1. The army morality rating.
Philip ,   Afula, Israel   (01.11.11)
Mr Yoaz Hendel, you state that the Israeli army is the most moral army in the world, what are your sources.Would you or could you please show us the list that rates the worlds armies according to their morality?
2. Pious reactionary!
Pinhas Bayit ,   Bat Yam   (01.11.11)
I'm no 'lefty' but I know a red-neck reactionary when I see one and when it spouts ideals as an excuse for immorality and it skirts the truth because it is selective in its hearing, I can only feel sorry for it. I wouldn't mind the bashing of the 'radical left' if there was one to shout about. But honestly there isn't. What we have is a 3 monkies attitude - hearing speaking and seeing no evil - unless of course there's a target to paint as evil. The saddest part of all this is that the people who really count, the voters, couldn't care less.
3. Well known truth don't make it easier
Mark ,   Jerusalem   (01.11.11)
Normally people understand that. But beside the new way of war that presented in this article IDF loosing every battle in the media war. That's where we need more wins, even more than on battlefield.
4. MOST MORAL ARMY-KOL HAKAVOD

brain dead?
6. Yoaz Hendel is absolutely right!!
Israeli 2   (01.11.11)
I concur with everything Yoaz wrote. All other talkbackers who oppse this writing are sicko lefties despite their denials.

Official Hamas numbers: only 10% of people killed in Cast Lead by IDF were non-combatants. Official US Army numbers (revealed by Wikileaks): 60% of people killed in Iraq by Americans were non-combatants. Real numbers are far higher. September 4, 2009: American forces attack a tanker they think was hijacked. 90 civilians murdered. April 12, 1999: NATO attacks a civilian bridge in Serbia on Easter knowing it was not a military target. 14 civilians murdered. May 1, 1999: NATO attacks a civilian bridge in Kosovo knowing it was not a military target. 39 civilians murdered. How much more evidence do you need?

Pinhas Bayit ,   Bat Yam   (01.12.11)
Please provide the Hamas source for this - a website link, a newspaper quote etc etc. This figure flies in the face of every other statistic for Cast Lead. Thank you.
10. What to do with the morality index.
shrinkDave ,   Miami   (01.12.11)
After you extract your morality index from where the sun don't shine, please rate Iran, Iraq, Syria, Hezbollah, Hamas and friends for ethicality and morality. Who has the best genocidal index? How is their moral treatment of their own? Are Katyushas moral when they land on children's heads? Intentionally?
11. Thank you, Yoaz Hendel
Marcella   (01.12.11)
We should also denounce the real agenda behind this anti-IDF campaign. It is to demoralize and neuter the armed forces so as to render Israel easier to defeat and destroy. A good number of IDF casualties in Cast Lead and in subsequent confrontations with terrorists have occurred due to excessive restraint and care not to injure civilians among the enemy. An Israeli blogger wrote: Fighting in close areas and sending soldiers against lone terrorists instead of bombing their headquarters endangers our troops unnecessarily and fails to produce appropriate results. (Samson Blinded News)

Operation Cast Lead has been all over the internet, especially Jewish blogs. What #7 said about Hamas is correct - I've seen it also. Hamas lied to Goldstone, but Jewish blogs have been itemizing the names of the dead and so Hamas came forward to admit it. In terms of being the most moral army, I believe a British colonel testified about that a quite a few months back both at the UN and in Israel as well. Somewhat telling that you haven't noticed.
13. it is about war not army
SALIJerusalem   (01.12.11)
any war must have an aim more than to kill people and servive // look to hitler war /till now it is not about the army but about the aim of that war // the question is what it was the aim of the last three wars of israil and the more important what it will be the aim of the wars in future //is it to keep israil the jewish state to eliminate the halfe of its sitizens to unknown earth or life or what it will be i think it will be to kill others and the cause is to servive // it is the evil of the wars .. and i think it will be reverse when any change of power is not under israil feet
14. More cases to compare
David M.   (01.12.11)
#7 provided some good examples to compare the Israeli army with other armies. I would suggest to #1 to look at the Russian response to the insurgency in Chechnya. What is the percentage of civilians versus combatants killed in Grozny? Another good example is Sri Lanka's defeat of Tamil Tigers last year. How many Tamil civilians became collateral damage during the fighting? I am sure Mexico and some other countries could be added as examples. In all these instances regardless of the justified responses, the Israeli army would come ahead in protecting non-combatants.

In the time I have, I haven't been able to find the Hamas sources that were present immediately after "Cast Lead". If you read Arabic, I suggest you look at the Hamas websites to see the biographies of the dead people. As #12 said, you should look up Colonel Richard Kemp.
16. Great article
Sidney ,   USA   (01.12.11)
It is time for more articles like this to appear in Israeli media. Has anyone ever seen an article in Haaretz that approved of anything in Israel?
17. #15, Haaretz quoted the article in Al-Hayat
Danny   (01.12.11)
The hamas spokesperson stated between 600-700 militants had been killed. They previously claimed it was 49. The number identified as dead was 1,166. Even using the low end of Hamas's numbers that is 50% militant. Throw in the 160 odd from different "militant" organisations and that is 850 out of 1,166. The reason Pinhas hasn't heard of this is because the english speaking press decided not to bother checking Hamas lies, rather simply regurgitated them whole for him to swallow whole.
18. worrying about morality gets soldiers killed & looses wars
zionist forever   (01.12.11)
Is the IDF there to compete with our enemies on who is the most moral or who is going to win the war with minimum casualties? Should we ask our people to wear a badge saying most moral soldiers in the world or a badge that says best soldiers in the world who win wars? In 1973 despite the fact all the intelligence agencies were telling Golda war was inevitable she refused to agree to their demand to pre empt because she didn't want the world to consider the aggressor. She wanted us to be seen as victims of an arab war so we will let them fire the first shot. The result was it cost alot of Israeli lives and we almost lost. In 1981 Peres was planning to go public about Begins plan to destroy Saddam Hussains nuclear reactor because he was worried about Israel getting bad press and upsetting the French who were building it. For the leftist image was more important than the prospect of Saddam Hussain getting nukes. In 2006 Olmert wouldn't let the IDF fight to win he was obsessed with only using proportional force. When the soldiers boarded the Mavi Mara armed with paintball guns it was Because Barak didn't want the world to see images of Israeli soldiers boarding the ship in riot gear. Worrying about morality and image gets our people killed and can loose us the war and if the far left were running the country they would destroy it because of their obsession with image and fair play
19. It's a tactic
BH ,   Iowa   (01.12.11)
Hold Israel to an arbitrary view of perfection in order to delegitimize it for not acheiving those standards - which no other country is held to. The enemy targets civilians because they are cowardly and uncommitted. They will kill for their cause but they won't die for it. They refuse to look their enemy in the eye and fight toe to toe. They will be defeated. They always get defeated in that manner. They specifically target unarmed, untrained, unorganized civilians. They are cowards. They hide behind their own civilians knowing they'll be safe from retribution because they are cowards. When has anyone heard a leftist condemn the enemy for rocket attacks targeting civilians, for using human shields, for the lynchings? Never. This means their principles are meaningless. They are a lie. Simply a tactic to delegitimize and bring down Israel from within. If leftist principles were truly principles they would be applied to the enemies as well as Israel. They are not.
20. Resounding victory is I.D.F.'s moral imperative.
Chaim ,   Israel   (01.12.11)
I am not proud to hear the I.D.F. described as the "most moral army in the world". I see nothing virtuous about endangering our I.D.F. soldiers (many barely old enough to shave) to protect hostile civilians. Imagine if the WW II Allies were so "moral". They would never have reduced Berlin, and many other German and Japanese cities, to rubble. The Nazis would have won the war. Jews would all be lampshades and all survivors would speak German. Some morality! Resounding victory is the I.D.F.'s moral imperative. Our "Palestinian" enemies would love to finish Hitler's work. Just watch PA TV any day.
21. #18 & morality

Prayer for Israeli complete victory go up from around the world. Now we're seeing Zech. 12:3 unfold. No lover of Israel should lose heart and become discouraged.
23. "the most moral army"
sjoerd van der velde ,   hoorn-the netherland   (01.12.11)
the most moral army. every country can say this about its army and perhaps can explain it with legal and convincing evidence. the most moral person. everybody can say so of herself/himself. mazzeltov.
24. Radical Peace

Give the palestinians are demilitirized state in the areas of the pre1967 borders let the holy basin be internationalized secure the jordan river valley area denuclearize iran and give the jews and noachide jews the vote to compensate the arab revolts against jewish escape from 1882.
25. IDF the more moral than any other army in history
Ronit   (01.17.11)
Great article. Colonel Kemp, the British commander of the allies forces in Bosnia, has said that never in history there was an army more moral than the IDF. And that often securing enemy's civilians comfort and lives occurs on the expense of Jewish soldiers life.
