. They would be slow off the mark, they would not know exactly what to order and they would beg rather than request. And Olmert said he would not resign because he would fix the 2006 problem part of which was to bring on better home front protection including fire control. Well he and livni did not. haaretz staff should remember that once the fire started, how well bibi and leiberman sprang into action. keep this in mind the next time you go to vote. Thank you to all of the countries responding to request for help Turkey, Greece, France, UK, Bulgaria and Russia in particular, the US and all of the others. Israel will remember very well the support.
3. News Travels Slowly
Steve ,   Ra'anana   (12.04.10)
So it took more than two days for Abbas to give us a call. Let's see how many seconds it takes for him to react to any supposed wrong doing by Israel and blast us to the world's media and at the UN.

5. Hey Steve ....
Ahmad ,   Westbank, Palestine   (12.04.10)
In case you are not aware, there is a tradegy taking place around you...put politics aside for a second! And for your information, the Palestinian Authority was not only one of the first sides to offer assistance, but it also sent firefighters to the north as the fire was spreading ... this happening during the first few hours of the tradegy! This was coordinated with the Israeli authorities ... I suggest that you get informed before doing some PA Bashing ! While you are sitting there behind your computer saying non sense, Palestinian Firefighters are on the go helping your people and Abbas is just offering MORE assitance...

7. bibi better start to place orders for
jason white ,   afula,israel   (12.04.10)
firefighting aircraft this week. There better be ads in the paper for people to go to train to become firefighters this week. There better be orders for fire retardant chemicals placed this week. We do not have time for the lousy politicians and their flunkies to waste. The same goes for those tight wads in the min of fin. And the minister of the interior should do what the Japanese used to do when they lost honor, hari keri and use a meat knife.

11. Ahmad, i'm sure you are senciere, but
Daniel ,   Formerly Israel   (12.04.10)
you should be aware that while the massive Carmel fire (which has been ruled an act of negligence) has raged, at least half a dozen fires have been set in Negev and Galilee by suspected Arab arsonists, threatening more lives and further depleting israel's fire-fighting resources. I want to believe that Israel's Arab neighbors truly wish to help it in this time of crisis, but there is evidence that they are actively seeking to cause it more harm and use the tragedy as a P.R. stunt. By the way, please don't forget that even as its resources are thus strained, Israel continues to supply goods and utilities, including running water for the West Bank (and also Gaza)
12. Israel & PA should have a joint fire fighting force

13. # 11
Birdi ,   Israel   (12.04.10)
There is to be an investigation into these fires, when we get the final answer we will know. NOTHING has been decided yet & no one knows the answers now.
14. Acceptance of help with caution
Alegrio Maduk ,   philippines   (12.05.10)
Help should be with security measures. Number of airplanes and its pilots and support services. All others must be done purely by the Jews..Airplane should be accompanied by a Jew pilot for transfer of technology for future firefighting.
15. politics and optics
tom ,   toronto, canada   (12.05.10)
politics and optics are flip sides of the same coin. mr netanyahu needs to be seen to be doing something, in order to satisfy the (political) outcry in israel. the decision to buy firefighting planes is probably a bad one, considering that israel may only need them once every 5-10 years, and meanwhile they will spend most of their time idle, or waiting to help put out fires in other countries. a pool of firefighting aircraft across neighbouring countries (or even worldwide) makes perfect sense, and should be implemented, but it would inevitably be highjacked and used against israel, the way the un and the international red cross have been. israel could probably develop its own capabilities. based around the existing tankers in the iaf fleet, with relatively little conversion. they already have tanks installed, and they only need a suitable release system to be installed. multi-purpose aircraft increase utilization and reduce capital and maintenance costs. but it would provide a lot less in political benefits, and so i doubt that it would ever make it onto the agenda.
