1. While they are at it get a job and serve in the IDF
Avi ,   israel   (12.07.10)
Every year, the Israel Defense Forces loses 13% of its potential draft, because of the arrangement under the Tal Law exempting Haredim who study Torah as a way of life - and do not work - from army service. By the year 2020, estimates the army, it will be losing 20% of its potential draft each year, because of the relatively faster growth of the Haredi population. Already, 60,000 ultra-Orthodox men who would otherwise have been drafted are studying in yeshiva: They will continue to get deferments each year until age 30 (at least ). Beyond the military cost, the arrangement of full-time Torah study costs the nation NIS 7 billion a year in allowances and lost output, because they don't work. Sixty thousand men, exempted from army service, at a cost to sacred values (equality, army of the people ) and hurting the economy, and Israel's military strength as well As a tax payer i demand a refund !
2. Brilliant! If they can hold a hose, they can hold a gun
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (12.07.10)
Thank you Arye Deri for showing the Jewish nation that the yeshiva students can indeed serve their country in the IDF. The big lie is that these yeshiva students are protecting the Jews by studying Torah. Of course they are! The lie is that you can only study Torah and can't do anything else, like serve in the army and hold a job to support your family. My community studies Torah AND serves in the army AND works for a living. It's time to stop the welfare payments to Shas. GET A JOB! That's what all the great sages of all the ages say.
3. I have a better idea
Carl   (12.07.10)
Let them go in the army like all the rest of us. After the army they can get a job like the rest of us and pay taxes like the rest of us. No group has done more damage to Judaism in the last 50 years than the haredim.
4.  Haredim firefighters !!!!!!!!!
Sagi   (12.07.10)
They are not capable of downing a mosquito with spray.
5. Looks like Deri learnt a thing or two while in prison
Haim ,   Tel aviv   (12.07.10)
6. #1 Avi, for once show some positive response to this innova
Jae ,   Lynn US   (12.07.10)
innovative and timelly idea. Please simmer down the repetitive negative droaning, its like a fly in your face who never leaves. Do unto others as you have done unto you, right? The world cant be all bad. Religion cant be all bad. Materilaism, secularism cant be all bad. Youre hatred is bad for you on a health level, mental and physical. Take the good dude, and move on.
7. A Timley and neccesary idea! This is how its done!
Jae ,   Lynn US   (12.07.10)
Good for you Aryeh. How you spell redemption? Tshuvah. Seculars, people can fix their mistake. Same for youi religious ones (but I think you know that as its in the Torah)
8. Cynics: Take baby steps. Youre personalities of same mold as
Jae ,   Lynn US   (12.07.10)
extreme hareidi. You hsould get a room and trade outfits and facial hair, no one would know the difference. our both xtreme. CHILL dawg....have some Love. People are still people. I cant believe I have to say that. Id think secular folks like you would undertsand, but the level of hatred tops even pro-terrorists like salma et al. Shocking and grave if true.
9. Whats with the Negativity People? Steps int he right directi

direction. Journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. You going to call Lao Tsu an idiot too?????????? Good grief.
10. #3 Id say the far left has done WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYY more damage
Jae ,   Lynn US   (12.07.10)
pieces now, supreme court, power holders, media, narrative all have brought Israel to its current position- on its knees more often than on its feet. Because of the priority of appeasemnt which is the leftist mantra when it comes to those who want us as weak as possible.
11. Let them first serve the country . and prove
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.07.10)
they can use their hand for other things than turning pages in BS books . Let them prove that they are able to do something different than making babies to their women [ who sometimes are still in age to play with dolls ]
12. #6 Jae we live with the consequences not you
Avi ,   Israel   (12.07.10)
We have to live with the rotten fruits not you. The Harideem do not accept the rules of the game - equal work, equal pay and equal duties. They said, 'No, we have a special status in which we do not work and we do not pay taxes and we do not defend the country; you defend it for us. Wel lnews flash we are no longer prepared to fund this so called life style of theirs. Do tell enlighten us Jae where were you in the last war? Sitting on your backside writing talkbacks ? while i was fighting for my country. So thanks but spare us the lectures from the lobby of the Hilton.
13. Oh look, the ex-con has piped up
Talula ,   Israel   (12.07.10)
What better person is there to sort out our problems than an ex-con who was convicted of taking $155,000 in bribes while serving as our Interior Minister and sentenced to 3 years in prison. I feel so safe with the likes of Deri, Yishai and the douchebag Yosef - spirting out advice....NOT! Round up all the yeshiva students, put them in the IDF or make them work. The Torah has been around for thousands of years, it's not going anywhere, and will be there when they get home. I also think God will love them more for proactively taking part in protecting the land he gave us.
14. Telavivoid draft dodging chug.
mic ,   Israel   (12.07.10)
Hi Avi, Thanks for the math. Didn't I just hear that around 20%+ of the Telavivoids are evading the draft. What's their excuse? Would you please give us an updated total? Thank you.
15. #14 Mic naturally defends the parasites
Avi ,   Israel   (12.07.10)
Gee i guess the truth is a bit to much for you to handle. Was wondering who was going to be the official spokesperson for the parasites, now we know. Hate to break it to you but i belive everyone should serve their country, whether they be harideem of leftist peacenicks. You and your type love to make headllines such as Bar Rafaeli etc not serving in the army , so why go after one small fish when you can cast your net in Bnei Brak and catch a shoal ?
16. Fabulous idea!
safta of 12 ,   Israel   (12.07.10)
17. #6 - LIKE!
israel   (12.07.10)
avi is always writing the same thing - i think he have issues
18. not allowed due to yichud
david ,   uk   (12.07.10)
19. Yeshiva Students are the REAL Firefighters 24/7
Shalom   (12.07.10)
24/7 of the fierce fires that rage from the sins of the secular. These Firefighters save lives (make BTs). The seculars have to be trained not to ignite fires.... This is what Arye Deri meant.
20. #6Jae - get a grip, Deri does not represent Shas
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (12.07.10)
This ex-con is not in the Knesset, and is not in the Shas leadership. Two weeks ago Shas kicked out a sitting MK who had the temerity to suggest that haredim work for a living (as is taught by the great Jewish sages). Cynicism and negativism are indeed called for, because Deri's call will land on deaf Shas ears. It's not clear to you sitting thousands of km away in the USA, but the reality here does indeed reflect the cynical comments. And comparing this issue with the left is like comparing apples and hubcaps.
21. AD & public service
traintalk ,   northern israel   (12.07.10)
Hopefully he will return to public office, but, even if not, he can still pull his weight this way although he should have written the article himself. I wonder if his thoughts on this are more nuanced than appear.
22. Advice from a criminal...
Moshe ,   Jerusalem   (12.07.10)
Hasn't DERI done enough damage to this country? Hasn't SHAS done enough damage to this country? Shas- Hebrew for "mafia" and Yosef is Capone and Yishai is Frank Nitti. Deri- Bugsy Moran- on the outside trying to get back into the syndicate....
23. #12 Avi. The shoes fit both feet. Rules of the game?
Jae ,   Lynn US   (12.07.10)
You mean The Seculars do not accept the rules of the game? The game the Seculars IMPOSE on the religious charediem? Its always fun to play a game when you control the rules Avi. Think outside the box. Are you aware the secular made the game and demand everyone play it? It would work better if you worked with the hareidm instead of slamming them at every turn. I suppose the same philosphy you bring to your family and whip youre kid by force to get him "in line". Force doesnt work, you have to work with the other party, respect him, know he has sterngths and youll find theres a lot more to talk about. Know one learns by force. Its not a good teacher. Argue the points, not whether I am here or not, thats intelectual laziness.
24. Too many all or nothing mindsets on here. So extereme!
Jae ,   Lynn US   (12.07.10)
Get your foot in the dfoor and then you can open it. Deris sage advice (and by the way Judaism touts the ability to reform oneself, to change oneself for the better, so the TB's that try to drag Deri in the mud are such drivel. Argue the point, not the man. Let God be judge not you) is an oportunity to introduce the haredi world into the worl of contributing physically to the state. That is a GOOD thing. First you crawl then you walk, you dont go from crawling to sprinting guys! Rather than curse, better to support this innovative idea. Let it gather momentum . If you shoot it down you have yourselves to partially blame for not helping the haredim and seculars get out of the impasse.
25. The ganev, advising the ganavim
arthur   (12.07.10)
To # 1, Avi, Israel. It is a stupid law, passed by a stupid govt, serving stupid people and used by ganavim. It's costing the govt billions, taken from hard working citizens, so filty characters can enjoy a life void of achievement, of contribution, of belonging. Why don't they ask their hachem to foot the bill. He must be loaded after 1000's of years on the throne
26. 23 Intellectual laziness or
Secular ,   Israel   (12.07.10)
the comforts of having an easier life outside Israel. Seriously, you have absolutely NO busines commenting on what goes here until you move here. It isn't your city that is being smashed to pieces - it's not your city being set alight by these thugs and vandal Haredim and it's not your money that pays for the repairs to damages. So either put up, or shut up.
27. TRAINING YESHIVA BOYS
YEHUDA AVNER ,   JERUSALEM   (12.07.10)
WOULD IT BE A SIN IF THEY WERE ALSO TRAINES TO WORK
28. #26 The Jewish state belongs to all Jews not just you
Jae ,   Lynn US   (12.07.10)
Thats why since its inception Diaspora Jews have given more billions into the Jewish homeland than you or I can count. One could argue if Israel's existence would occur without the aid of their brethren in politics, Zionism, and fiscal influence in the wolrd. Heck even Jewish solderis from other copuntires fought and helped Israel win its independence. People who contribute to Israel contriobute in many ways. You are not the only one paying thousands to Israel; diapsora Jews pay billions to Israel in its economy, export, bonds, tsedakah....so having put up I can now ask you to fermer la bush.
29. 28 Jae
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.07.10)
For you paying is the same as paying an insurance police . This in case of .... you will have where to flee . An open door , Europe's Jews had'nt .
30. 29 Charles. That would be incorrect
Jae ,   Lynn US   (12.07.10)
I dont know of any insurance policy where I attend rallies to help Israel on colege campuses that are virulenty anti Israel, sometimes no thanks to the foibles of the leftist power elite's decision making and priorities the past 62 years. I also know of no insurance policy where I pay 10% of my income to it..........every year and get no financial benefit in return. There have been millions like me int he 62 years of Israels REbirth.
