1. Give it a week and if the riots don't stop
Joe ,   Ohio, USA   (01.30.11)
I expect the army will start to lose faith in their ability to back Mubarak, and a transition to new leadership will start. I think Egypt MAY be able to weather this storm with out falling to the fundamentalist in the short term, but long term I see Egypt slowing moving in the fundamentalist direction just like Turkey.
2. Tyrant Hosni Mubarak, GAME OVER

3. mubarak
sjoerd ruurd..... ,   planet earth   (01.31.11)
it proves that the dictator hosni mubarak is self-conceited, unteachable and unscrupulous, as many other dictators and autocrats..
4. the man-god
cristian ,   bs as arg   (01.31.11)
there are two examples of man-god over the earth through history:at first the pharaoh who has power over people,he is allpowerful what he says it must be done,he lives a comfortable material life meanwhile people have less than him,it does not matter if he says or does wrong things,he can manipulate people with money because he is rich and on the other hand Jesus who the people is him,he has no power,he lives a humble life,he is looking for the right word and action and he is looking for the spiritual life before material things because peace is more important than being rich.Since the beggining of creation two men believed they were the man-god on earth:the pharaoh of egypt and Jesus of israel.
5. Ethiopia threatens Egypt over the Nile
Ethiojegna ,   Addis Ababa Ethiopia   (01.31.11)
ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) – Egypt could not win a war with Ethiopia over the River Nile and is also supporting rebel groups in an attempt to destabilise the Horn of Africa nation, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said in an interview. Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya signed a new deal to share the waters in May, provoking Egypt to call it a “national security” issue. Meles said he was not happy with the rhetoric coming from the Egyptians but dismissed the claims of some analysts that war could eventually erupt. “I am not worried that the Egyptians will suddenly invade Ethiopia,” Meles told Reuters in an interview. “Nobody who has tried that has lived to tell the story. I don’t think the Egyptians will be any different and I think they know that.”

8. The Peace is Getting Icy
Noah Lev ,   HollywoodUSA   (01.31.11)
I never stay up nights worrying over the fate of 80m Egyptians, to be honest. I doubt they care much about US/Israel politics also. Ahmad Mahood doesnt concern himself. He worries over whether his donkey can sustain the tigors ot farm life. China has 500m peasants..India, almost twice. Who cares? Its whether Egypt will reneg on the treaty, and send 10,000 tanks and 500,000 soldiers to the border with Israel..arm the Palestinians for JIhad...close ranks with Iran and Syria that keeps me up nights. The Arab Leagues Pres is an Eygptian. Egypt has oil, and gets our 2b in hard earned tax revenue. It got back the Sinai (and oil fields) to stay quiet. All loans were extinguished to US. But the peace is still icy and unpredictable (sorry, I mean predictable) Already there are cries for liberating Jaffa.
9. Vertigo
Hmm. ,   Chicago   (01.31.11)
Mubarak is acting like nothing so much as a stubborn old man. Clearly he is out of touch with his own country and likely has been for the past thirty years. Things are likely going to get worse before they get better.
10. those calling for mubarak's demise
dani   (01.31.11)
are crazy. egypt is 80 million poor people and no mubarak, el baradei or obama will ever be able to make rich 80 million arabs without 800 billion barrels of oil. a new leader of egypt will not deliver anything but more of the same. egypt is egypt because of egyptians and the nile, not mubarak. secondly, what mubarak does offer the world is a lynchpin of moderate arab support (with saudi arabia, jordan and morrocco) against hezbollah, radical islamists and iran. if mubarak goes, saudi arabia and jordan will have to go into hibernation, and iran and hezbollah will be ascendent in the arab world. what was a dangerous world before will become downright nightmarish. the economic consequences for americans and the west will be immense. the possibility of a peace agreement with the israelis and palestinians will become nil. this alone could spark a new recession. obama's policy of treating this set of riots like the 2008 iran riots shows his complete lack of understanding of how US interests should guide US foreign policy. bush was a bad president, but obama is just cut from the other side of the same cloth. everybody in america should be praying that mubarak can hold down the fort.
11. Mubarak will not turn Egypt over to Islamic Dictators
yehoshuaJ1e   (01.31.11)
Hosni Mubarak will still be there in 5 months. There is not one true democracy in the mid east. Except Israel.
12. To number 5
john   (01.31.11)
Sorry, no offense but Ethiopian forces, while experienced, would be no match for Egypt's armed forces. Egypt has a very powerful, capable and hi-tech military - something Ethiopia does not have.
13. protestors of unscrupulous opportunists?
seeter than honey ,   far away   (01.31.11)
there might be some of the former but many most here see them as mainly the latter. we see how hard the mubarak family and government has tried to foster a stable economy. it doesn't follow, but you there aren't any stable democracy without that anyway, which, as we all know our history, evolves gradually over years scheming opportunists going for THE egyptian heavyweight so as to get noticed? well they are noticed, but not for what their self-importance expects.

Muhammad, you are an idiot and with idiots like you the World has no chance.
15. Lessons from history must be assimilated
Jorge ,   Tegucigalpa   (01.31.11)
The worst president in U.S. History, Jimmy Carter, wanted democracy in Iran, and got the Mullahs, Bush, got rid of Saddam Hussein in Irak and got caos, now, the brilliant Obama, wants to sack Mubarak, who knows the reality of Arab societies, and probably will get The Muslim Brotherhood(Al Qaeda), then, there goes the neighborhood. The west as a whole is going down the drain, not recognizing the reality of the threat to freedom that a marching radical Islam bent on domination represent for liberty and freedom of religion and Judeo- Christian principles. Wake up before is too late

17. the last state of the man is worst than the first
Matthew28:19 ,   singapore   (01.31.11)
"When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walked through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. the he saith, i will return into my house from whence i came out; ...then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself and they enter in and dwelt there, and THE LAST STATE OF THAT MAN IS WORSE THAN THE FIRST. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation." Matthew12:43-45 Change isn't good all the times, when there's a vacuum in leadership, evil/radical sources will take advantage and lure the gullible by romantic empty promises of reform. Once in control, the last stage is worst than the first, eg. HAMAS! if Muslim Brotherhood take over, Iran will a very willing partner and thus Iran money & weapons will strengthen Hamas thru M.B., and topple Abbas' Fatah. Jordan's M.B. will follow after. This change will roll region backward 40 years. Israel will face hostile from Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt and the nearer to home's Hamas, like Dejavu, yeah? should not have give up Sinai right? so hold on to E Jerusalem, it a matter of time Hamas destroy Fatah. but, fear not, when G-D is with you, whom do your fear? have not many ancient empires tried to destroy you and where are they now?

19. If mubarak stays, the best laid plans of obumma, muslum
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (01.31.11)
brotherhood, el baradi, ackdummyjad and even selma are thwarted by an 82 year old dictator. Not bad if the old codger can pull it off.
20. Egypt
Bernard ,   Reseda, USA   (01.31.11)
If Mubarak is not playing for time and is certain that he wishes to continue in power,he must disperse the crowds on Monday, because if he does not there will be more people every day. Somebody working for him must know this.Or is he planning on becoming head of state, like the British Queen or Shimon Peres?
21. Revolution is a selfish act.
tzina ,   Israel   (01.31.11)
Hundreds of dead, thousands hurt, cancer patients who are waiting for treatments, families waiting for monthly assistance, stores and businesses smashed, infirm or elderly alone, women raped..... I
22. :: No offense - #12
Matty Groves ,   Fairport   (01.31.11)
Your knowledge of geography is rather limited. Egypt has no border with Ethiopia and its navy is in pitiful, how would the "brave" Egyptian army reach land locked Ethiopia? They will have to travel at least 1000 miles in desert conditions through another war torn country, all the while being exposed to the mercy of the strong Ethiopian Airforce, the Egyptian one will be based too far away to help. One more thing Genius, a war with which country did Egypt ever win militarily? Their comfort zone was with simple Soviet made equipment, anything hi-tech and sophisticated is just confusing for them to operate.

27. #17 don't laugh
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (01.31.11)
Don't mock the Egyptians, this time around it will be a lot worse. Israel now has the worst Defense Minister in its history (excepting Peretz). The Egyptian army is no longer equipped with Soviet weapons, but with the best American weapons including tanks that are probably better than ours. Their pilots will probably be American mercenaries. During a war, Hamas will use the rockets it received from Sharon and Hezbolla the rockets it received from Livni to attack all of Israel: airfields, depots and population centers. This time around, spotters in Judea and Samaria will make sure the rockets hit. Ben Gurion airport will be closed. Commandos from Dayton's army (maybe using information received from Uri Blau and Anat Kam) will attack civilian and military targets. Anarchists, extreme Leftists and NGO will try to criminalize and demoralize the IDF.
