Now we got 3 imbeciles admitting total failure in their multyculturalism --- France, Germany, England. On the list and due shortly, are Spain, Italy, Belgium, Portugal. Then the 'avalanche'
2. Can the unnamed author please provide some proof?
Bryan ,   Minneapolis -- USA   (02.11.11)
I find it hard to believe that practicing Catholics and Jews are upset about the Prime Minister talking about the positive role of faith in civil society, I can't comment on how most Muslims feel, but regardless, where's some proof? This seems like a lie, wouldn't observant people agree?

4. Typical French defeatist attitude
Derick ,   Toronto, Canada   (02.11.11)
How does that old French saying go? Oh, right - "If at first you don't succeed, just give up so (they won't bomb Paris)." France has never really tried multiculturalism, and in the few places in the world were it really has been tried (like Canada) it's only been around for about 1 generation. Social change usually takes longer than 1 generation. So before declaring multiculturalism a failure, how about 1) actually trying it, and 2) trying to fix the parts that aren't working instead of just giving up. Sarkozy - what a flip-flopping loser...
5. Is it about headscarves?
Neil101 ,   United States   (02.11.11)
We need an discussion to understand this. What are his defending arguments? What is the definition of multi-culturalism, isn't another word for it freedom? Is it just about head scarves or is it about intolerance towards people different from the status quo?
6. #4 - but the question is....did Canada force integration?
William ,   Israel   (02.11.11)
If yes, then you have a working multiculturalism. France didnot which is why it didn't work well. As Sarkozy said, they worried more about the identity and feelings of the immigrants than the hosts, and now pockets of Africans and Muslims, living in their own world, yet in France, exists. By the way, they did "give up so they won't bomb Paris" back in the 1980s and indeed, the African Muslims did bomb Paris!
7. #5 - Neil, don't you have a liberal professor to suck up to?
William ,   Israel   (02.11.11)
Have you even looked into the issue in France before making an opinion? France is staunchly secular and considers headscarves to be both demeaning to women (as they are not really part of Islam or required per the Koran) and they force an issue of religion (hence wearing yarmulkes in some public places like schools also banned). Sarkozy's comments are on lack of integration not despising people who are different. The US accepts immigrants all the time and just by its nature forces these new arrivals to integrate into society. Check out areas in NYC, Miami, and LA where pockets of homogeneous immigrant populations exist without integration....they lack services and are dangerous as hell to venture into.
8. Multi Culturelism
Walhe ,   Redding, Ca.   (02.11.11)
France is only now waking up. After riots, burning cars, and turning France into a middle east country. Of course the Muslims use words like Social Justice, Equality, in reply. Trouble is Muslims do not show any Justice of any kind to people who do not believe like they do. Muslims use the freedom and liberty they find in free democracies to advance their own agenda. That agenda is Sharia law which is racist and exclusive of any other people or beliefs. This is called deception. Pretend to be a friend until you have them in an indefensible position then kill them. Lying cheating, stealing, hate mongering. That is Islam!

10. France's Sarkozy: Multiculturalism a failure
SLDB ,   Australia   (02.12.11)
Mr Sarkozy is right. France gave up too much to become a multicultural country but this in turn backed fired at the french own cultural qualities. No wonder I am not too keen in visiting a country I spent my childhood yeras there. Frence should stand firm and make sure that people who do not wish to behave as if they were in the fromer countries. They should go back where they come from. Enough is Enough!

Birds of a feather flock together. East is East and West is West, and ne'er the twain shall meet. These adages are very profound and were meant to be taken seriously. The price for not doing so will be extremely heavy.

16. Did you guys read the article ?
Remi ,   Paris   (02.12.11)
For some fifteen years, we French have been worried and sneering at the concept of "multiculturalism" used in North America and some Western Europe countries, i.e. "communities" living isolated, with their own, sometimes egregious, customs, from their close neighbours and forming pressure groups, competing with other groups, while we prefer the idea of all French people being equal, without attention being brought to religion, race (or that dreadful neologism, "ethnicity"), gender, etc... Now it turns out we were getting it right.
