1. The early Zionists are spitting in their graves
James ,   Australia   (02.03.11)
Here's how to destroy Israel: Firstly get rid of the people's army by Implementing a law (the Tal Law) which says that religious students don't have to serve. They can protect the country by praying. Watch the number of non-serving Yeshiva students grow from 400 to tens of thousands. Make sure that the religious schools don't teach any actual subjects, only religion. Maths, science, literature, English are all evil hiloni inventions. We don't need real jobs or to learn anything of real use! This is the Holy Land! Make sure the religious don't work. They can live off welfare. That's fine. Not working gives them plenty of time to gender segregate their buses, riot over carparks which are open on Shabbat, riot over an Intel plant to try and force the company to leave the country and riot over some graves that don't even contain any Jewish bones. A light unto the nations indeed.
2. it's SPINNING, not spitting
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (02.03.11)
besides, they are probably spinning (or spitting) in their graves about israeli society in general, both religious AND secular. but then again one never knows how one's dream will turn out in reality, right?
3. What is a modern Israeli literature anyway?
Ariel ,   Europe   (02.03.11)
A subtle art of folding and tying keffieh properly. All the rest is to blame on the evils of "occupation". No wonder students take Jewish philosophy instead of Grossman and that-guy-from-Arad-I-forgot-his-name?
4. TO #3
Simcha ,   So.Cal.USA   (02.03.11)
Anzia Yazerska.s work is a good read. Old world Jewish Orthodoxy in the new modern world . Try Red Ribbon On A White Horse.
5. It's extremely disconcerting to see that
Joe   (02.03.11)
Jewish public schools in Israel are not taught Torah and Gemarra which Jews throughout history for thousands of years were taught, and instead are taught stupidities from some atheists and Apikorsim who do not believe in the fundamentals of faith.
6. #5 Joe, people have a choice
Avi ,   Israel   (02.03.11)
It is a persons basic human right to belive or not to belive religion and belief in God. So we dont need religion shoved down our throats and espescially young minds.
7. #1 - Aussie fool
observer   (02.03.11)
regurgitating propaganda he's seen in the media. No other way to describe that rant. Maybe you should come to Israel and see for yourself what is really going on? Or is that just too much of a culture shock. Rather stay home in Oz and eat some humus and pita falafel once a week to show solidarity with the 'homeland' huh? You idiot.
8. Newsflash: Torah, Talmud, Targumim & DSS are literature
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (02.03.11)
Modern Israeli poets, etc. are mostly a wildly overblown flash in the pan who won't be read a century from now, much less several millennia. It is the "cultured" elitists who are illiterate. Paqid Yirmeyahu Paqid 16, The Netzarim, Ra'anana, Israel Israeli Torah-reverer & Orthodox Jew: Teimani, Baladi, Dor Dai Advocate for Logic as Hermeneutic Halakhic Authority Welcoming all who choose to keep Torah (When questions to me go unanswered, they have refused to post it. Find our reply in our Web Café at www.netzarim.co.il)
9. Close religious societies do this. What is the question?
Josh   (02.03.11)
Do you think the amish study mainstream america books when they think machines are not good?
10. As a student 40 years ago
Babishka ,   USA/Mea Shearim   (02.03.11)
I was required to read some stories from a very famous Israeli author (whose name escapes me now) as example of "classic" Israeli literature. One story that I remember in particular was about a boy and a girl who lived in a remote moshav and never had any fun or excitement. So they decided that if they would blow up the train that stopped at the moshav, they would have fun! and excitement! And while the train was burning, they had sex. This is supposed to be a metaphor of some kind, but really. It totally sucked. Does anyone else remember this story and who is the author?
11. "Israeli Thinking" ?
Moti ,   United States   (02.03.11)
Ynet needs to work on its translation of idioms. "Israeli Thinking"? As in, Mahshevet Yisrael/מחשבת ישראל? That should be translated as "Jewish Philosophy". Then we might actually understand the article.
12.  #6 People have a choice, you say
(02.03.11)
so we don't need the non-religious education minister throwing garbage from some atheists on these young Jewish souls and corrupt their minds with stupidities. Or is it only a one way system, typical of leftists' democracy?
13. RELIGIOUS VENTING THEIR STEAM, #1
Michael   (02.04.11)
One after another the dossim here are venting their worthless steam. Accept it, it won't help. Israel is and will remain a secular State by the choice by the majority of its citizens who are still tolerating the teaching of Tanah to their school children. This they do to show respect to the Jewish tradition while it really is a waste of time. The success of Israeli industry and the country's progress is based on secular education. Secular education is the mainstay of Israel's survival. In contrast, the Tanah study is irrelevant to Israel's existence as a modern State. Don't worry, my Aussie friend, early Zionists are happy with the secular part of education in Israel. However, they are unhappy in their graves with the skimpy budgets allotted for education.
14. Alt. Headline: Religious Jews forced to study Left wing Lit.
adam eliyahu   (02.04.11)
I find it hypocritical that the secular feel the religious MUST learn their literature yet the secular refuse to learn real Hebrew/Jewish classics. I think the secular high school students should be required to have a knowledge base of their own heritage and history. Also, are the arab schools being forced to learn these "classics"?
15. #13:Israel is no longer a secular majority
adam eliyahu   (02.04.11)
Stop spouting Secular Zionist rhetoric. Israel is now a religious majority, majority right wing, majority against land for peace, and a higher percentage of Tel Aviv high school students avoid army service than do charedi. Most of the combat troops are religious. Secular Zionism has lost its relevance and its way.
16. Adam , 15 . Give NUMBERS please
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (02.05.11)

17. 8 , we don't need 3000 years old "leterature"
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (02.05.11)
It are ONLY the History books of the Jewish people , not yours then , the self proclaimed convert and paqid .
18. 17 Charles de Gaulle said WE....
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (02.06.11)
when he meant "I". A great deal of Jewish society don t agree with you. In non Jewish big universities,to be accepted in many faculties ,old litterature,Latin and Greek, is a MUST. No answer needed.
19. 18 , indeed , no answer needed to an
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (02.06.11)

20. 19 I did not intend to insult you,sorry.
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (02.06.11)
