1. It's about time the world gets rid of the oil addiction
Matityahu ,   Slovenia   (01.29.11)
It's like a drug addiction, you know it hurts you in the long run, but you can't do without it.
2. Only if he conviences leasing and fleet managers
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & NY   (01.29.11)
Most of the cars on the road in Israel are company cars. So until there is a proper leasing option for electric cars his hopes will not take off. For leasing cars to work they need to work out the model for where to put the 2 chargers that come with each car, how to handle the buy-back at the end of the lease, and how to handle distance driving as there are not enough public charging points out there yet. All in all it is possible - but the company cars are the ones that will lead or kill this in Israel
3. The best defence weapon
David M.   (01.29.11)
Electric cars are not only good for environment and quality of air we breathe, but are the best defense against radical Islam which is being bankrolled by oil. Everyone who cares about Israel and freedom should drive one. Currently I drive hybrid Prius and plan to switch to a fully electric car as soon as they become available.
4. I hope for the best on this
Ron ,   OC, US   (01.29.11)
In America where there are to many large gas guzzlers there will not be any quick fix until gas goes above $4.00 per gallon or more. But, in America we do have choices: Volts, Leaf's, Cruise, Fiestas, Sentras, Civics, Focus, Versa's and Cubes. We will be buying these cars and given enough of them Saudi and Iran will go down the toilet.
5. Mr. Agassi is a hero
Progressive Populist ,   Stock/Jer-Swe/Isr   (01.29.11)
Most people and governments just indugled themselves in empty talk and declarations. This guy acts. He makes a difference. Brilliant.
6. Why can I not buy an electric car and charge it in my garage
Judah ,   Golan Heights,ISRAEL   (01.29.11)
7. Good luck!!!
Daniel ,   Switzerland   (01.29.11)
I'm eager to see the electric cars finally arriving in my country too, remplacing the old stinky noisy petrol vehicles.
8. Nonsense ,he has a business idea ,not a technological break-
ab   (01.29.11)
through. Battery with ultra fast charging time would be such a breakthrough ,but Agass hails fast switching of batteries ,where the spent ones would still be slowly and inefficiently charged.
9. To #2 Where did you get your figure for
jason white ,   afula,israel   (01.29.11)
most cars in Israel are company cars? It is not even close. Most are privately owned. You may see cars with company names still on them that have been sold to private owners.
10. #8 Of course it's a business concept also
Matityahu ,   Slovenia   (01.29.11)
These days you can't persuade anyone to invest without having a solid economic plan. Switching stations are there because as of yet, there are no batteries that can be charged in 3 minutes available. They have to work with what they've got for now, through time the battery technology will improve and consequently more efficient solutions will be implemented. The time for switching on to the electric is now, I don't see any drop in oil prices, do you?
11. #10.Agassi&his concept would be ruined if super fast
ab   (01.29.11)
charing of batteries was invented. It's a business concept ,nothing else ,no reason to swoon over it.
12. Solar power is the ultimate recharger, natural gas will help
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (01.30.11)
as you can run cars, trucks and buses on that too, and hydrogen will come on line in the future. Oil will be needed for jetliners and lubricants but not for cars.
13. Electrics will remain a niche for a long time
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (01.30.11)
Electric vehicles add complexity and cost, the latter only made somewhat more tolerable by tax subsidies - government in effect favoring one solution over another. But if the intent is to reduce fossil fuel consumption or the carbon footprint, there are alternatives that are far more cost effective - natural gas and clean diesel to name just two - that don't require major upgrades in infrastructure, industry or routine. Agassi's hope that "wind or other sources" will suffice to provide the needed electricity is fanciful. And I for one wouldn't trade dependence the many fossil fuel sources for a single major supplier (China) of critical rare earth elements needed for much of the "green" economy.
14. Agassi is indeed a hero
Roscio ,   Rome, Italy   (01.30.11)
For saving the world from its addiction to petroleum, for ending oil's funding of Islamic Imperialism, and for saving the environment. By the way, he has already developed battery-changing robot stations that can remove your old battery and insert your new fully-charged battery in less time than it takes to fill up your oil guzzling, Saudi-supporting dinosaur. See his website www.abetterplace.com for the video. I have no investment in this, I am just a huge fan!
15. Nissan has a "Better Way"
Dave ,   sf-usa   (01.30.11)
They have an eCar which can be charged at home and needs no battery "swap". Swapping 500 pound batteries every (40 miles?) is already obsolete. Google- Tesla electric Car (200mi+ range , 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds made in silicon valley. The iPad runs about 10 hours of video on a tiny new battery per charge-battery technology is where you should put your brain power and investment money-not in clumsy hard-wired "stations" to litter the landscape while Mr Agassi, who's spirit I admire, collects his charging fees .It's a better way to make money (if you ask me).
16. A better idea
(01.30.11)
if he would turn his attention to the coal burning power stations in israel, this is really smelly and bad for the land especially if you live close by, cause the elecricity to the cars is going to come from here?
17. Better Monopoly
jeremy ,   Israel   (01.30.11)
Agassi is in it only for the money ($700 million so far!!). The idea stinks, but he has all the big players in Israel behind him, including of course the electric company. They will make millions off everyone because as soon as they hit a certain # of electric cars, the price for a battery switch and charge will double and triple. If you go electric, only buy cars you can charge at home. Otherwise, I guarantee that Agassi will squeeze you until you cry, as he laughs all the way to the bank
18. #11 Invent them now
Matityahu ,   Slovenia   (01.30.11)
19. The carbon footprint of the electric-grid will increase
Engineer ,   Tel-Aviv   (01.30.11)
The carbon footprint of the electric-grid will increase, because most places around the world (including Israel) cannot maintain current and future power-grid demands from wind and solar energy. Natural gas and hydro-thermal plants are feasible in a few places, but not most, and they too increase carbon footprint, as well as running-out after some years... And nuclear plants are really out of the question if you're worried about yourself and your children... So the Better-Place solution will fail the test of time. Perhaps a viable solution is some hybrid type of car (including, for example, energy from braking, etc. in addition to some smaller gasoline engine).
20. Agassi not a hero- just for the big $
mick ,   israel   (01.30.11)
Agassi is not a hero , just want to create another monopoly and then milk the cow dry, why instead of moving from petrol station to electric one does he not promote single solaire powered home station for recharging electric cars then no need for new power cables and the rest but of course the idea is not the environement but to break one monopoly in order to create a new one while making us pay as much as possible , cheap trick Agassi...
21. THROW SOLAR POWER PANEL on roof and walla!
Yosi ,   Gilo-Jerusalem   (01.30.11)
All the "issues" go away, no carbone footprint, no battery switching, short trips. The cells are now much better then ever. Open your eyes, stop going with corporate greednicks.
22. #18 ,perhaps I would
ab   (01.30.11)
23. Not perfect
Tomer ,   Hod Hasharon, Israel   (01.31.11)
Agassi's plan isn't perfect, but I think it will provide a major stimulus to moving people from gas to electric. That has to be a good thing. "Range anxiety" is one of the major stumbling blocks to widespread acceptance of electric cars, and battery swap stations will help overcome that. In any event. it's nice to see our country taking a lead here. Who knows, one day we might be able to drive into Tel Aviv without seeing that ugly brown cloud hovering above!
24. In a small country like Israel the solution is mass transit
Al   (01.31.11)
Israel is tiny and does not have to deal with weather variations such as extreme cold and snow blizzards. The solution lies in electric trains running up and down the country. There are enough roads for industrial/commercial use. The solution lies in 21 century mass transit. Get people out of their cars and make public transit efficient safe and cheap.
25. more charging options
Steve Factor ,   Los Angeles, USA   (02.02.11)
Better Place is building vehicles you can refuel in less time than a gasoline fill-up. When you have more time, like overnight, plug it in for regular charge. Better place is also installing recharge stations throughout Israel for you to fill up while shopping, during meetings, at restaurants. If you are near Tel Aviv visit the Better Place center. Test drive an electric vehicle. Even my mom was impressed.
