1. those kind of people had'nt a cellphone
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.21.11)
and most certainly not even a phone when they were living in their Shtetl years ago . They still live there mentally , not in the 21 st century . When planning a wedding , it can be very usefull .
2. unclear article
roxanne ,   haifa   (01.21.11)
are these rabbis objecting to CELL PHONES or are they just banning them DURING STUDY? its a huge difference. the latter decision makes a lot of sense. the former one makes them sound like douchebags.
3. like saying don't use cell phone in library
Potash Katiftof ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (01.21.11)
The rabbi is basically saying that they can't use the cell phone in the study room, very similar to a talmudic library/study hall. While most people understand why you can't use a cell phone there, there are those who are getting married who are a bit too comfortable being the center of attention and don't mind talking about it with hundreds of people around. So they are banning it inside the yeshiva so that they MUST go outside or into a private room to take their call.
4. Re:#2, Roxanne
Moshe ,   Tel Aviv   (01.21.11)
Whenever you read an article about Yeshivot Rabbis, you can always assume they are being douchebags and you'll rarely be wrong.
5. Absolute power
Acupuncturist ,   Givat Olga   (01.21.11)
One more example of absolute power ruling absolutely!
6. Cellphones are annoying & rude !!
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (01.21.11)
You're eating dinner in a fine restaurant, the fellow at the next table receives a call, his phone rings, he answers the call, without bothering to go outside to do it Best part is that the connection is poor, so he sits there hollering into the phone, totally screwing up your dinner Or, you're in movies, phones jingle all around, you paid a higt price for the movie ticket and you can't hear the dialogue If you ask him to take his call outside, he's all fired up and want to punch you for having the nerve to want to enjoy the movie People are in class studhing, the phones ring, not much study work will get done, since everybody is on the phone Worst of all, you and your companion are enjoying an intimate moment, the phone rings, there goes the mood
7. Chabad allows Cell Phones
Moishe ,   Frederick, U.S.A.   (01.21.11)
As long as they are used kosherly. I see no wrong in restricting their use. The Rabbis in question, probably won't read this article or the comments here, since they probably ban or restrict Internet use too. I'm not a perfect individual either, but to call someone names, using vulgar or street slang descriptions, without knowing the individual(s) in question is wrong. It's doubly wrong when the violator is also a Jew. Just my $.02. You are certainly entitled to think what you want to think, but think before you speak.
8. The groom has a choice
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (01.22.11)
To get to know his bride on their wedding night or to talk on the phone with his buddies
9. 6 Ben Jabo.You are very funny!

Abe Froman ,   NY, NY   (01.23.11)
11. Abe 10 , it are also their dark ages rules
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.23.11)
for their dark ages living .
12. #7 - these Yeshivot are Misnagdim...
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.23.11)
...not Chassidim.... different kettle of fish. But they can always get married in Cyprus, like many other people do!
13. #10 + #11
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.23.11)
Let them do what every they want among themselves. Just don't let them butt into our lives.
14. Ha Rab ha GAon -Gadol A Dor
to Rabbi Levi &MsR ,   Il   (01.23.11)
Do you have a problem writing complete names? Your Hareidi sources dont sound quite knowledgable- and you stand for reformists? Esau people?
15. Dorothy , You are right
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.23.11)
But it's maybe our duty to criticise them . With their ideas they only produce ignorant and non contributing people . And that's the way they "butt in our lives" because it's done with our money .
16. #15 - that's what I care about.
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.24.11)
But their own problems? The spousal and child abuse, the inability to perform the simplist functions without running for rabbinical advice? It's their religion, practiced as they want, let them live with the consequences.
17. 5 absolute power
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (01.24.11)
How is the threat not to attend on the marriage of his student "absolute power"?
