1. So where's the actual news in this story?
Menachem ,   Gush Etzion, Israel   (12.31.10)
They want what they want, but aren't willing to do what they need to in order to get it, namely provide a legitimate, legal plan. Can you imagine an entire country of whiners like this?
2. Israel, grow up!
Mark ,   KS, Israel   (12.31.10)
The excuses being made are pathetic and NOW Israel is behaving like the old apartheid regime of South Africa, denying basic amenities to people When will the administrative and government morons in Israel learn that their purile behaviour and narrow minded attitude creates only ill-will?? I am embarrassed by this immature and pathetic administration. Netenyahu, gow a set of balls and start being a leader!!!
3. @1
IZL   (12.31.10)
Seldomly are the articles posted in newspapers worthy of the brand "news". If you look at Ynet, you are stuck with journalists with agendas and opinions. You get the right and the left, but sadly, the objective truth gets lost between the two. For example, is a village of 160 people a village, or a settlement? How long has this "village" been in existence? Nowhere near enough information is tied to this "story", the meat is missing. However, two themes do come out of this story, poor Arabs, no electricity/water, under Israeli jurisdiction, therefore it leads any logical reader who does not dig deeper into this story to conclude that Israel is abusive towards Arabs under its "dominion". Like I said, political drivel from the right or left is not news, it is convienent selections of portions of a greater reality used for impression and twisting.
4. Re#1 - YES
Moshe ,   Tel Aviv   (12.31.10)
It's called Israel. That's what makes it democratic - people are allowed to whine when they think they are being mistreated and the media is allowed to report it. Exactly as it should be.
5. and they still look back with nostaligia
zionist forever   (12.31.10)
All we hear about is how life was so wonderful in the wonderful villages their grandparents lived in before 1948 which they so badly want a right of return to. These villages they have such nostalgia for didn't have electricity and running water. Their ancestors had to do things the old fashioned like the arabs today are doing and complaining about. They want Israel to end this occupation so bad and want a state of their own so why should Israeli taxpayers finance the modernisation of villages belonging to people who want to see Israel destroyed. We have more important domestic issues to sped our money on so let them either pay for it and undertake the work themselves or moan about it and live like their ancestors did in those idealic villages they so badly want a right to return to.
6. Israel grow up
rob ,   toronto, canada   (12.31.10)
first of all, who cares, let all the arabs of that stolen town get out of town and back to arabia. if you, mark, are so concerned about arabs, i would guess that jews to you don't count and your understanding of apartheid is null and void, give them candles and all is okay. think you would get out of that arab village alive?
7. Jub al-Dib
Birdi ,   Israel   (12.31.10)
The PA donated 3 generators to this village which remain off most of the time beacuse the residents cannot afford petrol to fuel them. If & when this village gets electricty & water, its most likely the residents wont be able to afford to pay their (electricity & water) bills.
8. They want what they want,
jerry   (12.31.10)
They want what they want but paying they do not want to
9. 2 - Mark, KS Israel
Moragh   (12.31.10)
If it bothers you may I suggest you set up the PROFESSIONAL plan, pay for it and give to the arabs as a GOODWILL GESTURE. They will ove you for it Mark ------- and then kill you!
10. Wait till they get the first bills from the
jason white ,   afula,israel   (12.31.10)
electric company and for the water. Then they will really protest and not pay. Is there a law that says Israel must supply the palis with water and electricity and to take in "refugees" by the tens of thousands?
11. Israel wants them out
Joseph   (12.31.10)
Israel has full administrative authority over this area so it is responsible for them. The reason Israel won't allow them to have electricity and running water is because Israel wants them off the land. Israel denies the village water and electricity so that they will leave. Then the nearby Jewish settlers can come in and takeover their lands. It is pure ethnic cleansing. Luckily the villagers are strong and steadfast and for 22 years have held onto their lands despite Israel's efforts to get rid of them.
12. Why can't they recycle a plan from another village?
Sean Greene ,   Pasadena, USA   (12.31.10)
How hard could it be to draw up a simple plan? Even the PLO could pay someone to draw it up if not them then Israel. This is why the world thinks we are racist. it needs to be fixed.
13. Extension Cord
Dan ,   Titusville, FL   (12.31.10)
I am sure Mahmoud Abbas can run an extension cord with power over to these people. They have the gall to beg for help while their brethren build rockets to kill Jews.
14. It only takes money, nothing in life is free
You pay you ,   play   (12.31.10)
sounds like they want free free free. That don't fly anywhere I know of.
15. 11 maybe right once you learn what the Standards are
bloodyscot ,   Dallas, Texas   (12.31.10)
The other question is do all Jewish villages in W. Bank adhere to its standards? or are they given green light anyway. The Outposts are illegal but many are hooked up.
16. As much as I feel for this people I cannot help, but
leo ,   usa   (12.31.10)
ask these questions - if you are so desperate why couldn't you in 22 years roll up your sleeves and help yourselves, juts like Jews do when they build and maintain their villages? And if you have no money to fuel the generators what makes you think that you will have money to pay for grid electricity?
17. Sean Greene @ 12, As far as good old World is concerned you
leo ,   usa   (12.31.10)
are only good when you are dead. So, stop worrying and keep enjoying your life if only for spite.
18. #2 - Get over yourself Mark. Israel is correct!
William ,   Israel   (12.31.10)
You're such a liberal retard to immediately revert to the "apartheid" accusation when you hear something you dislike. Boo hoo. In a world of laws, you cannot choose which you want to follow and which you do not. Oh wait...you're a liberal retard, so you do think that. First, these Arab residents are NOT Israeli citizens...like it or not. They demand to be part of future Abbas-State and therefore not a problem of Israel. If you would allow us to annex it without crying foul, we could provide for them as citizens....oh wait, I guess that would be racist too, huh? Just as a building needs proper permits, an electrical grid needs proper plans. Go see the problems in South America, Thailand, and India where electric lines are tapped by locals and wires are everywhere. How many die due to shock? fires? Would you hold Israel responsible if they connected such a faulty village plan to their grid and a house burns down? You betcha! So until you can move past your own racist hatred, please do not comment on the course of legality.
19. #7 - very good point!
William ,   Israel   (12.31.10)
First, they are simply jealous because they want what the Jews have. Pretty much the same impetus that caused many to flee in 1948 with hopes of returning in days to claim Jewish wealth after Arab armies have killed them all. Second, once this village is connected to Israel's national system (analogous to connecting Toronto to the US electricity grid), it can be assumed they would simply demand it for free. And why not, their brothers in Israeli Arab villages do pretty much the same thing, on average.
20. #11 - feeling libelous today, Joseph?
William ,   Israel   (12.31.10)
Nevermind that under the Ottomans and the Jordanians...up to 1967...none of the villages in the West Bank had electricity and running water except for locales like Ramallah. Along comes Israel who puts in a decent road network, schools, electricity, and water system for most of the West Bank and now we're "racists wanting ethnic cleansing" because a village of 160, which demands to be part of a "Palestinian" State, doesn't warrant a $7 million investment by Israel which will yield zero return on investment? For 22 years, the villages demanded water and electricity. They received a list of obligations they need to do. They did nothing. They waited and asked again. It's called a cycle of Arab stupidity, nothing commendable as you describe it. Let them do what's required and be part of the process....not another welfare recipient demand free stuff.
21. if the village is cooperative, pays taxes, should be helped
dante ,   uk   (12.31.10)
22. #16 - very true..where is the "Arab" creativity here?
William ,   Israel   (12.31.10)
1001 ways to bomb civilians but no one comes up with an alternative idea to bring water and electricity to a village for 22 years (actually much longer). A creative solution would be to be self-sufficient. Become the first "green" Pally village on the map. Throw up windmills and solar panels. Drop a few wells (PA already has 200 permits not using) - and get Intl recognition which would bring investment. A town in the US Midwest did this after it was wiped out by a tornado. This is really just a case of "Palestinians" seeing Israel as their perpetual sugar-daddy, while Leftists try to dig in with accusations of racism to get the wallet to stay open.
23. #11 Quite right, Joseph. Israel wants them out.
Ben Alofs ,   Bangor   (01.01.11)
This is the simple reason why the inhabitants of Jub al-Dib in the Bethlehem area still have no electricity pr running water. This is Area C, so Israel carries responsibility for providing basic services like water and electricity. The grid powering 3 Israeli colonies is only 350 meters away, so the continued footdragging by Israel is blatant obstruction. Israel even refused a donor-funded program to provide the residents with solar-powered lights! It is therefore not an issue of the inhabitants trying to find innovative ways to get electricity or running water. Israel will not allow it. This is Palestine under military occupation, where Israel is trying to drive out the inhabitants of certain villages, because their land is being coveted by Israel's illegal colonies! Indeed, this is the kind of thing, that people like William of Israel are silent about.
24. Such cowards....TATA
Edithann ,   USA   (01.01.11)
25. Welcome to an Independent Palestine
John DeLancy ,   Alaska, USA   (01.01.11)
If you read my posts, you know I'm soft-hearted. I don't like to see people suffer, especially children, like the ones who live in this Palestinian village located in the West Bank. (n.b.: I'm using the words these people refer to, not calling their part of Palestine Shomron or Judea - they live in the West Bank) Alas, we must now look at the facts: 1. These are people who have dedicated their lives to the eradication of Israel, and refuse to recognize the right of a Jewish Israel to exist. 2. These people have their wish. They have no Jewish Israel interfering with their lives. 3. The same PA that also wants Israel gone has given them generators, paid for by the largess of their contributors, including the anti-Israel temporary occupant of the White House. 4. For some reason that same PA "forgot" to give them petrol to run their free generators. 5 and last: Jub al-Dib appears "stuck in the Middle Ages." Given that Palestine intends to be an Islamic state, and that Islam is perfectly fine with its adherents living in the 7th Century, this too is the realization of their wish. My summation: I hope they enjoy it - the asked for it - and I hope their children can escape to Israel or another non-Islamic state. (n.b. this is my FOURTH try at this post. please either post it or tell me WHY YOU WON'T What is wrong with this post???)
26. End the occupation!
Ari   (01.01.11)
Time for Israel to end the occupation of the West Bank, dismantle the illegal settlements and send the settlers back to Israel. Let Palestinians have their state, be free in Palestine and take care of their electricity. Peace can come only when the occupation ends, so settlers must come home to Israel.
27. Where are all the NGOs?
Benji ,   Paris, France   (01.01.11)
This little village needs infrastructure. There are tons of NGO workers in Israel and the west bank. Do you think these fake humanitarians would do something about it? Instead they rather stire more conflict. They rather fight Israel along palestinians hooligans rather than helping palestinians with their real issues. The village needs a plan ... a plan for god sake!!! Stop being trouble makers and start doing what you are meant to be doing as NGO reps!
28. #21 - village is not a cooperative and pays taxes to PA
William ,   Israel   (01.01.11)
They are simply under Israel's administrative control during the tiered-plan of autonomy as drawn up with the Oslo Accords. Had Arafat not broken the agreements (many times) this part (Area C) would eventually join PA State-autonomy, but never pay taxes or anything to the Jewish State during the time.
