2. no secular conversion
JO   (01.14.11)
so even those of Jewish ancestry ( father) will have to become religious, not traditional like most secular Israelis. Conversion by the rabbis means religion in all it's orthodox guises, and strict adherence. Most converts of Jewish ancestry do not want this so most will now choose to be non kosher. A sad waste, that I cannot understand.
3. Which Rabbis are joining the IDF to perform conversions?
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & NY   (01.14.11)
This seems to mean that the committee have decided that they need to be on the conversion team - this is a great way to get the religious into the Army. When do the Rabbis start basic training for the IDF?
4. Within Judaism itself there is democracy.
noa ,   israel   (01.14.11)
Throw these so-called rabbis out!
5. Shas & Yisrael Beiteinu
Michael ,   Haifa   (01.14.11)
A classic Hobbesean situation of "Dog eat Dog"...carry on lads, I'm cheering on both your sides from the stands
6. And who the hell of partial Jews would go to IDF??
John ,   Europe   (01.14.11)
Say your grandfather is Jewish. You came to Israel, filled with love for Jewish nation and Jewish land. You bust your ass on training and you courses to be good and useful member of Israeli community. AND YOU JUMP IN THE POLITICAL SHITTY GAMES LIKE THIS! I personally know 4 people who fit in the previous description. What will become of them just because this rabbis have a field day in political games who will control religion in post-conflict Israel! This is not Shaas, this is Scheiße!
7. Strange - other sources say that they " are valid"
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & NY   (01.14.11)
From Jpost: The rabbis at the meeting decided that all 4,500 conversions conducted by the army are valid, and recommended that Yosef recognize them. The Shas spiritual leader accepted their ruling. "All conversions up until now will be authorized and in the future, conversions will be coordinated with the general conversion system," under the auspices of the Chief Rabbinate, Religious Affairs Minister Yaakov Margi explained in an interview with Army Radio. Margi added that he believes Netanyahu will not let the military conversions bill pass.
8. conversion in IDF
amos ,   jerusalem, israel   (01.14.11)
This may seem like a silly question but: why do these soldiers need to be converted at all? If they want to - fine! Let them go through the same process as any other would-be convert. And if they don't want to convert, they are still considered bnei noah and should have the same rights as any other citizen.
9. How soon can we get rid of the entire rabbinate?
josef   (01.14.11)
The ultraorthodox don't like it?, let them go back to lithuania ' lock, stock and barrel"; and tell them to take along ALL the lithuanian rabbis with their 'entourage" --- they are a SERIOUS drain on our society, our economy; a bunch of lazy bums, satisfied in depleating our treasury under Bibi's benevolent eye . As far as shas' fear that it would lead in a decline of the rabbinate status, The sooner they go into oblivion, the better we will ALL be. We do require fresh air.
10. conversion
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (01.14.11)
If it is written on the conversion act who agreed for the conversion ,it gives the needed information to the candidates who want to marry a convert. So it could be like for Kosher food. There are all kind of Kashrut ...for the more or less strict consumers. No need to quarrel.I would advise the stricter conversion ,to be able to marry everybody.
11. Who gives a flying felafel
S.MIchael ,   Carversville, USA   (01.14.11)
what the rabbis think about this? It's not like they contribute anything useful anymore to society. They should be like the Rabbis of the Talmud, making money as shoemakers and doctors before they get the right to tell anyone else what to do.
12. Jewish Naturalisation (vs Convertion or Isr Citizenship)
Justin Case ,   Brasil   (01.15.11)
In the case of our people I always guessed about this issue, in face of the usual focus of Citizenship vs Religion...... The former just a legal status, the latter a matter of faith,,,, just enough if we Jews were nothing more than a fundamentalist religion which took over an exclusive discriminative country only for itself? But if we are truely a national people, besides to a religion, entitled to have its own national sovereign life, where is the possibility of other people joining it as it should be a meaningfull and attractive human political culture beyond of faith? Well, though its clear enough to me that our ancient national birth was linked to faith and just doesnt properly support, for instance, remaining nationally jewish while adopting Christianism which exactly drops off the national character of Jewishness, where is the place for a gentile to join and merge in our national character (as far as it really exists) without needing to have even more faith than we ourselves have, in Halacha? I noticed then that we dont discuss about Jewish Naturalisation which seems clearly to be what happens "de facto" when gentiles adopt and defend not only our country ( of two nations ) but rather the jewish nation, and merge in its culture language and religion, in fact. This law of the military conversions seems to adrress very wisely this issue. But I'd rather preffer a process of Jewish naturalisation instead, since we are a true national people !!
13. Reporter Doesn't Understand Halacha
Robert ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (01.16.11)
Rabbi Yosef would not have approved the conversions if they weren't legitimate. Even if he doesn't say it explicitly, he is most likely basing his ruling on the Rambam's opinion in the Mishneh Torah which describes a fairly lenient conversion process and which also makes it clear that there is no such thing as retroactively annulling a conversion. Just google Rabbi Marc Angle and conversions for a detailed discussion of the issue.
