How does this pertain to us, to Israel?
One reads about this type of repression and thought control, and a typical knee jerk reaction is "Glad I don't live there". But, are we moving in that direction? How do we prevent Israel from becoming a theocratic, totalitarian society? For sure, the seeds are ever-present, the followers ever-vocal. How do we maintain common sense?
A liberal, open and democratic society fosters diversity, dissension and creativity. Repression fears the same values. Today's favorite, is tomorrows enemy. When a society engages and supports diversity, all walks of life are invested, and not one version of human existence. The secular lives alongside the religious. Both are encouraged to be what and whom they believe. It is past time, that the left and right understand that a liberal society allows BOTH to live, and do so freely.
