You're right that it's the Dutch government's responsibility to look after its citizens. Bolkestein is actually doing this job, raising the issue to the agenda in such a way that even left-wing "anti-Israeli" parties cannot agree with his statement. He provoked a reaction even from the Israel's biggest "enemies" in Dutch parliament in favour of tougher action against anti-semitic behavior. I think if you would have read the article well, you would see that Bolkestein is in fact not anti-semitic at all. If he's "something", he seems to be a lot more against Muslim influence in the Netherlands. You can disagree with Bolkestein's style. I actually think what he did is really smart, 'cause this way he at least makes everybody think about what's really going on. And hopefully will make people act more determined against anti-semitism. He is using his freedom of speech in a way he choses. As for your last point. You can't judge the spirit of a nation solely on the amount of Jews that were deported during the Second World War. There are a lot more factors contributing to the so-called collaboration of a nation. If you would base your judgement on the Dutch on the amount of Righteous amongst the nations Yad Veshem has awarded to Dutch nationals you would be drawing a completely different conclusion.

If Bolkestein were that much against Moslem influence in the Netherlands, he should have called for the expulsion of Moslem elements, not raise the specter of expulsion of the Jews. I can appreciate and I do respect your interpretation that he was merely trying to point up the serious problem through subtletly, but I don't buy it. Most people simply aren't all that smart to be able to read between the lines. Irrespective of his intent, he said what he said. And his comments have, sadly, generated a fair amount of support. What does that tell you? As to "judging the spirit of a nation," I note for the record that the vast majority of the Jewish community of the Netherlands went up in smoke. Literally. Denmark, they were not.

Thanks for you reply. The fact is, that within the Dutch parliament, he didn't raise any amount of support on the idea that Jews should emigrate to Israel or the US. What his statement did generate is a debate on how Dutch society should deal with anti-semitic aggression. And the reason for the high amount of Dutch Jews deported doesn't solely lie in the fact that the Dutch were so eager to get rid of their Jews as opposed to the Danish who protected them. That's why I point out the amount of people that have been recognized by Yad Vashem as righteous among the nations. They were awarded that because they protected Jews by risking their own lives. The reason why there are far more Dutch people considered "righteous" than for instance Danish, has also to do with the severity of the regime installed by the Nazis in Holland (Seyss-Inquart), 'cause they really had to fear for their lives for protecting Jews. I'm not at all trying to say that the Dutch have been "so clean" during the war, but I am saying that judging the "righteousness" of a nation solely on the figures of Jews deported is, in my eyes, an over-simplfied view. May the Jews be safe from anti-semitism and may an open dialogue bring more understanding to all the nations in the world.
