1. Give him a break
Dan ,   Brisbane Australia   (01.28.11)
Look, he didn't hurt anyone, he bent some rules. Let him pay a small fine fine, undo any improvements made to land not belonging to him. But don't fire him, the two things are unrelated. I built a mirpesset on my house without council permission. Its beautiful, nice view of the garden, I love it. The Brisbane city council is a beaurocratic nightmare. Every permision is so expensive and takes so long, also a little food for the camels can go a long way down here. So i didn't ask for persission and they will never realise or even care that it is there, so they don't deserve cooperation. That doesn't make me a bad man, I might be good at gardening, should I now loose my job as a gardener? IF galant is a good soldier, it will be silly to loose him over this.
2. Ethics
Ricardo Macher ,   Karnei Shomron IL   (01.28.11)
Anybody proposed by Ehud Barak is under deep scrutiny for the simple reason that as the saying goes: "Show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are". The basic problem is that if Galant's conduct is unethical and he plays Barak's tune against Ashkenazi, it's nearly sure he will be despited!
3. hinge on real estate issues?
Talula ,   Israel   (01.28.11)
Are you kidding? This man was/is supposed to be the next chief of staff - is the fact that he wanted to steal public land for a driveway because he feels entitled' supposed to be swept under the rug? I hope not, This single incident has given us an insight into his integrity and honesty - gotta tell you, it's not very impressive. It's not like he's the only candidate - find someone else - better still, keep Gabi sh'lanu !!
4. No power-abuser should even be allowed to remain an officer
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (01.28.11)
5. Real and unreal estate,
Philip ,   Afula, Israel   (01.28.11)
The affair has nothing to do with real estate ,its about the mans character and whether or not a lier is suitable for being the leader of the armed forces. the real estate is only the vehicle for issues.
6. Missing the Point
Joe ,   Israel   (01.28.11)
It is about character, honesty, lack of character and dishonesty.
7. Bizarre Reasoning
Steve ,   Ra'anana Israel   (01.28.11)
The excuses that the Barnea provides are an embarrassment. Those of with power should know that there is a clear point when it is being abused. And the lesson for others lacking it is terrible. And even more so in the IDF. Barnea's reasoning is what gets us into trouble.
8. excellent article it is in the public interest that Galant
avrom ,   bet shemesh   (01.28.11)
is appointed Bibi and Barak have determined that Galant ias the best CoS to defend all our lives it is therefore in the public interest that the Galant appointment go ahead if i steal public land i would expect to be punished but it is grossly unfair that i lose my job This issue is much bigger than Galant It is in the public interest that his appontment be confirmed If the 2 B's Bibi and Barak want him he is good enough for me 2B or not 2B that is the answer
9. GALANT
noel ,   HERZYLIA, ISRAEL   (01.28.11)
ANY SUBJECT SHOWING THE CHARACTER, INTEGRITY, HONESTY, DECENCY, TRUSTWORTHYNESS, MORAL FIBER OF A PERSON SHOULD BE WEIGHED IN EVERY APPOINTMENT OF PUBLIC FIGURE DESPITE ABILITY IN SPECIFIC AREA OF EXPERTISE, MEANING, IF GALANT WERE THE BEST GENERAL IN THE WORLD, HE SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED. HE IS LAST THING WE NEED, LIKE NEGBI, OLMERT, KATZAV, DERI, BINIZRI & ALL THE REST OF THE LIARS & THIEVES DESTROYING THE COUNTRY. ABOUT TIME THEY SAT IN JAIL SO OTHERS WOULD HEED THE EXAMPLE SET
10. It is impossible to steal land
dan ,   brisbane australia   (01.28.11)
That accusation is impossible. infamatory and sensationalised to cause damage and propogated by idots. Land is part of the earth, you can put some in a bucket and take it away, but the land you are talking about is legal, man made, unmarked boundaries of ownership. Galant simply built a driveway so that he could better access land that he does own. Its not exclusive, there is no wall around it, anyone can use it if they are going in the direction that it travels. This is clearly a misdemeaner. Barak and bibi reckon he is the best option to protect your lives, would jepordise that for some stupid issue that should only be dealt with by the courts. Clearly the cabinet is in the best position to see who is best for the job, they have access to all infromation. Let me tell you that Galant is no tzadik , the same goes for bibi and barak and probably every other military and political leader that has served modern Israel. I would agree in the case of moshe katzav, if you rape someone you must go to jail. But I think a little bit of chuzpah, a little bit of arrogance and "badboy" in your leaders is not always a bad thing, When I say badboy I mean figures like stanley Mc crystal. Sometimes the rules just get in the way. if we can find away around them its not such a bad thing, the gemorah does it all the time Example Eruv
11. ever had a parking ticket?
dan ,   brisbane australia   (01.28.11)
Hey hypocrite, your safety is on the line.
12. Real Estate Issues
B.D. Shepen ,   Caesarea   (01.29.11)
IT IS NOT," REAL ESTATE ISSUES", IT IS HONESTY FRAUD AND THEFT OF PUBLIC LAND BY A CAREER ARMY MAN SCHEDULED TO BE THE TOP MILITARY LEADER IN THE COUNTRY
13. Gallant defenders
Alf Red ,   Londonistan - Israel   (01.29.11)
I could hardly believe my eyes reading this blind-silly article. As if the question here is a couple of sq m of land. Same for half of talkback writers. THAT is the deep problem of Israel today - so many people do not even understand the issue here. It's not about "legality", it is about morality. The person who's happy to be satisfied with Galant's appointment because "BARAK himself" trusts him - should remember the many "Waterloos" our little local napoleon left wherever he hadn't BARAKH. I think the Barak's recommendation should be the last thing going FOR the acceptance of this candidate. No joke!
14. Barnea misses the point
Eldar ,   Haifa, Israel   (01.29.11)
Israelis are sick and cynical of corruption in their leadership. Politicians and, increasingly, army generals are disregarding as self-seeking, greedy individualists who are thinking about their own bank accounts rather than their country's wellbeing. The country is sick of $50,000/talk honorariums for Barak and Bibi (when they weren't in office), first class hotels, business dealings (Weitzman Shiri and Barak), expensive homes (Bibi, Barak, Galant), corruption (Leiberman, Olmert, Sharon), checking their stocks before going to war (Halutz) and all the other ways knesset members, business leaders and army generals think their better than everyone else. Now we have an ethics panel to weed that sort out and allow the selfless leaders to rise to the top.
15. Lindenstrauss?!!!!
Salomon Mizrahi ,   Brazil   (01.29.11)
Is he German?
16. Galant not chosen for ability
(01.29.11)
The argument that Galant is the best man to defend Israel so therefore his character flaws and adherence to the law should be overlooked, is a bad argument. Galant was chosen more for a political agenda than hios ability. I am sick of generals who talk with their stock brokers on their way to war.
17. Dayan also stole ancient artifact but still a hero
avrom ,   bet shemesh   (01.29.11)
18. Things we know that we don't know
Pinhas Bayit ,   Bet HaKerem   (01.29.11)
We know when we're being dishonest and when we are lying. We don't know if and when we will be found out for those sins. Often we know that the things we do are for public praise and support, not because we should do them anyway. Yoav Galant knows about his theft of public land and his lies in an affidavit denying it. If he doesn't then he's a psychopath and shouldn't be entrusted with the lives of our sons. And if he knows the truth then he should step aside from his candidacy for Chief of Staff, and not allow his arrogance to lead him blindly on, because he is tainted and he cannot be trusted with the lives of our sons and if he stays in the running and actually gets the role he doesn't deserve, then he is guilty of bringing our army and our state into disrepute and we the nation should not allow ourselves to be so shamed.
19. Rebel
Yobo ,   Australia   (01.30.11)
It seems the only way to enhance your financial prospects in Israel is through graft and corruption. The words morality and character are absent from our media commentator. Seeing the region is in revolt with political and economic turmoil it may be a good time to clean out the crooks that lead Israel.
20. Only pure Jesus's apostles or Buddhas need apply
mea   (01.30.11)
In america we started doing this business of gutting every person in public life and now look at the cascade of clowns running our country into the ground. Not a good example to follow Israel. Galant widened his driveway. Thank G-d he didn't add a chicken coop or he would be hanging from the gallows. It's s-t-u-p-i-d.
21. Galant
Joseph Katz ,   Jerusalem   (02.01.11)
A targeted assassination? May be. But iying to the state controller, to the justices is against the law. This is not an assassination anymore, it is suicide. Like Ramon, like Katzav, like Cohen of the Police force, like,... like...There is no shortage of names. Morality: use you influence if you believe that is OK but it should be within the law and don't ever be lie especially to justices.
