1. Strange
Jarda ,   Czech Republic   (02.01.11)
Do you thing that Israel would come into existence without such mistake? Do you thing that any one would even think about existence of Israel if Palestine would be governed by people of Palestine and not by British occupation?
2. How Thick Can One Get ?
Yisrael ,   Jerusalem, ISRAEL   (02.01.11)
Sure....so like Iran and Turkey both stayed our friends because it was in their economic interests. And if the Arabs in Yesha see their economy improve, OF COURSE they will not hate us and seek our destruction ! How naive can one get ? Wake up, man !! Ideology trumps economy; always did, always will !
3. Only Pyramids & Region Native Peoples Will Remain Forever .
Salma ,   Palestine   (02.01.11)
the rule in our region is : who came as a stranger, will leave as a stranger. people of Egypt, who will determine Egypt's future and interests, not you Mr.Avi Trengo !

Palestinain ,   West Bank   (02.01.11)
Should never quit communicating and a compromise is sometimes needed. Didn't we all have enough!
8. peaceful egyptian revolution
Carlos ,   Salamanca, SPAIN   (02.01.11)
Hello, I am very tired of your conflict with palestinians. My ideas are clear, but I can not understand your attitudes. (The attitudes of your government). Have can you say that Obama is juvenile? That he has left Egypt in isolation? I was pro Israel when I was a child, I have cried a lot with Holocaust films, but you cannot live like victims. We all know that you and Hamas are to blame by Libano's destruction. I will say it once more clearly. You have the right to leave in peace with your neighbors, the right to solve the problem without interferences, ...Illegal settlements have no sense and for me the only way to solve it is with a national agreement among the biggest parties. Above the ideas of your extremist religious parties is the State of Israel. To finish I will say something that could be a bit hard. You are wasting the memory of the Holocaust. It is very sad to me. I am not pro Palestians or pro Hamas. I try to be fair in my judges.
9. carlos - this is a childish response
antihypocrites   (02.01.11)
but - honestly - do you think you have enough understanding or even moral ground to judge any israeli/ -crying in holocaust movies is not a sufficient disclaimer - it only shows youre human. and now to childish response; solve your catalan and basque occupations before you preach to us about our tiny country. the conflict started way before any "settlements" were constructed - those are just a red herring - used by haters of israel and naive people like you.
10. Don't count on pyramids lasting forever
R ,   Israel   (02.01.11)
Ten years ago, the taliban demolished the beautiful stone budda statues at Bamian. Since the Egyptian pyramids predate Islam by thousands of year, if Al Kaida gets control in Egypt, and that eventually could happen, even the pyramids would no longer be safe. Aside from that, interesting article.
11. #3: Then leave, squatter!
Israeli ,   Israel   (02.01.11)
The only people indigenous to Judea are the Jews.
12. Peace because of economic interests?
(02.01.11)
Dont make me laugh. Hitlers biggest trading partner right up until June 1941 was the Soviet Union. You are dealing with fanatics, the economy doesnt matter to them.
13. The slide into war!
ג'ון הנביא   (02.01.11)
All these years spent shrinking in size while trying to make peace with those who want you dead. Pathetic! Allowing the "peace now" crowd to hold sway for so many years while the "Greater Israel" crowd cowered away. Pathetic! Well, the chickens are now coming home to roost. Israel, harden your heart and prepare for the fight of your lives, because, this is now unavoidable. The Islamic tsunami is growing and heading straight for Israel. Who will stop it? Israel, you are becoming a small sand bar in a raging sea of Islam. Greater Israel should now be your goal. Carve out a large country and arm to the teeth before it's too late. Failure to do this means the end.
14. #1 and #3
Sol ,   Canada   (02.01.11)
"Who came as a stranger will leave as a stranger" is correct. That is why the Jewish people have returned to OUR land and why during the so called Naqba your people fled - most having been recent arrivals from neighboring lands there for purely economic reasons. That is why the Jewish people prosper in OUR land and seek peace while yours universally fail to do so throughout the region. That is why it is the historic destiny of Israel to be a democratic Jewish state respecting and encouraging all of its diverse citizens to prosper and fulfill their dreams. It must drive you crazy to see Arab citizens of Israel fully engaged in its economic, social and political life. That is why the Jewish citizens of Israel have never supported hate for their Muslim fellow citizens and have never advocated the kind of massacres and bloodletting even your "moderates" want to visit on the Jewish people - which fortunately they never will have the ability to complete. Only when the Arab peoples accept tinny Israel and the true justice of its existence will they have any chance of a meaningful existence of their own. Your leaders have built and used a hate machine directed at us to justify their dictatorial repression and control over you. People like Salma have internalized that control mechanism to the point of self righteous blindness. They have become true thought lackeys.
15. Egypt: Interest in peace?
graczek ,   Maryland, USA   (02.01.11)
Perhaps so, if mere economics are taken into consideration; there is trade between Egypt and Israel, some quite lucrative. But this cannot last, because we are at the moment of truth and Divine principle must always take precedence over self-interest; and peace with Israel for economic gain defies Divine principle. We are at the moment of truth; principle must transcend self-seeking pragmatism, and this morally questionable peace Egypt granted to Israel must be abrogated to restore Divine justice to the Middle East.
16. #11 Judea ? Where's Judea ?!
Salma ,   Palestine   (02.01.11)
any way I'm not in Judea to leave it, I'm in Palestine : )
17. Support to left wing instead of dictature
Ari Rusila ,   Jyvaskyla, Finland   (02.01.11)
As I understand PM Netanyahu is supporting Mubarak based on fear that his regime will be replaced with Islamist regime. However so far the driving force behind the demonstrations in Egypt has been a mixture of example in Tunis, lack of democracy combined to supremacy of corruption and social inequality, unemployment/poverty and other obvious social evils. Egyptian grassroots political activists, many of them representing socialist or trade unionist are demanding to raise minimum wages and to get an unemployment aid. Other demands include cancelling the emergency status, releasing detainees, resignation of the President and having free elections. So today there is more democratic left wing demands without any elements of radical Islam. In my opinion there is three possible scenarios available depending which side the army takes: Firstly Mubarak can stay in power with army support, second secular demonstrators can step towards democracy if army takes neutral position and thirdly the Muslim Brotherhood can transform Egypt to Islamic republic. But as said all depends now about army and in the course of time how coherent secular opposition can work. In this situation I think that all support also from Israel should be given to these secular left wing elements and for more democratic society.
18. Carlos #8
Ehoop ,   UK   (02.01.11)
Carlos. There are clear rights and wrongs in this matter. Israel does not only have the right to live in peace with its neighbours, Israel has consistently tried to do that, and its Arab neighbours have refused to do so and have launched wars of extermination against the Jewish state and attempted to strangle it by cutting-off its trade routes. Hezbollah and Hamas still threaten to annihilate Jews, not only those in Israel, while Iran, which influences them and is building nuclear weapons, threatens to obliterate the Jewish state and denies the Holocaust, whose memory you respect. The PLO, domestically, maintains the aim of destroying Israel and runs away from every opportunity to make peace. Since signing peace treaties with Israel, Egypt's and Jordan's versions of peace have been very much "behind the scenes" and anything but warm. There is nothing illegal about Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Israel has the best title to the territory since it captured it from illegal occupation by Jordan and since the land was, in any case, intended for Jewish settlement through the terms of the League of Nations' Mandate for Palestine, whose terms the United Nations accepted at its founding, along with those of all other Mandates. UN 242 clearly states that the determination of sovereignty over the area will be arrived at through negotiation. And, finally, no Israeli government has transferred its inhabitants into the area. So right is on Israel's side. Public opinion in your country and in mine is, as I'm sure you will agree, not on Israel's side. But that is because it has bought into the Palestinians' false narrative on emotional grounds and has been influenced over the years by anti-semitism and, more recently, the anti-capitalism and anti-Americanism of the Left.

From the Koran: Jew mentioned 23 times Israel mentioned 44 times the Jew Musa mentioned 143 times the Jew Yusuf mentioned 29 times the Jew Dawood mentioned 16 times the Jewess Marium mentioned 35 times the Jew Isa mentioned 27 times Palestine (name used by European invaders for Israel) 0 times any more questions?

21. Alfred E. Neuman - What, me worry?
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (02.01.11)
We have lots of students of the great American Leftist philosopher, Alfred E. Neuman, here in Israel. They have studied his philosophy as found in MAD Magazine, adapting it to their profound study of Marx - that's Groucho Marx, of course. So I suppose that the wars of 1948, 1967, 1973 - the Egyptians attacked us because they didn't have Mr Tragano around to explain their interests to them. Now, we'll send Mr Tragano to the Muslim Brotherhood to explain things to them. He'll bring them his new MAD magazine so that they'll find enlightenment & give up Jihad.
22. something overlooked
Habib Seliman ,   New York, USA   (02.01.11)
Messieurs Jarda, Salma et Carlos, You are all entitled to your opinions but they do not change the facts. That is that most of us, the majority - the Jews have come from the Middle East and North Africa to return to Israel. Just like you Mr. Salma we spoke Arabic at home. Our brothers and sisters from Europe either came because of the 'nice treatment' they received from some of the European governments or for their desire to return home. And yes I also cry when I read the accounts of our people from the Holocaust and Inquisition and even when I see the 'beautiful' works of art from the Spanish master painters depicting the mass slaughter of the indigenous when they landed in South American continent. My best wishes for the people of Egypt . I hope that one day the Europeans and North Americans will recognize the the Kurdish struggle and be granted their freedom from suffering they continue to endure from Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria. Do not overlook the facts.
23. Israel and the World
Moshe ,   NYC, USA   (02.01.11)
Some of these OP-ED opinions make sense; others are just inane. Truly lasting relationships between states are on the non-governmental level. The ties between the US and Israel don't depend upon how the Pres. of the US and the PM of Israel get along; they depend upon the myriad contacts between the two societies. Every time Israelis talk about "pulling up the moat" and retrenching, I want to grab them by their collars and shake some sense into them. The American people are the best friends the Jewish people have had in our entire history these last three thousand years. It is truly a miracle and beyond comprehension that this could have developed in the last fifty years. Anyone who thinks the Israeli people will ever have the same sort of ties with the Chinese or Indian people, is delusional!

25. goodbye peace
Albert Camus ,   Amsterdam,   (02.01.11)
No worries, mate. Peace will Egypt will persevere. Why? Because Avi says so. I prefer to look at the relevant data on the opinions of the Egyptian people. According to Pew Research center, 82% favour stoning for adultery, 77% favour whippings/chopping off of hands for theft, 85 % favour the death centence for apostasy and 85% favour a big role for the Islam in politics,. goodbye peace.
26. look how well it worked in Gaza

so what ur say'n is you r in Jordan. very good stay there.
29. To: No. 8
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.01.11)
The settlements are not illegal. Judea and Samaria are non-sovereign territory, acquired by Israel in the course of fighting a defensive war. Israel is free to settle, and even to annex it, and which point in time its Arab residents will be repatriated to Jordan, country of their citizenship.
30. Jihadi dogma doesn't consider economic interests.
Chaim ,   Israel   (02.01.11)
Trengo is a sorry excuse for a journalist if he doesn't realize that not everyone has the same motivations. It is true that Egypt's economic interests are to live in peace with Israel. In fact, the economic interests of the Arab World, from the start, has been peace with Israel. Iran's economic interest is to stop building nuclear bombs and improve it's cesspool of an economy. So what? Jihadist dogma doesn't consider economic interests. Nor do tyrants. Jihadist tyrants least of all. The Egyptian revolution is lead by jihadist tyrants.
