I remember "the real Egypt" that took off their shoes so they could run faster from the mighty IDF during the takeover of the Sinai in 1967. They were then; they are now, MIGHTY IDF! Shabbat Shalom,
34. The New Middle East
Al ,   Lebanon   (02.11.11)
The Day has come, Egypt will go back to it is leading and original position supporting and promoting the Lebanese and Palstianina resistance against Israel. Israel has lost today it is biggest ally in the Middle East. Jordan and other arab states are on the verge of change. Lebanon’s Government is now Pro-resistance, Turkey is Pro-resistance. Welcome to the new Middle East, the era of change & fairness inshallah
35. Gunfire.....
Shalom ,   U.S.A.   (02.11.11)
Celebration with gunfire is a sure sign of democratic changes? I wonder if #1 islamist leader will join in this type of celebration?
36. Iranian Revolution all over again
Brod ,   USA   (02.11.11)
This time it is in Egypt. Naive Leftist Western media would think that this is a victory for Jeffersonian democracy, freedom and liberty. Where will they be when they find the fanatical Islamist-Jihadist Muslim Brotherhood takes over Egypt? The Leftist media and the innocent Egyptian youth would be gasping for air when it happens. Unless the Army takes strong military rule of Egypt, it is just a matter of time before the Muslim Brotherhood-the Mother of all Islamist-Jihadist fanatics and terrorism takes control of the country. And Obama, if he does not know yet, will be peeing on his pants.

38. The Pharaoh is gone, now what ?
jo   (02.11.11)
To bad Mubarak didn't quit in the begining. He would have been an honored leader yielding to the desire of the people for change, Now, weeks later and 3 to 600 deaths and thousands wounded, he was 'forced' to resign, a pariah. Today he is a former dictator with blood on his hands, a criminal responsible for ALL the casualties inflicted on his " beloved" brothers. And where are the Billions $- The Swiss govt his freesing all his assets - more to come.

Well said! But I doubt that this is written in any history books in Israel.
41. And Former President Putin will live in Sharm El Sheik
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (02.11.11)
Telling Mr. Mededev Through the Egyptian Army.....How to run Egypt. Military guy Mubarak....surrounded by 1000 military guards.....allows the Army to take over......while guarding him. So now Mubarak tells the Military.....behind the scenes like Putin.....to forward his orders to the Vice President whom he has given a new title too. Mubarak is now just a minister living in a palace in one of the best diving and vacationing spots in the Middle East. But he isn't running the show anymore. I love Russian History. Good for you Mubarak. The duped Western News Media really believes this guy stepped down from power. Smucks.
42. Some changes coming but military will control the speed
Bloodyscot ,   Dallas, Texas   (02.11.11)
While there will be a change in leadership with elections, most the changes the military will allow are likely economical, in some ways like China.
43. #8: Wishful thinking.
Michael Steiner ,   Bahrain   (02.11.11)
When the Arab world becomes democratic, you people are screwed, because the attention of the Moroccans, Saudis, Jordanians, Iranians, etc. will be on their own lives, not yours. The despots from Morocco to Mindanao have been using the Palestinian "cause" for decades to deflect their people's attention away from the corruption, poverty and oppression in their own countries, by creating this supposed behemoth of an enemy - Israel. That strategy in now unravelling. If I was you, I would intensify my battle--particularly in the diplomatic arena--NOW while there is still time. Otherwise, when attention even in the Arab world shifts away from you, jackasses like Netanyahu will be able to do whatever they want, and nobody will give a damn. I hope the Palestinian people throw off the yoke of occupation in the West Bank soon, too.
44. #36: Grow up.
Michael Steiner ,   Bahrain   (02.11.11)
Yes, what comes after Mubarak may be even worse, but that is no excuse to perpetuate and prop up oppression, despotism and corruption. America didn't know what would follow its revolution. Neither did the French when they overthrew their despicable monarchy. Nor did the "East" Germans. Every society needs to go through the process of maturing. Sometimes that period is arduous and protracted, as in the case of so many African states. I hope the Egyptian people's process of "growing up" is quick and painless. Your argument that Mubarak's rule was salutary because some of the possible alternatives is depressing and history has debunked it, not least of all in our (Jewish and Zionist) own case.

47. Hardly a big change-look who is taking over.
JO   (02.11.11)
He was old and was bound to leave sooner or later, either by death or ill health or just a timely rational decision to dignity to mark his own end. This way was unexpected but it is hardly a celebration. The people who lead the government now are the same people. Celebrate after new elections and see if the new people can bring peace , security, jobs, health, welfare, medicine and prosperity to Egypt., If they bring war, then what is to celebrate but death and suffering, if they really do bring prosperity and a better Egypt, then that indeed be something worth celebrating. Right now is just the beginning of a whole lot of problems to solve, Egypt is a mess. Egypt, pardon me, never had a honeymoon and for #1, the real people of Egypt don't care about Israel, they CARE about their own lives.
48. Bad news...
marlene ,   Philadelphia, USA   (02.11.11)
KNOW THAT only 20%-25% of the "masses" supported the revolution. Keep that in mind when you hear the word "democracy." The "ecstatic masses" could fit on the head of a pin - in Cairo square. "Evil wins when good people do nothing." Next? Russia enters the picture and the End Days unfold...
49. # 31 Tokyo Rose [eaglet syriannas]
Hal ,   Usa   (02.11.11)
Wipe the drool from your deluded grin good friend. Todays good news for you will be shortlived. You dance today as the Egyptian people found their voice and courage to peacefully protest their desire to be governed by those they choose freely and fairly. They are not interested in continuing the past. This idea is taking hold among the young educated and media connected generation. Politics as usual are in for a surprise. You will no doubt not be dancing when the same types in Syria as well as in other oppressive Arab regimes catch the fever to be free and have some control over their own lives. Are you worried like your Patron Ahmadinejad? Do you have bad thoughts about where you fit in with the future? Simply, you leave this blogsite. Best regards, my good friend! I really enjoy this day, yippy skippy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Egypt did not use its large stock of Al-Kaher and Al-Zafer rockets which the Israeli intelligence tried to stop its project in the 60s by targeting the German experts sharing to develop them. in 73, many were used only to strike 31 strong posts on the eastern line of the Suez Canal. that would have been looking illogical in the eyes of Israelis, but that did happen. Had Egypt used the stock of rockets in its arsenal to strike the Israeli home front; Israel would have come to its knees.
53. # 37 Sam, I admire you.
Jules   (02.12.11)
You can foresee the future, that's true; but by 50% only. Because if Netanyahu steps down (don't worry, it won't be too soon), Lieberman will be the next PM. That's your aspiration, as far as I understand.
54. To 22 and 40 it seems you have forgotten about line 101
The Dude   (02.12.11)
Let me give you a history refesher. At the end of the Yom Kippur war where a combined strike by Egypt, Syria, and many other Arab and Islamic countries failed to achieve there primary goal of destroying Israel. The IDF reversed it's loses and the IDF finished it's fighting at line 101 in Egypt... but what is line 101? That was distance the IDF stopped from Cairo, 101 km away. An hours drive, and a few kilometers short of heavy artillery range. So what stopped Israel from reaching Tahrir square? It was the mighty... Soviet Union, not the Egyptian Army, not the Syrian army, and not any Arab or Islamic force. It was the USSR, after the Egyptian defeat and the 3rd army (division in American terminology) encirclement by Ariel Sharon and the crossing of the Suez canal, the USSR was in shock. It had to save face of it's scion Egypt at the time due to the defeat and underwhelming performance of the Egyptian military with superior state of readiness, numbers, and armaments (which was all Soviet based). This lead to the USSR threatening nuclear assault on Israel and western allies if the IDF did not stop. The US literally went to Defcon 3 equivalent to the state of readiness it went to in at least in the latter part of the Cuban Missile Crisis and on 9/11. This combined US and USSR pressure led Israel to stop it's advancement, and saved Egypt. Also don't forget that Egypt was repulsed when it was fighting hand in hand with Syria and other Arab neighbors and was STILL REPULSED. The Yom Kippur war was literally like ganging up with multiple friends and attacking a sleeping person, getting a few good punches, then getting knocked unconscious and only being saved by a very large Russian friend. Learn from history... war with Israel is not a worthwhile endeavor. And here is another lesson, don't celebrate your victories when you haven't entered a war. Nasser and Sadat learned that lesson the hard way.

56. The Middle East after US leaves.
David Turner ,   richmond   (02.12.11)
It appears Obama’s pressure finally worked, but at what cost? Mubarak is out, the protesters are as disorganized as always, and the only two parties standing capable of running a government are the army, which means a continuing autocracy, and the Muslim Brotherhood, which means the largest and most powerful Arab country goes theocracy. Good crisis management! As regards America’s standing in the Muslim world Iran has long held the US in contempt for its failures of management of the war (Iran funded, armed and led the resistance to the “occupation”); and now the rest of the region, if not the entire world, is aware that alliance with the United States is as firm as a dune in a sandstorm. Saudi King Abdullah, “chastised the president for his treatment of Egypt and its president Hosni Mubarak calling it a disaster that would generate instability in the region and imperil all the moderate Arab rulers and regimes which had backed the United States until now… the Saudi royal family would bend all its resources to undoing Washington’s plans for Egypt and nullifying their consequences.” This has certainly been a banner decade for America’s position in the region. Bush turned Iraq from anti- to pro-Iran by creating the Shiite “democracy”; turned Gaza over to Hamas after forcing Abbas to permit that party’s place in elections, then promoting a coup against the democratically-elected Hamas government. And now the current White House incumbent topped off the slide in American prestige by changing horses multiple times in the struggle between Egypt’s regime and the street. Let’s look in our crystal ball at the future. With Turkey already adrift and the “moderate” monarchies close behind, the US is history. But what then? Well, there is theocratic Iran exporting its brand of anti-Americanism. And who supplies and supports Iran? Well, in the 1960′s the US opposed Soviet influence in the region (assisted by Israel). Russia is behind Iran, and that country will inherit.

Talkbacks, many feel this means a war with Israel and are elated about it. Don't be!! If you think abrogating the treaty with Israel is a good thing, it proves my point and others as well. You can't trust an Arab to honor a treaty, after all it's just a piece of paper. You must be able to pass agreements from one leader to the next, in a peaceful transition of power. Otherwise you can't have a treaty. It would seem, some Arabs and other Muslims believe they don't have to honor the treaty anymore. That is what this was about? I thought we were talking about more freedom for the Egyptian people, not the oppression or destruction of the Jewish people? I've always had my doubts as to, what the real intention of the protesters were anyway. They talked about Democracy, but that was probably BS (for the Western Media), what they will have (more than likely) a more repressive theocracy. So enjoy your celebrating, Hezbollah and groups like them are all ready jumping in the streets with joy, why is that? They will hijack your so called Democratic movement, welcome to the new Iran. Their people just rioted too! What happened to them? The world did nothing, so Mubarak didn't kill his people in the streets, as did Iran. Iran is celebrating also, you suckers did what they couldn't, beat Egypt. Your just to stupid to know it yet.
