1. Assad:"The more of a Nazi you are the safer you are"
David   (01.31.11)
is what he means
2. Assad is worried.
JJ ,   USA   (01.31.11)
Maybe the dictator is next!
3. Oh those lucky Syrians!
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (01.31.11)
Yup, with an average monthly salary of $420 they are light years ahead of those miserable Egyptians! I mean, really, those Syrians are just so happy with their beloved dicta... sorry, leader Assad-the-son. Those tens of thousands of political prisoners in Syrian jails are lucky too. If they had been Egyptian, they might have been among the hundreds of prisoners apparently killed in the past few days. Ah yes, the glorious benevolent wonderfullness of living in Syria!
4. Let me translte that for you,
Salma ,   Palestine   (01.31.11)
"I'm Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will not do anything to regain the Golan Heights, peace with "Israel" means that I should go back to my home , I will not go back home." the end
5. hmm, dictator jr should learn a lesson from egypt
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (01.31.11)
but i'm sure it's hard for baby assad to think clearly from the blood rushing to his head while bending over and grabbing his ankles to his iranian masters.
6. His country is failing like North Korea
Ilan ,   Ariel   (01.31.11)
The NYTimes has had some articles about the complete disintegration of Syria's economic base. His country lives on handouts and remissions from workers who have migrated abroad. They have no resources to speak of and drought has emptied out the countryside. Sure the people don't protest, but not unlike North Korea that has to do with the level of oppression. The paradox is that Egypt was run much more in sync for the needs of the people and has been a more open society. The people there deserve better than Mubarak, but he was never a small time megalomaniac like Assad.
7. Salma (#4) I agree with you except for...
Potash Katiftof ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (01.31.11)
the last words "The End" This is for sure not the end of Assad's rhetoric.
8. "It's all Lieberman's fault."
Jules   (01.31.11)
Well, it was so nice before Netanyahu-Lieberman's government: all bloody dictatorships surrounding Israel felt very nice, accurately diverting their people's frustration towards "horrible Zionists". Now, when the current Israel's government finally showed some teeth, the rotten Arabic regimes began to fold, one after another. G-d bless Israel.
9. What Assad really said ....
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (01.31.11)
My army will fire on un-armed civilians & kill as many as necessary to put down a revolt & the Syrian people know this. I can do what I want because Western politicians & the media are clueless morons & wimp appeasers. The only people who worry about Obama are America's allies, so I feel safe. I'm the best liar in the Middle-East.
10. YEAH! Any leader (or anyone) bad
Israeli 2   (01.31.11)
mouthing Israel will meet his demise. I have seen it over and over again. They just never seem to learn.
11. Clearly the conclusion of lucid thought
Sagi   (01.31.11)
Aggression towards Israel ensures stability at home. Denying the right of Israel to exist will feed hungry mouths. Mubarak brought about this revolution because of his attitude to Israel. Thank you Mr. Assad for making this so clear. I would like to point out just one small detail of history. From 1789 till 1793 quite a few Frenchmen lost their heads. Was that something to do with peace treaties and normal relations ? I trust you are interested in keeping your head placed upon your shoulders.
12. Syria is next in line
Joe   (01.31.11)
according to Rabbi Nir Ben-Arzi on radio Kol Hai
13. #7 Potash , I meant the end of translation ; )
Salma ,   Palestine   (01.31.11)
any way, You will not find in "Israel" what's better than al-Assad's regime .
14. Assad says better off than Mubarak
Rina ,   Haifa, Israel   (01.31.11)
let's wait to the Fabruary and than we will see a mr. Assad as good prepaired as he said.
15. #4 let me translate
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (01.31.11)
Thanks to the fool Obama, I have regained control of Lebanon and been declared innocent of murdering Hariri. My arch-enemy, the Sunni dictatorship Saudi Arabia who think that Alawi are sub-human, will no longer be able to hurt me. My Iranian friends have neutralized the Turkish threat from the north and brokered a peace deal between us. I won't have any riots because Iran won't incite them, and the Shiite, Druze and Alawis support me against the Sunni . The only thing I have to do is let my Iranian friends keep Hezbollah armed in Lebanon, which is really good because I can threaten Israel with no risk to myself. As for the Golan and Kinneret? Eventually some Olmert in Israel or Obama in the US will give it to me in exchange for nothing.
16. its indeed outrageous, when he with erdogan and olmert...
eporue ,   europe   (01.31.11)
were talking about an syrian agreement, and two days later israel attacked gaza... and with the mubarak stance at israel, which did harm him, its also correct, imo: its not about "we must hate israel", but its about a clear and peaceful commitment with a neighbouring state, which the people must understand. mubarak did something quite different from that. all assad says is plausible. maybe its important to understand that between "love" and "hate" is a wide range of emotions - which is perfect for a neighbouring friendly relation.
17. 40,000 skeletons in Hama beg to differ!
Nour ,   One-State   (01.31.11)
On Feb. 5, Assad will have to deal with the Syrian youth who have just about had it with mass corruption, non-representation, and lack of respect for the citizen. Tunisia lesson here we come to Damascus!
18. Assad and his venom
Brod ,   USA   (01.31.11)
Assad is singing the theme song of the fanatical Islamist-Jihadist Muslim Brotherhood-father of all Islamist-Jihadist terrorists. The Muslim Brotherhood thrives in its cesspool that calls for the destruction of Israel and hatred for Jews. These dark forces pose a great danger to Israel, the region, America, the West, and the world. They are Anti-America, Anti-West , Anti-Kuffar, and Anti-Christian. Their ultimate goal is to subdue, dominate and islamize the whole non-Islamist world. This is the very reason why Mubarak and the Egyptian Army must triumph over the protesters led, financed and incited by the Muslim Brotherhood and the latent hands of the Ayatollahists. Those who think that the protesters are dreaming for freedom and democracy do not know what they are talking about. Their aim is to oust Mubarak so that they can have a theocratic government led by the fanatical Islamist-Jihadist Muslim Brotherhood.
19. Saddam Hussein was also invinsible
Eugen ,   London England   (01.31.11)
-well so he thought...
20. He is Right & Wrong
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (01.31.11)
I definitely agree with assessment that his open hostility towards Israel helps him with his people. When Assad talks about leaders differing from the people they rule, he means the "Arab Street". I've talked about it countless times. Those governments friendly with the U.S. or have a cold peace with Israel, always walked that tight rope, that balancing act between the "Arab Street" which hates Israel and the U.S., and their leadership of the country. But Olmert did not deceive him in the peace process, because talking about the Golan with Assad, has nothing to do with Gaza. Israel had to stop the endless rocket attacks against its civilians. The agreement about Golan would do nothing about that. Assad himself agrees the Arabs in the disputed territories are not ready for a peace process because they are divided. The Golan BTW should never be returned to Syria, at least for the next 20-30 years, and only after Syria proves beyond a shadow of doubt their true intentions. Which frankly means they will never get the Golan back.
21. Yes we can! completely destablize the Middle East!
(01.31.11)
Obama this is going to blow up in your back yard! Total destablization of the middle east isn't good for anyone...not the arabs, not the jews and not the world! This is going to get far worse b4 it gets better! I'm just saying
22. #9 Is 100% Correct
leo ,   nyc   (01.31.11)
Assad is in power because Syrians know he has no hesitation about turning machine guns on them--and that is what the "Arab Street" respects...all the calls for free elections will lead straight to the takeover by radicals Islamofascists How stupid of the West to think that the radicals care about Western support...
23. Tipical Arabic mind
Ralph ,   Caesarea   (01.31.11)
hurt by peace!!!!!
24. And Assad is left wing???
JO   (01.31.11)
Egypt has only one thing in common with Israel - a non desire for war, and want of stability. Other than that Mabbarak has no love for Israel. Syrian President is just using the situation to look good. He has plenty problems at home and one way you side tract an issue is use Israel. Egypt and Israel have no illusions about the common interest, peace and stability. Egypt have never been Israel's friend...... Assad should look to his own right wing politics, Israel will worry about one minister, just one, who shoots his mouth in the food and has plenty dissenters in parliment but that is democracy. Say out loud stupid things.
25. #4 Salami - Let me explain
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (01.31.11)
what you left out in your faulty translation Assad is saying that he wants the Golan so he can use it in the next war as a launching point for his attacks on Israel All you realy have to do is visit the Golan and see all the destroyed Syrian tanks and bunkers from previous wars NEVER AGAIN !!
26. Without the peace accord with Israel, Egypt
Yaawqove ,   Israel   (01.31.11)
would be without self sufficiency in oil and gas, as Israel keep the Sinia it captured when destroying Nasser's forces in 1967 and Sadats forces in 1973. Egypt also would not hagve recieved the 1.5 billion x30 years that the US has given it since then. Thats a cushy 45 billion from that alone. Not to mention half the toruism industry since the Sinai would remian with Israel. Asad should go back to being an eye doctor and check his vision, he doesnt know jack. Shave that moustache too man, unless you can grow a real one.
27. Read between the lines....
Mark ,   Lodz, Poland   (01.31.11)
''....Syria is stable. Because you have to be very closely linked to the beliefs of the people. This is the core issue. What he's saying is that his Syrian ''Muhabarat" (secret police) have every citizen kakking themselves from fear......nothing more.
28. He is safer because of Hama massacre
John Gillis   (01.31.11)
Maybe he feels safer because of what his father did at Hama Syria to the Muslim Brotherhood many years ago. When the majority Sunnis rose up against the Alawite (Shiite) ruling minority, they had the city of Hama sealed off and got the military to slaughter them all to contain and destroy them. He supports the Muslim Brotherhood in Gaza (Hamas) and Egypt but not in Syria because it is a danger to him. Those that survive in the Middle East are the ones who destroy their enemy completely while the can and as soon as they can or else the enemy grows and lives another day to fight and maybe eventually win later on.
29. Translation: Block Facebook, Kill your rivals in their sleep
Yaawqove ,   Israel   (01.31.11)
Block twitter, monitor all websites, scare the shyt out of your population and youll be fine." Look at me, Im bashar assad and I need north koreas help to make weapons. My countries median income is less than 5000 bucks a year, and there is no freedom. No wonder he cant ever be in public....the alawites have shored up power but they are still less than 1% of syrian population...his day will come.
30. #20 Mark in Bulldog country
Yaawqove ,   Israel   (01.31.11)
Yes mubarak and western connected gov.'s in arab world have an arab street opposed to the west. But the fault lies with them! they have absolute power in their unabashedly non democratic regimes (just like islamist regimes) to intervene in education and media . the street is the way it is solely by education and media. change those things and over time you change the street
