1. polygamy
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (12.21.10)
In French, there is a sayng:"Un verre c est bon, deux verres, que de degats" (one glass [of alcohol] is good, two glasses, how much damage.).We could say the same for two wives. Poligamy was allowed, till a Rabbi noticed all the damage caused by more than one wife, prohibited poligamy.
2. leave them alone
Eli ,   toronto   (12.21.10)
Leave them alone. Who told us that THE WAY WE ARE RIGHT NOW IS ACTUALY A GOOD WAY? I am white western person it doesn’t shock me and if it was accepted in our society I would probably have more than one wife. Of course it might be abused but I would make it legal so it will be easier to control.
3. Ora, you are wrong
Israeli ,   Israel   (12.21.10)
The Romans imposed monogamy on Jews. The rabbis merely perpetuated it and eventually internalized it as "tradition." It's Hellenism, not Judaism!
4. You do, of course, realize ....
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.21.10)
... that two wives means two mothers-in-law. Contemplate that one for a while, see if it is what you REALLY, TRULY want.
5. Polygamy shouldnt be considered illegal
Judi ,   MI, USA   (12.21.10)
It is acceptable in Islam for a man to have four wives, and while it is no longer common and is slightly frowned upon, that doesn't mean it should be illegal. If there ate that many single woman over 30, then it isnt fair to them if no single man will marry them. Let them marry previously married men.
6. To Salma- try a polygamy
ASHER ,   T.A   (12.21.10)
Be part of your brothers and sisters. May be you will obtain a happiness
7. Many of Bedouin's problems traceable to ... polygamy
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (12.21.10)
The Israeli sector with the highest rate of population growth is the Bedouin - and that is the due to polygamous marriages with many offspring. That leads to pressure for land, seizure of state land, and the phenomenon of "unrecognized villages". The resulting large family size and limited economic opportunities leads to a high incidence of poverty in this sector. Moreover, as is the case with the Druze and some ultra-Orthodox communities, this is a more or less "closed" genetic population (with the added factor of first cousin marriage). So it's shouldn't surprise that there's a higher incidence of birth defects than is found in the general population.
8. "try" polygamy?
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (12.21.10)
and if you don't like it, then what?
9. thank G-D , I am not Bedouin and I'mless than 30 : )
Salma ,   Palestine   (12.21.10)
10. To: No. 2
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.21.10)
In the interest of fairness and equality, polygamy should be a two-way street, don't you agree? Women can have more than one husband, then, right -- following your "logic" (for lack of a better word).
11. how about a woman with many husbands ....
rachel ,   usa   (12.21.10)
That way the children would be well taken cared of .I think that makes more sense .....
12. how is polygamy any different than sleeping around without
(12.21.10)
marrying the women? this way, at least the man is taking responsibility.
13. What's not mentioned is...
Paul ,   USA   (12.21.10)
that it's very simple for a Mohammedan male, to divorce a wife(s). Say " I divorce you ", three times, and it's over for the muslimah.. The result of this idiotic sharia, is that there will be a lot of lonely, DIVORCED, Bedouin muslimahs wandering around the desert.. Sharia is not women friendly..
14. Polygamy....
Rashid ,   Chicago, IL   (12.21.10)
As usual all of you are quick to dismiss our glorious Arab culture and ways. After all, even many Yemenite Jews still practice polygamy. Nothing wrong with having many wives. After all, in our Islamic culture, it is the duty of the woman to serve a man. Women are to be covered from head to toe, and be in the kitchen where they belong. And if she fails, we can always divorce her and replace her with another woman. All it takes is to say 3 times "You are divorced." It is your peculiar Western ways of "ostensible" equality for women that has created so many problems for you.
15. Ora is right!!!!
yitz ,   USA   (12.21.10)
It was banned by rabbis not the romans. Rabinu Gershon banned it because he was married to two wives and saw the damage (jeaulosy). In fact his ban is only by the Ashkinazic and (most) Sefardim. There are certain communitites that where not part of that prohibition such as yeminte jews.
16. Maybe they should marry Jewish men?
Scott ,   USA   (12.21.10)
And not be treated like mules. (Or is it only Arab men who can date Jewish women?)
17. #14 - Rashid....Funny how you mention your glorious..
Paul ,   USA   (12.21.10)
Arab culture, but you forgot to mention a few things about sharia, like burying women up to their necks and stoning them, for the crime of being raped. That doesn't sound to glorious to me... And I notice you write from Chicago - isn't that in a western country ? Why are you in Chicago, instead of some Islamic hellhole, where sharia is the law of the land ?
18. Ora AND Yitz simplistic and wrong!
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (12.21.10)
R. Gershom ben Yehudah merely ratified in the 12th century what Theodosius (347-395 C.E. had imposed upon Roman--Christian--citizens; which, since 212 C.E., included Jews. Jews of Europe lived monogamously from the 4th century C.E.--because of the Roman imposition. That is also why it regulated only European Jews. It should have set off alarm bells that polygyny (not polygamy) was halakhah of Mosheh from Har Sinai for almost 3 millennia until a 12th century C.E. Ashkenazi rabbi presumed cave to Christian practice and overturn Halakhah of Mosheh from Har Sinai. Moreover, polygyny remained halakhah outside of the "superior ruling" Ashkenazim until today. Now, Sepharadim, Mizrakhim and Teimanim are having it imposed upon them by the Ashkenazim and Israeli law. Polygyny was halakhah of Mosheh from Har Sinai until the 12th century C.E.--and Torah doesn't change. Monogamy is a Hellenist Roman Christian imposition. Paqid Yirmeyahu Paqid 16, The Netzarim, Ra'anana, Israel Israeli Torah-reverer & Orthodox Jew: Teimani, Baladi, Dor Dai Advocate for Logic as Hermeneutic Halakhic Authority Welcoming all who choose to keep Torah (When questions to me go unanswered, ynet has refused to post it. 19. Dear Paul (#17)
Rashid ,   Chicago, IL   (12.21.10)
So you have heard of women being stoned in Arab countries? How about the way women are treated in the West? Why is it that women are not paid equally for doing the same job? Women in the US only received the right to vote quite recently. How about violence against women? Have you looked at the crime statistics in your city/state/the US? Check this out...... 1. Every nine seconds a woman is beaten in the United States. Source: American Institute on Domestic Violence 2001 (www.aidv-usa.com/Statistics.htm) 2. Women ages 20-34 endure the highest rates of domestic violence. Source: American Institute on Domestic Violence 2001 (www.aidv-usa.com/Statistics.htm) 3. On average, more than three women a day are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in the United States. Source: Family Violence Prevention Fund (http://endabuse.org/resources/facts) 4.One out of every six American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime. Source: Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (www.rainn.org) And you criticize Arab countries??? Even orthodox Judaism does not view women equally. After all, does it not include in the prayers for men, "Baruch shey lo asani lisha?" (Thank the Lord for not making me a woman)? And women are required to say, "Baruch shey asani kfi ratzono?" (Bless the Lord for creating me as per his will)? At least in our glorious culture, women are free. Free to be in the kitchen, raise children and serve their husbands. We would like to bring the light of our culture to the West.
20. 18 - that sure is some wild obsession you have there
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (12.21.10)
an article about bedouin women and polygamous marriages within their unique culture and you can turn THAT into a launching pad for your anti-christian polemics. i have to hand it to you - that's some bitter and angry disorder that can see a christian behind every problem in the world. hope your hate keeps you warm at night.
21. I can't understand the problem...
Amir ,   Netanya, Israel   (12.21.10)
Even though I'm a secular and I don't recommend polygamy, I can't understand why should we, as a public, see it negative for everybody. Likewise, I don't think that we, as a state, should use such a violent solution such as get it out of the law...
22. Freedom for all
B ,   Washington, USA   (12.22.10)
Why do we persecute people who are already in pain. Leave them alone! Let them decide!
23. #19
Birdi ,   Israel   (12.22.10)
"We would like to bring the light of our culture to the West" PLEASE dont, we dont respect your culture & we definately DONT want your culture. Its quite enough that your people are swarming all over the West without intergrating at all. Thanks, but no thanks.
24. # 16
Birdi ,   Israel   (12.22.10)
If an Arab or Druize female would date a Jewish man, her father, uncles & brothers would kill her.
25. # 14
Birdi ,   Israel   (12.22.10)
Some nerve you have to come to this forum & boast about your "glorious Arab culture" You can shove it where the sun dont shine, real fast.
26. # 11
Birdi ,   Israel   (12.22.10)
One husband is quite enough. No need for more !!
27. #19 your delusional about women's right in the west
rachel ,   usa   (12.22.10)
at least there are statistics in the muslim world its to each his own and terrror rules .Everyone is afraid of each other because your all a bunch of cowards who can't stand up to make laws .
28. #19 you need virgins because you are so insecure about your
rachel ,   usa   (12.22.10)
masculinity .
29. I guess Bedouins can't add...
dfern ,   San Diego, USA   (12.22.10)
A woman who is in her third decade would be between ages of 21 and 30. Women who are over 30 would be in their fourth decade (or greater).......
30. Dear Rashid ( #19 ), You forgot a few things...
Paul ,   USA   (12.22.10)
Items 1 through 4, are crimes in the U.S. - not so in Islam, where women are looked upon as property ( as you so aptly demonstrated, in your earlier comment ). Your " moral equivalency " argument against orthodox Judaism, does not hold water. You sidestep the issue.. You also write " At least in our glorious culture, women are free ". Sure, free to serve you - and they will suffer the consequences, if they don't. That's not freedom, that's called slavery. In case you haven't realized it yet, slavery was abolished in the US. And yes, I will criticize Arab countries that use barbaric sharia, as the law of the land, because I believe in human rights for all. Sharia is a savage throwback to the 7th century - tell me, what the hell has Islam contributed to the world, in science, art, etc ? Virtually NOTHING ! So, stop the taqiyah, and keep the " light(?) ", of Islam, far from me. This kuffir is very much aware of what you, and your coreligionists, are up to...
