1. Missing the point
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (12.14.10)
The extreme-Left's hatred for Jews in Judea and Samaria has nothing to do with peace or demographics. The extreme-Left simply wants to destroy their opposition and rule Israel unopposed.
2. I do not get the idea...
Eli ,   Raanana   (12.14.10)
What is the author trying to say? That we annex Area C? What happens to the rest? Will the Palestinians be able to create a viable entity on the remaining territory? Or should the situation remain as it is? Then what? Can we keep the Palestinians without voting rights? Sorry, I do not quite got it. Maybe not enough coffee in the morning.
3. Good piece!
E.   (12.14.10)
Dr. Moshe Dann, so are there any polls examining how many Israelis support annexing Area C? Please read my talkbacks in Yoel Meltzer's article "Thank you, Tom Friedman," which came out yesterday on Ynet that outlines an alternative to Palestinian state, which is a good companion piece to this article, since I suggest Area C has to be annexed to prevent a unilateral Palestinian state.
4. "... leave things as they are..."
berlonski ,   berlin   (12.14.10)
... is the best recipe that one day these things will blow in your face. Obviously for Israelis that's for the moment the most comfortable situation. But the price is mainly paid by the region A and B people, citizens of a non-state on "disputed" territory, and actually under control by Israel. But obviously the author doesn't give a shit about his direct neighbours.
5. Another aspect of the situation.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (12.14.10)
I would strongly urge taking a look at the website for HaShomer HaHadash & listen to the speech by Yoel Zilberman (video clip). The video clip is also posted at Israpundit & Daled Amos. Anyone who thinks that a withdrawal from Judea & Samaria will bring ''peace'' or have any positive result at all should have their head examined. The reality is that such a withdrawal leading to the creation of a Palestinian terror state will intensify the conflict, it will be only the beginning of a new phase of the conflict. We should harbour no illusions - the goal of the Arabs is the end of Israel & any Jewish presence in the Middle-East.
6. Re #2
E.   (12.14.10)
Please follow my links in post #3. I answered all your question.
7. Excellent -- need to be said again and again
Sarah ,   Israel   (12.14.10)
Wish I could remember who did the study, but this same conclusion was reached by a couple of demographers about two years ago. This is critically important information and needs to be said again and again. We must annex Judea and Samaria. There simply is no reason not to.
8. Interesting
Yoad ,   Haifa   (12.14.10)
So your idea is to create a Palestinian banthustan on areas A and B while Israel annexes area C. Let's see how long we survive under heavy international sanctions.
9. Fallacies of viable contiguous state needs to be dealt with
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & NY   (12.14.10)
The prime fallacies of the need for a "viable contiguous state" for the Palestinians also needs to be dealt with. 1st - Gaza and the West Bank will never be contiguous. A land bridge, tunnel, safe passage etc. will not solve the problem of 100+ km of Israel between them. 2nd - Even looking at just the West Bank contiguous does not require straight lines, and the boarder can and will loop around due to geography if not actual population locations. 3rd - The League of Nations, the UN, etc all called for a homeland for the Jews between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, so how can Israel's liberating this land from Jordanian occupation be ilegal or result in creating a brand new Nation and Nationality called Palestine?
10. Reasons for a Palestinian state [Post #1]
Mar   (12.14.10)
I assume you are saying the Likud under Netanyahu is the "extreme Left" along with practically every other party in the Knesset and that by "opposition" you mean Feiglin and National Union. If you meant just Kadima and Labor is "extreme Left," your comment makes little sense, because, for example, giving Palestinians Israeli citizenship would bolster those two parties. First let me dispose of an argument that you did not argue: The push towards a Palestinian state cannot be exclusively against religious Jews because a lot of non-religious Jews live in the settlements too. Your comment in #1 that the push towards a Palestinian state is to preserve the power structure is correct from this angle: Preserving the status quo of Israeli companies operating in the PA and Gaza is indeed a reason as investigative journalist David Bedein confirmed. BUT you are missing the elephant in the room and main reason for the push towards a Palestinian state: Israeli foreign policy since the Yom Kippur War has been controlled by the United States as pointed out by David Bedein. Israel has no real independent foreign policy. And through my research President Bush agreed to a Palestinian state due to Saudi prodding or threats delivered by Prince Bandar in August 2001. Saudis have this leverage over America due to petrol dollars and petrol. Shortly thereafter, I postulate Bush must have prodded Ariel Sharon to accept a Palestinian state. The fits the chronology that I am aware of, but feel free to correct. I cite profuse sources under the recent Meltzer piece.
11. Annex Area C, on the basis that it has Jewish majority
Avi ,   Geneva   (12.14.10)
And include this territory in the recent law that no territory may be relinquished without referendum.
12. Can't believe this was actually printed!
Raf ,   Athens   (12.14.10)
And even funnier that some of the respondents took it seriously. The only humane thing to do either on your own initiative or at the West's demand is to annex the whole West Bank (J&S, whatever you wanna call it) and give the Palestinians their eternal right to live on their land with Israeli citizenship. Then they may not view the illegal settlements as 'illegal'. The author of this article is missing something important......INTELLECT!
13. Good Laugh, is that a Purim-play ?
Rika Chaval   (12.14.10)
Look, except your most intimate friends, who do you think will buy into this theory of yours ?
14. two points: (a) the fence (b) referendum
eporue ,   europe   (12.14.10)
(ad a) you are aware, that the annexed area can NOT be separated from israel by a fence ? a fence between an annexed area and israel, between "one people", would not be accepted, by nobody in the world, never. (ad b) before annexing anything, imo, a referendum among the arab people in that area would be necessary, absolutely needed. and this watched/organized by the UN.
15. why data is important
meira ,   TA   (12.14.10)
In order to make intelligent conclusions you need accurate data, and you need to know if those presenting and evaluating the data are misinterpreting or manipulating it. One can argue for withdrawal from the West Bank for various reasons, but the demographic factor does not seem sustainable. Hysterical politicians overflowing with urgency are not helpful. We need to think carefully and critically.
16. MADNess
Avram   (12.14.10)
17. #14, have you seen Baghdad recently?
Jake ,   USA   (12.14.10)
There are security fences dividing the entire city. You speak nonsense.
18. #4 you need educate yourself!
Kurt ,   Austria   (12.14.10)
You are wrong, people (Arabs) in disputed territories are living under Arab (PA) control at the expence of Israeli, American and EU taxpairs. PA has all that a state attribute including ambassies all over the world. BTW nobody: neigher UN nor Oslo agreement didn't promise them a state.
19. How experts got it wrong
Charlotte Goller ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (12.14.10)
I would like to see the approximate numbers and some other details.
20. YES -
Arn. ,   Sweden.   (12.14.10)
-ALL JEWS N THE WORLD WILL ALSO COME HOME - EZEKIEL CHAPTER 39 verses - 25"Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: Now will I bring back the captives of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for My holy name 26after they have borne their shame and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against Me, when they dwelt safely in their land and none made them afraid. 27When I have brought them back from the people and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations, 28then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, who caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen. But I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there; 29neither will I hide My face any more from them, for I have poured out My Spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD." AND AS A CONSEQUENSE - Isaiah 54 "Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear! Break forth into singing and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child! For more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife," saith the LORD. 2Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations; spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes. 3For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left, and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited. 4"Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed; neither be thou confounded, for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more. 5For thy Maker is thine husband" the LORD of hosts is His name" and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; the God of the whole earth shall He be called. - THIS IS LESS THAN A DECADE AHEAD !!!. Arn.
21. Demographic hype intended to achieve sick leftist agenda.
Chaim ,   Israel   (12.14.10)
Those who perpetuate the demographic threat hype either know it is false or accept it on faith, without any empirical validity. The left, for sick reasons of it's own, wants Israel to leave Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria and trim our waist to a suicidal 8 miles. It uses the demographic threat to induce Israel to accept this abomination. As Dann notes, it is completely false and has been proven so in many highly credible studies.
22. Sometimes "leaving things as they are" is the best course
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (12.14.10)
The temptation to "do something" is understandable, but it often makes things worse. The Oslo Accords that resulted in bringing Arafat and his thugs from Tunisa to "lead the Palestinians" must rank as among the worst political decisions of the last century. Just about everyone agrees that program made things worse. The well-meaning rarely think things through. Take the issue of Palestinian refugees. The Pals insist they must all return to Israel, but that won't happen. But it's a fair guess than once a Palestinian state is declared (or rather exists), the lives of those in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan will turn tenuous. Where will they go? Or take Jerusalem. The well-meaning suggest it must be divided - despite the fact there's never been a single city serving as a capital of two states. But what will life be like in the city? It's virtually guaranteed that terrorism will radically increase, access to religious sites will be more difficult, and the place will prove unlivable for Jews. So yes, sometimes leaving things as they are until a viable solution emerges is often the best course. Obama is wrong. There is no "fierce moral urgency" to create a Palestinian state.
23. Head in the Sand
Ron ,   OC, USA   (12.15.10)
Israel is 20 to 25 percent Arab within greenlinn Israel and the Jews residing in the WB and Jerusalem. Too many Arabs: Housing should be built for Israeli Arabs in the WB, Jordan and Gaza.
24. NO, 20, Arn
John H ,   New Zealand   (12.15.10)
Your use of what God said is rendered illegitimate because 1) it is taken out of time and context; 2) you have quoted it in a language people spoke 500 years ago, this is the 21st century and no one, including God, speaks that way today; 3) your last sentence makes the fatal mistake everyone has made down through the centuries, it sets a date (of less than ten years).
25. Many here seem to support war over peace but is that wise?
Bloodyscot ,   Dallas, Texas   (12.15.10)
Israel has a military edge now but will it still have it 10 or 20yrs from now, also how long will US continue to veto UN if the pay it has to pay goes up, since China/Russia/India are growing fast, with S. America a wild card. If Hizbollah or Syria gets N. Korea nukes in a few years would that change the push for war?
26. To #20 Arn
John DeLancy ,   Alaska, USA   (12.15.10)
Thank you - this is, as prophecy is intended to be, a comfort. I find this very interesting ... But I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there ... this does seem to suggest (i.e. says unambiguously) that all of the children of Israel will be regathered to the Promised Land. The entire of the Isaiah 54 quote just fills me with joy. Ever since I, rather recently, found Ynet and had my interest in the children of Israel rekindled, my heart's cry has been for the Almighty to make (or reveal) more Jews. Many more. This is exactly what this prophecy says. And this is not through the natural course, but the LORD Himself making this happen, and providing _cities_ for these new Jews to inhabit. I can see why you titled your post as you did - it's cause to shout YES!
27. @7 Sarah: Yoram Ettinger is the name
Trumpeldor ,   eurabia   (12.15.10)
