my opinion is that, if those ethiopians are xtians and jews by birth- the net conclusion is they are not within orthodox judaism.....as such their conversion by the idf rabbis is NOT VALID ! If they do not pray to Jesus, and are committed to Torah, we need more people in the land who do it. FYI,Not everybody makes a shin on the hand when wrapping tefilin. Sephardim & Eidot HaMizrach make something that looks like railraod tracks & Chabad makes a shin on the bicep,a dalet on the hand & a yood on the middle finger. There are several other variations as well. Whether theese people are Jews are not that is up to the rabbanim to rule on.

Even though many of them are not Halakhik jews, Russian Jews were allowed in Israel without any restrictions. I don't see why it should be different for Ethiopian Jews. Even if some people pretend to be Jewish to move to Israel, penalizing the others is just unfair. I'd chose to welcome all of them (even the "fake'' Falash Muras) rather than penalizing all of them for few abuses.
