1. What a bunch of bull!!
Abu ,   Brooklyn, NY   (01.12.11)
What they are REALLY trying to say is that they are afraid that Israel is finally realizing the true agenda of the EU and the left.
2. inquiries are not suppression
Yaakov ,   USA   (01.12.11)
INquiring where activist groups get their funding is in the interest of transparency, which is a FEATURE OF democracy. Why are these Euros such idiots to think that transparency is a threat to democracy? What are they hiding?
3. Talk about Chutzpah!
Z Lando ,   Tekoa, Israel   (01.12.11)
"Everything is transparent" = "except what we don't want anyone to know" "Democracy" = "we want to be able, with money, to make Israel do things it's government doesn't want to do..." "Trust the supreme court" = "In the past the high court has always helped us, that is why we give huge amounts of money to groups connected to it"
4. Worry about your economies
Rachel ,   US   (01.12.11)
They're scared their role with the leftist NGOs will come to light. That's all. If I were them I would concern myself with my crashing economy.
5. A centre right country fed up with leftist domination.
Chaim ,   Israel   (01.12.11)
Israel is a centre right country fed up with undemocratic leftist domination. Israel is fed up with electing right wing governments only to see the goverments betray their principles and electorate due to pressures from the leftist media, courts and mostly foreign funded NGOs. In short, Israelis want their country back. It is perfectly reasonable to require leftist NGOs to disclose their funding sources and be held liable for their often despicable actions.
6. Livni/Barak/Leftists CIRCUMVENTING the democratically electe
Yaawqove ,   Israel   (01.12.11)
elected rightest majority of 60% of Jewish vote! THAT is danger to democracy. when these EU nosey appeasers of arab oil and UN cartelization express concern for israels democracy, its only concern for Israel's left which is NOT democratic.
7. Sure they are satisfied with Egypt, Jordon, Saudi Arabia ...
Norman   (01.12.11)
8. european concerns
alexi   (01.12.11)
euro diplomats can take their concerns and shove it up their rear ends. Their appeasement gave rise to hitler and now they kiss arabs at the expense of israel. They can bloody well mind their own bloody business. Tony blair and catherine ashton are not welcome and should concern themselves with their islamic radicals in london.
9. Europe : Spare us the crocodile tears.
(01.12.11)
10. They're 4 decades late ,...
split ,   US   (01.12.11)

11. Democracy in danger
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (01.12.11)
How many of the responders here are familiar with European history? Regretfully they DO know the signs and yes, our democracy is in serious danger. We cannot go on in this manner and remain even a partial democracy. If you really care - and want a democracy rather than a theocracy or a dictatorship - you must begin to act now to prevent the extreme right and the ultra-orthodox from taking over this country.
12. Their own house is on fire
peterthehungarian ,   Israel   (01.12.11)
While European diplomats are worrying about Israeli democracy - the present president of the EC the Hungarian government limits the freedom of the press, limits the power of the Constitutional Court. European hipocrisy (sorry diplomacy) at its best...
13. Israel's strength
Manduccio ,   London   (01.12.11)
came from the diversity of its citizens and their ability to create solutions that represent the amalgamation of its components. Therefore, Lieberman's solutions, which clearly are derived from the former Soviet Union, do not fit Israel. Who wants another Soviet crackdown on NGOs even if they are considered harmful to Israel. You can't correct a mistake with a bigger mistake.
14. Avigdor Ante Portas
Robert Soran ,   European Union   (01.12.11)
European diplomats in Israel - where the Foreign Ministry is closed for a meshugge civil servants strike ... - are closely monitoring the developments and radicalization on Israel's political stage, and are fearful that the democratic character of the State is in danger. Europeans know best to interpret the birth signs of authoritarian systems and the rise of dictators.
15. George Orwell would be so proud
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.12.11)
Talk about Doublespeak. I was told I was a 'thug' for defending civil rights. Israel is endangering democracy by exercising it now. Somehow Europe has forgotten what the world means. Europe is attempting to overthrow the democratically elected government of Israel and we are somehow causing injury to democracy? What a stupid comment.
16. Europeans should mind their own f___ing business
Jake Vogel ,   USA   (01.12.11)
17. Euro Hypocrites
Louis Fried ,   Woodbridge Canada   (01.12.11)
My only fear is that Israel will turn into a European country- inefficient, hypocritical, condescending and eager to pander to its Arab citizens. The absurdity and hypocrisy of these Europeans knows no limits!
18. I hope Europes economy CRASHES! get out of Israels business!
David   (01.12.11)
19. ARE LEFTISTS ABOVE THE LAW ?! NO !
(01.12.11)
20. Perhaps Lieberman should
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.12.11)
.... write a letter to his assorted opposite numbers throughout Europe expressing Israel's grave concern that the Europe is caving in to the violent and decidedly non-European Moslem elements leeching off the largesse of the assorted European countries. That one result of the activities of these belligerent Moslem elements has been increased anti-Semitism and acts of violence against Jews and Jewish institutions and that Israel feels, given its sordid history with respect to its Jewish populations, that democracy in Europe is very definitely under threat. In a separate postscript to the U.K. foreign minister, Mr. Lieberman might add -- "What will it take to open your eyes? A dead heir to the throne or two and a great big pile of dead royals?"
21. Nosy bunch! Who put you in control of us?
Abe Cohen   (01.12.11)
Nosy bunch! Who put you in control of us? What chutzpah! We will check all sources of funding by foreign sources operating in Israel, especially if they have a political agenda and especially if it undermines our national security and spits out lies about us! The EU will end up causing a civil war here and the LEFT will lose even more!
22. europeans finance half the leftist groups in Israel
zionist forever   (01.12.11)
If I was a European I would be concerned about the idea of openness of funding if I was the one paying the bills for these groups who seek to influence government policy making. Just think these groups that claim to represent Israelis and the countries best interests suddenly have to disclose that all their funding came from Europe suddenly start to loose their credibility. Demanding financial openness from these NGOs strenghens democracy not weakens it. Many of these European countries who are criticising and saying that this is a threat to democracy have similar laws of their own but if Israel tries introducing these laws its a threat to democracy. Liberman has a bad habit of saying the wrong things at the wrong time and sometimes his ideas are a little radical but overall he has been the best thing to happen to Israeli politics for a long time. He has been willing to speak his mind and doesn't worry about political correctness.
23. Europeans Were the Ones Who Undermined Israels Democracy!
iNet Fraud ,   USA   (01.12.11)
As if the europeans did not intend to undermine the democracy of the "Jewish State of Israel"? They are concerned? Well, they've done a fine job of ensuring it with their liberal fanaticism and financial backing to nations and orgs that want Israel gone. This whole thing wreaks of europes hatred towards the Jews and their JOY at the demise of ANY Jew, let alone the Jewish nation. The world has lost its marbles as the egoists vie to return to their glorious past as butchers and thieves, spending centuries raping and pillaging their way through the world and leaving the trappings of a political explosion at every turn in their wake. The world would be a far better place if the europeans finally sat down, shut up and stayed out of world affairs altogether. They've destroyed enough of the planet and killed more people throughouy history than anyone could imagine possible. THATS their legacy...and THAT is their "wonderful culture". That said with the gloves still on; europe is a nasty place.
24. EUs "useful Idiots" must not be hampered in their destructiv
Alan ,   SA   (01.12.11)
efforts to scupper Israel
25. A SIMPLE SOLUTION TO EU'S PROBLEM
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (01.12.11)
Accept the State of Israel as a full member of the EU,immediately. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
26. ONLY DEMOCRACY
Michael ,   California, USA   (01.12.11)
Israel has nothing to offer the world except for its democracy in the M.E.. This has been the best selling point Israel has had for years. Now the world is turning away from Israel as it is becoming a Theocracy and is putting forth an anti-democratic agenda in its Knesset and on the streets. No wonder many Israelis are rushing to get citizenship established in the countries of their origin. I am afraid the situation is beyond repair already.
27. Europe is converting to Islam& joining the enemies of Israel
Jason   (01.12.11)
28. the funniest democratic law in israel
frank ,   usa   (01.12.11)
Pretending to be Jewish in Israel is punishable by law with up to one year's imprisonment? On the other hand, if you pretend to be a Muslim or Christian the law does you no harm!
29. The Europeans are so left, they only know left
Eyal ,   USA   (01.12.11)
I guess to the Europeans, radicalizing the left is better? Why don't they say anything to the Republicans in the US, not much difference.
30. EU AntiSemites
Brod ,   USA   (01.12.11)
EU AntiSemites should stop intruding in Israel's internal affairs. It is also unlawful for them to be funding Leftists in Israel to undermine Israel's government and advance its latent agenda against Israel. Israel should kick out these foreign elements from the Land of Israel. They should be regarded as spies.
