As someone named for a Holocaust victim I applaud Yad Veshem for this statement. I'd like to be able to applaud the Justice Minister, the Religious Services Minister and those representing the state's legal system. But I can't because they are all silent. So it's up to us, we the people, who these Ministers and the system and the muncipal rabbis all serve. Both Ministers should call on those other senior Haredi Rabbanim who in the last day or so refused to sign the petition favouring discrimination against Arab citizens. It is amusing to see the Ynuts here trip over themselves to try and justify this openly racist letter signed by rabbis which prohibits the rental or sale of property to non-Jews. Firstly this racist letter applied to all "non-Jews" and not just "Arabs" eg: it also applies to migrant workers. Secondly the Ynuts so-called 'argument' that Israeli Arabs are all trying to 'destroy Israel' or that 'Arab Islamists do not contribute to Israel' is entirely erroneous and inherently racist. In essence this racist letter targets ethnic minorities solely because they are not Jewish, the justification given within this letter to prohibit the rental or sale of property included fears of intermarriage and blasphemy as well as the claim that "among non-Jews one can also find enemies who may endanger the lives of Jews". In some regards this letter is similar to the policies of Nazi Germany towards the German Jewish minority in that the Nazi Germans also feared intermarriage and often cited Jews as a 'danger to German society' but the prime difference is that these Rabbis issued this letter based on religious racism rather than ethnic racism. I would also point out an obvious truth, these racist rabbis who are trying to discriminate against non-Jews are the same rabbis that would gladly see secular Israel devolve into a repressive religious state where men and women are segregated, where children are forced to study the Torah at the expense of a basic education, where women are second-class citizens and have to cover themselves up in public and where Israelis are judged by and discriminated against based on how 'kosher' they are. As the famous quote goes: "They came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up..."

The books attributed as Torah (five books of Moses as they claim)supposedly from the mouth of G-d, state that there are rules for redeeming a Jewish slave sold to a non-Israli and how to go redeem them from the non-Israeli that lives in the land. From the passage it is clear this is a rich goy owning property. So if the Levis could do this, why are the Rabbis ignoring our history and the book THEY say is Torah from g-d? Additionally, Levis wrote rules on the charging of laborers that live in the land and married daughters for their food and later that they could not eat the holy food. So once again the Rabbis are touting themselves over what Levis did, and Torah states it is the Levis job. No where does write the service could go to non-Levis. What gives Rabbis? Certain questiones arise here. Is liberal democracy a basic Jewish value? You don't seem to agree on that. Is it fair to to place a rabbinical opinion about halacha on a level with state legislation forbiddning Jews to sell or rent to non-Jews. As a citizen you are free to listen or not listen to the rabbis and you should certainly be free to sell or rent to whoever you decide to sell or rent your property to, that is if you adhere to liberal democracy all the way. And finally: Can Israel survive as Jewish state in ME and at the same time be a fully-fledged liberal democracy?

Christian, you don't know what you are talking about. You live in different environment, and your country is not surrender by enemies...yet. You can talk about liberal democracy, but on my opinion it's a big BS and nothing else. And it's also funny to hear something about liberal democracy from the person, who live in the country with socialists government. Most of people in your country got their apartments or houses from the government and it's government to decide who would live in historical part of Stockholm and who not. By the way we have democracy, which means we have right to vote, we have social security, we have parliament, we have law, we also have army, who keep us safe. Not one of Arabs country have this kind of democracy. They maybe vote for their leaders, but most of time their votes is a simple fraud, because everyone knew who will win. Even in Sweden you hardly have a liberal democracy, because liberal democracy is not real. Every country and every government have a law and rules, especially socialist governments. Halacha or not, Israel is NOT a halachic state and I hope it never will be. Israel is a secular democracy. The Rabbis can make any statement they want, but they collect a salary from the Israeli tax payer, Jew and Arab alike, so they must accept and obey non-discrimination laws. Your talback reminded me of a debate in the Swedish Parliament(Riksdagen) before 1939 on economics and socialism. A virulently antisocialist member asked permission to speak and was very critical of what the great and very learned labour leader Rickard Sandler had said on this subject. The said member finished with saying that he had tried to understand Das Kapital of Karl Marx but in vain.
