olim hadashim ,   tel aviv/israel   (01.22.11)
2. Tunisian lesson for Palestinians
Salma ,   Palestine   (01.22.11)
No matter how long it takes, the will of the people that win in the end : ) Yes, the success of the people taking the law into their hands and bringing about change proved that Western support for authoritarian regimes in the Middle East is not a recipe for survival..... nothing could stand in the face of the disgruntled public.
3. Is there any similarity between Tunicia and Israel.
john ,   cardiff   (01.22.11)
there does not appear any similarity with turmoil in Tunicia and calm in Israel notably in the occupied area. the author has attempted a plusible thesis for the defence of Israel. He forgot entirely that in the age of Rockets, small mountain does not offer any defensive capability. it is the peace between the parties, on one hand and peace between Israel and Arab states on the other hand which could provide security for Israel. However, if Himalya could be shifted to Israel, it wil certainly protect Israel from rockets according to this thesis.
4. why did you come here?
hamuda ,   gaza   (01.22.11)
Argentina can be a better place to establish your state.
5. #3 he talks about tanks, not 'rockets'
t-man ,   Württemberg   (01.22.11)
for a reason: you cannot invade only with missiles (you probably mean that by 'rockets') fired from a distance, the same goes for air raids. flat lands make an invasion easier, that means driving or marching in, so he is perfectly right when he writes, that mountains are obstacles.
6. to#4
Marcelo ,   Berlin   (01.22.11)
and you shoud have stayed in egypt and jordan, where all of you came from....
7. to #3 John
Marcelo ,   Berlin   (01.22.11)
you didn't get the comment at all...the author shows that no single muslim country is predictable. All they have is a regime and as they are muslims, they cannot keep their word and arrangements but only violate them at any price. The issue with valleys mean that no single inch of Israel will be given to the so-called pals. As for the defense of Israel, her attack to their enemies is the key so no 73 yom-kippur war can start again.
8. # 3 Dear John of Cardiff
Iris ,   USA   (01.22.11)
The Allies vanquished Germany and Japan in WWII, but it was not until they were overrun and occupied by US & Allies in Germany & Okinawa that they surrendered. Today, US etc, forces in large areas of Afghan yet Taliban still fighting & not defeated as not all of area taken. The author of this item is correct.
9. to #4 give us back Medina
Golan ,   Modiin   (01.22.11)
And end your illegal occupation of lands west of the Hejaz.
10. Hamuda-Good idea but PalArabs have flooded in there already!
Alan ,   SA   (01.22.11)
11. and what about Lebanon & Gaza?
Yitz ,   Israel   (01.22.11)
...same story. Arabs disgruntlement with selves is destabilizing.
12. #4 It's home.
Solomon ,   Bklyn   (01.22.11)
Jews returned to their homeland to find usurpers, who conquered the land in the 600's CE/AD. Jews were there centuries before the arrival of Islam. The Romans named the area Palestina, while the Jews were there even before the Romans.
13. Israyel made Jews more vulnerable
SyrianFreedomEagle   (01.22.11)
Hello, my friends! Many times I hear that Israeel is the homeland of the Jewish people. Finally, the Jews have their own country! But wait, lets think about that... A homecountry should be safe. It should give me a save home for my family and me... I must feel secure in my home. Otherwise, I will not consider it my home. The terminology home is closely related to security. I think you, my friends, agree with this. If the state of Ysrael was not created, most of the "Israielis" would be living in Europe and in America, which are safe, democratic and secure. However, the Israilies chose Palestine. And is there any security for you? No! Actually, you have lost security when you came here. Now, you are confronted with anger and frustration of the victims that you created. 60 years and your enemies, who have lost most wars, are still not tired of attacking you. 60 years and your security is diminishing from year to year... The balance of (military) power is moving against you in favor of your enemies. You must fear about your life and the life of your children every second... A life in the US or in Canada or in Germany or even in Russia would be much safer for you and your children.
14. The time for arguments is past and gone. It's time to act.
Schreiber   (01.22.11)
I may be repeating myself from now on but I need to reiterate this once again. These arguments have been made already. Most people in Israel are already convinced, particularly after the Gush Katif experience. Yes, the land is not only historically important but strategically vital as well. This is one point where religious and seculars agree on. The problem, Mr. Ettinger, is that your government is completely indifferent to these arguments. All they care about is how to keep the coalition stable at any price. And their jobs. What we really need from you and other writers at this point is ideas on how to make the government act before the PA declares independence. Annexation is the only effective way to preempt their takeover of Jewish land. The PA has set August as the time when they will declare independence. Whether the legal technicalities allow them to do so is of no concern to them or to us. They have vast international support and the Israeli government has none. They are firm in their demands, while your government buckles under pressure. Result? The PM will withdraw. Not immediately, but a little at the time, until the settlers, threatened, unarmed and abandoned by their government, will have to leave. We need ideas on how to make the government listen to the people and act accordingly. I don't have the right to tell anyone what to publish, but please reflect on it. It's time to engage in action to save your land from passive surrender by your government. Any ideas?
15. Excellent analysis.

16. #2 Will of the people?
steve G ,   NYC   (01.22.11)
@#2 Will of the people? Egypt has not been governed by the will of the people in almost 5000 years. What makes you think they are going to start now?

Daniela   (01.22.11)
I have to remind you that Palestine never existed. Israel was born twice. Palestine never existed and it doesn't exist. Palestines are arabs, they are part of you, Israel is not a part of the arab world, Israel is open to evrebody but it is the jewish state. the arab world is big enough for the palestinians too.Syria is a large country you may give them a piece of it.
18. The author thrives on fear
Jeff, Ex-Marine ,   San Diego, US   (01.22.11)
His articles are begining to morph into one that is entirely based on fear, bigotry and ignorance. People who hold this point of view will resort to any lesson to justify Israel's stranglehold over the occupied territories. Like the author has clearly demonstrated, this lesson can be as far fetched as you like. Your imagination is the only limit. Those who seek justice for both Israelis and Palestinians should take part in the boycott campaign until the far right end their colonial pipe dream called Greater Israel. I support it wholeheartedly
19. ISRAEL!: 8 MILES WIDE **IS** SUICIDE

20. #4 Jews in Jerusalam 1,650 years before Mohammed
Yaawqove ,   Israel   (01.22.11)
born. Thats why. This is our national homeland for near 4000 years. Arab culture invaded conquered and occupied not only Israel but all of north africa and the rest of the levant. end the arab occupation! Arabs=Arabian peninsula, not Israel. Be our friend and stay, be our enemy and go back to arabian peninsula or one of your 22 arab countries or the place you came from before arriving in israel to work between 1880-1967
21. 13 Syrian eaglet: Thanks for acknowledging
Yaawqove ,   Israel   (01.22.11)
this is our homeland 2000+ years before the Arab invasion conquest and occupation; yes this is our homeland. 2000x better to have our homeland than to rely on the goodwill of tyrants like you. 2000 yrs of rape murder oppresion humiliation of our parents children siblings grandparents best friends neighbors. Tell you what, Syria and every arab and muslim country will no longer exist before Israel is not the eternal homeland of the Jewish people. The Eternal reigns forever and ever, He created the world and gave this sliver to the descendants of Yaawqove, by the leadership of Moses.

ORA ,   Jerusalem   (01.22.11)
Israel needs a leader, who is a man of vision, who inderstands that the Tora is vital to keep Israel. If we don t have that ,all the actions you will engage in,will be bandaids. The Arabs are strong because they have an ideal. They know exactly what they want. We will keep our land ,if we listen to Hashem s laws.It is very clearly written in "Shema Israel"
23. a friend from Syria?
Claudedeparis ,   France   (01.22.11)
*14 Your message is similar to that of an old american woman who invited Israelis to leave Israel and go back to where Jews came from, ie Europe... Your leader and his father tried to do it many times and they failed. You hate Israelis and you hate Jews, I am sure, but I think that your main aim is to destroy Israel rather than to create a Palestinian country. You are not my friend, you are the citizen of a dictatorial country. Israel will survive no matter what you write. However I expect you will belong one day to a modern country and you will leave the middle ages you are still living in.
24. #4Stop your myth jews have always been in israel ......
rachel ,   usa   (01.22.11)
way before islam and the arabs kicked 1 million jews from arab countries ........just like you are all now doing to the Christians
25. #13 your no philosopher and pretty ignorant of history
rachel ,   usa   (01.23.11)
1 million jews were kicked of arab countries most israelis are from there .So don't start with the Europen crap ....
26. The ’99 Luftballons’ perspective
Egon B.E. Friberger ,   Brussels, Belgium   (01.22.11)
Thank you for adding not an opinion but a tangible and realistic risk analysis to the actual discussions. May I relieve your stress somehow with reprinting this more frivolic but concord reflections for those less prone to your realism: i. mount a ‘montgolfiade’ to take a quiet view around the region. The potential blaze of widespread ‘instability’ arising from the smoke in Lebanon and Tunisia, and from the smell of Palestinian settlement rhetoric leaves no time for petty party politics. Mr. Ehud Barak certainly has seen that from upon his horse’s saddle; ii. pretending the former commander of a elite unit of Ts’H’L - a democratic army that saved Israel from a second step ‘Endlösung’ – has not Israel’s core interests top-of-mind and top-of-heart, well, that is one of the few things calling for both sobbing and singing the right songs.
27. #22 Ora - Actually, you'd be safer without a Leader
Schreiber   (01.23.11)
Leaders can be co-opted, threatened with police investigations, or privately "persuaded" to tone down their demands. Also, leaders may not be to everyone's taste. They can be too secular and be distrusted by the religious, or too religious and scare off the seculars. The more people at the head of the movement, the better. That makes it harder for adversaries to put pressure on them. Just keep the message as simple as possible. Two words: Annexation Now. Something seculars and observants can agree on. A large, informal, but intensely dedicated group of people joining forces to achieve one single practical goal would be unstoppable. No need to get bogged down with philosophical or theological discussions. Just concentrate on making the government listen to you. I'm certainly not advocating revolution, but an effective movement to lobby for what is right. There are MKs that will agree with you, and intellectuals who can offer background and moral support. Young people could provide social media logistics. The thing to remember is that the power is in you, the people. Trust yourselves. Annexation is of vital importance for many reasons, but what is common to everyone is that the land is strategically essential for Israel's survival. The clock is ticking. It's not whether the PA will declare independence. It's whether it will do it in August, as announced, or at another time. But it's coming!
28. #4 Would mind answering a few questions ?
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (01.23.11)
They would help to prove that you belong in Palestine in the first place For example: When was the country of Palestine founded and by whom? Where did the Palestinian people originate from? What were Palestine's borders? Who were its neighbours? What language did the Palestinians speak? What writing did they use? What manuscripts or records did they leave whether written or engraved? What was their religion? Where are their temples? What monuments attest to their existence? What was the name of their capital? Name its other major cities. Who were your last three rulers

A life in the US or in Canada or in Germany or even in Russia would be much safer for you and your children. The same would be true for anyone living in a Muslim country.
