31. #14 Al Gore. I Mean Maurice
Edwin   (01.03.11)
I will let you into a little secret: everything tends towards the average. For example, a well-fed, short man will tend to have a son taller than he is. In the same way, the earth’s temperatures will tend towards average. Since we are now experiencing temperatures well below average for the earth, it is not unexpected they should be rising towards average. In fact they have been steadily rising since the last ice age. Hey, I have worked in the Canadian and Greenland high arctic and have seen the evidence of temperate forests having grown there in the not too distant past. That the world’s climate is not static is indisputable. But, what people like #4 object to are the Al Gores that proffer their personal experiences as anecdotal evidence of a climate shift caused by human activity
32. Palestinian numbers #2
Meir ,   Canada   (01.03.11)
Firstly, #2 the swapping of Israeli Arab towns bext to the Green Line is what Lieberman proposes and has been deemed racsist by the left in Israel and Israeli arabs who would be affected by exchanging Israeli for Pal citiszenship. They of course prefer to whine about about being second class citizens while refusing to join Palestine. As far as the actual number of West Bank Arabs just go to the major West Bank town websites and add up their own self declared population figures. Most West Bank Arabs are urban dwellers. You can then add or double that total to get an approximate total for the rest of the West Bank. It is not even 1.5 million.

Yoad   (01.03.11)
There is a huge difference between infant mortality and general mortality. Since the Arab population is much younger, overall mortality in the Arab sector is roughly 7000 a year, compared to 33,000 Jewish mortalities.
34. #29 Chaim
Marcella   (01.03.11)
I always find that your comments make a lot of sense. I agree with your repeated suggestion of financial assistance for Arabs who wish to emigrate. This idea cannot be emphasized enough times. Indeed, the main issue is not to win arguments but to actually do something significant to strengthen the Jewish majority. The fact that Mr. Ettinger's figures are right and those of the left wrong means little without a strong push for annexation now, before the PA declares independence. After that the pressure on Israel to disengage will be huge.
35. To: No. 33
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.03.11)
You are babbling incoherently. Israel has the eighth-highest life expectancy in the world. Way ahead of most Western countries! That said, Arabs in Israel are twice as likely to die of heart failure, cancer, stroke and diabetes than are Jews. Might have something to do with smoking -- three times as many Arabs in Israel smoke as do Jews. By the way, check your math. 7,000 deaths per year in a population of slightly over 1.5 million is way higher than 33,000 deaths per year in a population of over 5 million.
36. Just a few facts
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.03.11)
Arnon Sofer predicted in 1987 that we would be a minority population in the year 2000. It is now 2011 and our majority is not decreasing, it is increasing.
37. The demographic elephant in the room
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (01.03.11)
The Haredim. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.03.11)
Actually, global warming produces ice ages. Glacial melt -- fresh water -- raises the level of the oceans and, as a result, moderating salt-water currents such as the Gulf Stream cannot go as far north as they normally would.

LT COL HOWARD ,   WASHINGTON DC USA   (01.04.11)
This is a timely warning: claimed Palestinian refugees now number more than 11 million. Civilian casualties in Gaza are far less than original reports. The 600 killed in Jenin turned out to be 58. Unfortunately, statistics, estimates, projections, etc. are utilized solely in the political interests of the PA.
40. Etinger you do not have to be demography expert to know
Dave   (01.04.11)
your analysis is BS, tainted and meaningless. Stop with your agenda, time for you to grow up.
41. number 7
anon ,   Johannesburg   (01.04.11)
one state... maybe, however, it will end in civil war... i predict over 100 thousand dead Palestinians and the rest will cross the border to Jordan for safety... your future on this land is not looking bright if a takeover is in the plans. another factor you don't seem realise is that Israel is a Jewish state, by which could include a 'say' (the franchise) to every Jew around the diaspora. my opinion is that, the vote will be given to the community at large; from the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, France, South Africa, South America etc. As Jews they should have a say as to how the only Jewish homeland should be managed.
42. to Mohammed
Hershel ,   Canada   (01.04.11)
Thanks for your well wishes - I take it you're a friend concerned with the survival of Israel?
43. "Palestinian" Is 0! Because they don't exist!
Palestiniansareamyth ,   USA   (01.04.11)
44. Missing the Point. We are a bannana republic
Adam ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (01.04.11)
We could come up with a million solutions and logical reasons why not to withdraw but the world powers including the USA have decided that we have to.
45. Argue with the facts ma'am. Great article Ettinger!
Jack ,   Haifa Israel   (01.04.11)
I am another recent Jewish returnee to our 4000 year old homeland. Bezrat Hashem I too will have a busload of kids, and with God's help, the finances to support it. Will the domographers take into account too? lol. 8 miles wide is suicide. next king of jordan? A "Palestinian."
46. #34 Marcella. What "Palestinians" can teach Israel.
Chaim ,   Israel   (01.04.11)
#34 Marcella. You are correct that Israel will face enormous international pressure to leave our heartland if "Palestinians" declare statehood later this year. However, Israel will also face enormous pressure if they don't declare statehood. Our enemies will attempt to position us as refusing "Palestinians" their right to declare statehood. The bottom line is that Israel will face enormous pressure no matter what "Palestinians" do or don't do. Most of it is our own fault. Had Israel never buckled to pressure, in the first place, we would face little pressure. We are under great pressure because we have a history of backing down. That is the problem. Case in point. "Palestinians" are infinitely weaker than Israel. Yet they face no real pressure to do anything. They never make any concessions and nobody expects them to make any concessions. That is the only lesson Israel can learn from them.
47. 45#, Jack, if only one million more olim came like you and I
Judah ,   Golan Heights,ISRAEL   (01.04.11)
48. Demographics
Mark ,   USA   (01.04.11)
While I agree with Mr. Ettinger that the Palestinians numbers are most likely suspect, the status quo of doing nothing, is not sustainable. I believe that just like the Palestinians use numbers of people living overseas, Israel too must offer citizenship to Jews wherever they reside, as long as they do some kind of national service, pay a VAT, etc. I am sure that at least another 1-2 million Jews would sign on for this type of citizenship, which would largely make this demographic problem moot.
