2. what gaza and west bank share, is the common feeling of...
eporue ,   europe   (12.20.10)
being occupied by israel... but thats it. this is the only bond between them. they are different people, as the whole "muslim world" is. thats why they MUSTNT become one state of "palestine". for their own good, they have to be separate states.
3. he tries to dissuade him from "doing stupid things"?
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (12.20.10)
well good luck with that monumental task. it's sad when a guy like tirawi's modus operandus is stupidity.
4. Huh?
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.20.10)
" ... painting a picture of a desperate, disorganized, and demoralized Fatah in the Gaza Strip, versus a well-organized and ascendant Hamas." Didn't we just read a week or so ago that Hamas has lost a considerable amount of support in Gaza? We know for a fact that they cannot keep their own house in order -- the last several mortar and missile attacks have been claimed by some of the terrorist splinter groups in Gaza. Oh well. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Hamas seems to be learning that the hard way. And it will get much more painful for them if they remain unable to exert control over the rabble they "govern."
5. No Knowledge of Impending Coup-Counter Coup
Mark of Lewiston ,   Lewiston USA   (12.20.10)
It is interesting that Diskin apparently had no knowledge of the planned coup attempt that Fatah attempted in Gaza a few days later. This meeting must have been just before the US Congressional hearings on the coup's prospects and whether or not Hamas would be decapitated in Gaza. Apparently Sharon didn't share the information with Diskin and neither did Bush or Elliott Abrams or Cheney or even CIA. Of course, all this was detailed by Seymour Hersh in New Yorker and was laid out in detail before the coup attempt in those Congressional hearings - THREE DAYS IN ADVANCE of the coup attempt.
6. As usual, Israeli analysis better than that of US.
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (12.20.10)
Diskin did miss Hamas' coup in 2007, but compared to US intelligence and analysis, Israel was generally spot on. Israel's opposition to arming Fatah in Gaza (more than they already had) "for fear that the weapons and equipment would fall end up in Hamas' hands" proved prescient. In addition to weapons, Hamas captured a treasure trove of top secret security documents, secure communication equipment after Fatah's forces collapsed in the face of numerically smaller Hamas militants. Of course, despite recognizing that Fatah is weak, disorganized, corrupt, and lacking in support, for political reasons (and fear of something worse), Israel insists that Fatah and the PA are their "peace partners".

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.20.10)
Whom do you think alerted everyone to the imminent coup? Duh. And has it occurred to you that such a coup was not in Israel's best interests? The more fragmented the ersatz "Palestinians," the better for Israel. They grow more fragmented with each passing day. Works beautifully for Israel because the ersatz "Palestinians" cannot agree on the time of day, let alone anything substantive.
8. SUMMING IT UP
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (12.20.10)
Israel had no partner for peace then and has no partner for peace now. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!

11. Seems pretty accurate - in hindsight
William ,   Israel   (12.20.10)
For 2007, the Israelis were pretty sharp in predicting the future. I think Diskin's analysis was well-known and widely accepted - the only people who didn't accept it was Fatah and those that felt he needed to be propped (Israeli Leftists) up because of his moderate (i.e. moderate terrorism vs. crazy suicidal terrorism) position.
