In order to win the 'Jerusalem Prize' you must be on the political Left. It is best of course if you are not so far to the Left that you call for the destruction of the State. But you must without question believe that the 'wronged party' in the conflict is the Palestinian Arabs and the 'criminal' the Jewish State. So Susan Sontag, Murikami, now Ian MacEwan.
Paul Johnson, Martin Amis, Niall Ferguson, Alan Dershowitz, all are far too pro-Israel to be given the 'Jerusalem Prize' .
PS Does MacEwan have any idea of what happened in Sheik Jarrah during the War of Independence? Or would he feel that the slaughter or unarmed medical personnel was 'justified' as an act of peaceful liberation?
