Easy to say Mark, but as you well know many people will just say nothing until it becomes as commonplace as cars on the street. I was in a store some time ago and saw Middle Eastern Muslim family shopping. The father and children, both boy and girl were not unlike anyone in the store. They wore casual clothes in the norm, but the mother was swathed from head to toe in a burka like outfit with a veil. I have to say, I was offended for the woman's sake. The father looked as if he was going to the beach and since it was a warm day, I wondered how it was that he thought having his wife in that getup made him a god fearing believer. The unfairness spoke of the usual male driven hypocracy of this kind of cultural nonsense. If he was such a religious man, he should have to wear a bag himself, but no. Lerida is not the first town, Barcelona introduced the law some time ago. The issue is not exactly a new one either- many countries have laws about hiding your face. So far they have not been strictly enforced- it is a matter of time. Facemasks,, scarves hiding the face for men and women etc.. the burqa is just specifically mentioned- probaby because some muslims think the laws do not apply to them. Burqas also are used to segregate woman from society- in an equal rights society this is a sign of slavery.

I don't see any harm in women covering themselves up from the neck downward - if that's what they want. To ban women from choosing to wear a burqa and wrap this ban in a fight for women's equality is laughable. Here comes Big Brother telling women what they can't wear. Just as bad as those who tell these women they *must* wear the burqa. A face covering ban is reasonable. There are already laws on the books in many countries prohibiting people (men and women) from being in public areas with masks, or other coverings. Prohibiting people from wearing masks is a public safety issue. The prohibition, in most countries, was in place long before the current issue of women wearing niqabs (face-coverings). Niqabs should be prohibited under the same laws that prohibit wearing masks.
