1. IF THE WEST DID NOT STOP IRAN -
Orao. ,   Srbia.   (02.23.11)
- A MUCH - MUCH - BIGGER THRETH, THEY WONT STOP GADDAFI EITHER. Orao.Srbia.
2. Enlightened?
Devorah   (02.23.11)
What makes you think we live in an "Enlightened World?" We live in a world where people are stupefied and numb by what they see going on. They take their cues from clueless leaders who use obligatory words like "condemn" and "unacceptable," but nothing is done. France wants more sanctions again Libya. What is that going to prove? It is the dark avoidance side of human non-response the world saw in Nazi Germany and in other evil regimes since then. That being said, I do understand your point. One would think we would be more enlightened than we were, but we are the same pathetic mess we have always been. Kudos to you for trying to raise the bar by calling attention to our potential.
3. why they woke up after 40 years? why not before?
Daniela   (02.23.11)
we all knew that Gheddaffi is crazie and they let him rule for so many years!
4. Excellent op-ed
Shalom Hartman   (02.23.11)
5. Why?
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.23.11)
The people who are now begging the West for help are the same people who were quite content to cheer and applaud Ghadafi not all that long ago when he exhorted crowds to join him in his rants, and screamed "Death to America," "Death to the Zionists," "Death to the West," et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseum. They supported him loudly and enthusiastically then. These are the people who rejoiced when several hundred innocent people were blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland. These are the same people who practically celebrate September 11 and July 7 as national holidays. Now they want our help? Why should the West do anything to help them? Because oil -- while still important -- isn't as important as it used to be, and countries in the West, long dependent on Arab oil, have for years been turning to alternative sources of energy, and the impact is now being felt in the oil-producing states? Because this impact has finally ravaged oil production-dependent economies and created high unemployment, raging inflation and shortages? They got the leadership they wanted; they got the leadership they deserve. They loved that leadership while that leadership jerked the West around like puppets on a string. Too bad for them that their beloved leadership never bothered to diversify their economies. Too bad for them that their beloved leadership thought that the dependence on Arab oil would last forever. Very reminiscent of the Germans who adored Hitler (may his name be cursed throughout eternity) while things were going really great for Germany and the Jews and countless other innocents were being killed en masse. Then, once the tide of war had turned and Allied bombers were relentlessly attacking Germany night after night, those same Germans who had turned a blind eye to atrocities being committed by the Nazis sang a very different tune. Well, now the Libyans are singing a very different tune. But it sounds very off-key to me and, frankly, I just cannot bring myself to care all that much about their plight.
6. I agree 100%
Palestinain ,   West Bank   (02.23.11)
Everyone who does not respect the sanctity of the human life must face consequences from the rest of the world. The thing is who will decide who deserves punishment and who does not? Are regimes capable of putting humanity before interests? We, in away, are all guilty of dishonoring our humanity.
7. to nr. 5.
cosmopolitist ,   planet earth   (02.23.11)
we cannot lump an entire people all together, even if only a very small minority is against the government/regime/clique of a country/land/nation/state. for example: all the jews are not zionists. all the "israelis"/jews donot like netanyahu 2, all the americans donot like the us-government etc.
8. To Sarah B
Harris ,   West Palm Beach, USA   (02.23.11)
Yes, I understand your distaste for the hypocrisy and cynicism in the world. How can we as Jews not feel the world's hypocrisy when the building of an addition on a home in the West Bank is condemned, but genocide is largely ignored. Yet, we cannot lose our humanity either, whether the victims are Jews or Arabs or whatever, we are all human, and entitled to fairness and decency.
9. Turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan proves to be a hypocrit
Dan Kelso   (02.23.11)
Not a single word by this Islamist Erdogan about Gaddafi murdering hundreds of his civilians. Erdogan said yesterday he wouldn't give an award back, given to him by Gaddafi. A Turkish civilian was murdered in Libya by Gaddafi's thugs and Erdogan remains silent. HYPOCRIT!
10. Agree with #2. Endarkened world is more like it.
USA   (02.23.11)
upside down and backward world is closer to reality.
11. Sarah B beat me to it, still i say :WHY???!
tom ,   tel aviv   (02.23.11)
12. Isn't Libya still president of the UNHRC
Danny   (02.23.11)
or are they simply members nowdays...

cosmopolitist ,   planet earth   (02.23.11)
you are absolutely right at my opinion. peace and prosperity.
14. #9 Yes, hypocrites
greaser   (02.23.11)
Heard a word of the mavi marmara sponsors or warriors like IPPNW, Pax Christi, Medico etc? I confess, this is a stolen thought, but it's great nonetheless.
15. No surprise
john   (02.23.11)
A Palestinian falls and scrapes his knee it becomes front page news...maybe even a UN Resolution. 1,000 Libyans killed by their own leader...where is the outrage? Eyh...not surprising.
16. Don't miss the target! Stop Iran by force!
E1   (02.23.11)
The West allowed dictators which have one foot in an oil barrell and the other foot soon in an atomic bomb barrell. Any attempt of the people to liberate will find them and the world threaten to explode the barrells
17. To: Harris at No. 8
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.23.11)
I appreciate your humanitarian concerns .... I just get a little tired of it being a one-way street all the time.
18. Erdogan
Moragh   (02.23.11)
LOL! he's the last lump of.....!
19. DOING SOMETHING
Mark ben Josuf ,   USA   (02.24.11)
The US Marines have already been there and done that on "the shores of Tripoli." Maybe those who want the US to do something need reminding, the US is broke. We have two ongoing wars that not a dime has been raised to pay for. And the US military is already occupied. It would also do to remember that in the next week or two, the political impasse in the US is likely to result in a shut down of the government. When that happens, bills go unpaid. And when bills are unpaid, deliveries of food and fuel and ammunition to our troops is not guaranteed. The US cannot and should not do anything in Libya. We did not install the dictatorship there and it is not our job to try and remove it. Further, it would be the height of immorality to insert troops and then abandon them while they are under fire or otherwise in harm's way. Democracy may be a commie, Islamist plot as Glenn Beck says. But the US can and should NOT stop it in Libya. If Glenn Beck and his cronies like, I'm sure they can afford to get their Goldline sponsors to fund a ship and a few thousand AK-47 so they can go themselves. Other countries are free to make their own choices. But the US should sit this out.
20. #8 I have no tears for Libya
Sue ,   Los Angeles   (02.24.11)
The Libyan protesters are also our enemies and may turn out to be worse than Gadhafi. They are the same types who caused the downfall of Mubarak in Egypt: Marxists and the Muslim Brotherhood. They have a common agenda to destroy Israel and ethnically cleanse the Middle East of Jews. Harris, yesterday, because Mubarak is now gone, Egypt let Iranian war vessels sail through the Suez Canal - past the coast of Israel ! Today, a grad missile landed on homes in Beersheva. Our concern needs to be for Israelis, not for our enemies, and in preventing our own people from becoming "victims."
21. do not stop Arabs from exterminating each other
(02.24.11)
let them self destruct, it is the best outcome and well deserved punishment after the mayhem they have done to humanity and the destruction of so many civilizations in 1400 years
22. To "cosmopolitist", #7
Tahl   (02.24.11)
While I agree with the general principle that you advocate - not to generalize people - I take offense in the examples you provided. It sounds like you are trying to make Zionism and Netanyahu sound like bad things. Am I wrong on this? If this is indeed the case then your post is anything but innocent.
23. Gaddafi Duck
(02.24.11)
If this nutter was a regular citizen he'd have been tried and hung a long time ago - he is a murderous skank - as supposed head of government (albeit a banana republic) who OK'd the blowing up of an airliner over Lockerbie. Who would get away with that? Someone who has control of oil, that's who. Makes me sick. He shouldn't be given a trial, he needs one bullet to the head - we all know what he's guilty of.
24. How many white people you recently killed?
Moshe ,   Netanya   (02.24.11)
Let them fight it. The West should step aside. Arabs who loved Gaddafi changed their minds because they want a realy killing dictator, and Gaddafi stopped his nuks (after Bush invaded Iraq). He is perceived as weak by other Arabs who loved him before because they ask now: "How many white people you recently killed?"
25. to nr. 22.
cosmopolitist ,   planet earth   (02.25.11)
i have a reason why i reject zionism, as well as i reject islam(ism) and roman-catholicism. as for giving examples i can also say: all russians donot like the russian government, all indians donot like the indian government, all chinese donot like the chinese government/regime. when all like their government, the government has all the votes of the population, which can only happen in a dictatorship after election-fraud. i donot like distinction/discrimination between people, for what history teaches us to where that could/can lead. iam in favor of democracy and fair and just human rights for everybody, everywhere and always. the world is one country and mankind is one people. human behaviour/life is everywhere and always the same.i have seen it with my own eyes for i visited every continent except antarctica we are all human (beings). we breathe the same air. we all have the right on a place under the sun. nobody has asked to be born or be put on this world/planet. i hope that i have answered your questions and that everything is clear to you and that you understand and respect my opinion even if you donot agree with me. we all have the right/freedom on our own opinion(s). shalom/shalaam.
26. ahhh i would say number 21 got s my vote for sure!!!
(02.24.11)
let them kill each other so we dont have to!!! AHHAHAH
27. Smadar Peri
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (02.25.11)
I don't think Israelis should comment on the Libyan civil war where different ethnic groups and tribes fighting each other for control of oil. But if you do comment, put it in context. Obama butchered more Afghan civilians than Gaddafi has Libyans, and with less justification. Why didn't you call to stop Obama?
28. Re : 9. Turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan proves to be a hypocrit
Turkish lady ,   Istanbul   (02.24.11)
Dear Sir. If you check out well, you will see that there are 25.000 turkish people in libya who worked for turkish construction companies. Erdogan knows very well when he has to speak and shout. Only fools shout to a pyscho .To the pyscho who even doesnt hesitate to kill his people and mentally ill.
