A flower in the desert Op-ed: Mideast turmoil makes one wonder about world’s focus on tiny Israel, generosity to Arabs Hagai Segal - COMMENT - The Arabs has nothing to do with it. 3. Thank you, Mr. Segal
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.25.11)
Truly a frank discussion and a reality-invoking editorial. Thank you mostly for reassuring me -- as I look around at Israel's neighbors -- that we truly are a light unto the nations. A gift that has always contributed to civilization and humankind and continues to do so, despite enormous obstacles deliberately placed in our way. Israel's neighbors, such as they are, are destroyers; violent and murderous. Instead of using their vast resources to create, improve and build, they pocket most of it and toss a few crumbs to a populace about whom they care not at all. The only things they seem to know how to build are ever more luxurious palaces (470 in Saudi Arabia alone). They could have abandoned their hatred and turned to Israel to ask for help in making their vast deserts suitable for agriculture, but no. Putting solid gold fixtures in the 100 bathrooms of one Saudi palace is far more important. In the next three to four months, without direct military intervention on the part of the West (principally NATO), all of the Middle East will be ablaze, save for one tiny little oasis in the sea of desert -- Israel. I wonder what the world will say then. Israel truly is a light unto the nations. Too bad they are blinded by hatred.
4. Concentration on Israel
graczek ,   Maryland, USA   (02.25.11)
Why? Because as terrible as governments may be in some Arab states and Iran, at least those nations exist legitimately and hopefully will reform. Israel, by contrast, exists illegitimately and can be characterized as the focal source of geopolitical infection that has given rise to all the Mideast turmoil ever since exiled Jews began their illicit return to the Holy Land circa 1876. Remove this illegality and peace will reign in the Mideast.

6. #4 The only reason world cares about ME
Ze'ev ,   Lod   (02.25.11)
Is the oil. Without it arabs would be living in 14th century environment as they did before the beginning of the 20th century. As of today the main contribution of the Arab leaders to humanity is a stable supply of oil. Isn't that great?
7. A Flower in the Desert
Sonny ,   Canada   (02.25.11)
To # 4 You should get your facts straight before making a false statement. Israel has existed for over 3,000 yrs , Israel has given back the Sinai , Gaza Strip and maybe one day the Golan for Peace. What have any of our neighbors offered other than war & terrorism ? NADDA !!!

9. In the Arab World
mike caton ,   USA   (02.25.11)
I think we have learned (or should have learned) that in the Arab world, things can only go from bad to worse. No matter how distasteful Ghedaffi, and the other Abab tyrants are, we may actually regret their death or exile; from horrible thugocracy to just as horrible Mullacracy (Imamocracy) and then back again. This cycle will not end in the forseeable future.

sarah one can easily understand from your post that you suffer from the same delusion of grandeur as most of the israelis abroad do i belive the ones in israel is more aware of the situaiton at least i hope so your opinions are always one sided and hate deepley rotted in ur heart against arabs which i am not fun of myself but you know what those things you mentioned is not only way to peace in order to achive it you guys must do your part stop killing civilians juts like hamas stop settelment and get down from the clouds to ground more importantly put this in your mind jews are not diffrent from other peoples they are juts humans as others people will lıke you if you start to show a piece of humility but god forbid if that happnes :) anyway its not always one sides fault never been and never will be by the way som flowers have barbs get rid of yours
11. a very naive attempt to portray jews AGAIN as the victims
Marwan ,   Tel Aviv, Palestine   (02.25.11)
whereas israel is the essential source of all suffering in the middle east (and that includes its being behind the creation of dictatorships that are fully condoned by europe & the US)
12. graczek
Emma ,   London   (02.25.11)
You are incredibly deluded if you think that by destroying Israel you will have peace in the Middle East. Will that make peace between the Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims who hate each other? There is nothing illegal about the establishment of the state of Israel any more than the establishment of Jordan, India or Pakistan was illegal. As a committed anti-Semite who obviously hates Jews and Israelis why are you spending so much of your time and energy on an Israel website? Do you hope to spread your malicious drivel - if so you are failing miserably. Crawl back into the hole that came you slithered out of.
13. a flower
debbie ,   israel   (02.25.11)
What a laugh. Women are being horribly and cruelly abused and murdered in every single arab country, including Gaza and the West Bank, by their own men. People are now being slaughtered in Libya by their own leader. I read in the paper this week about the horrid rapes that are being committed in the thousands in CONGO against little girls, mothers and old women, even a one month old baby boy. Not a word, not a single word. Not a protest, not a condemnation, not a human rights group, not the UN, not the many and varied groups who are so vocal in the hatred and condemnation of Israel duringCast Lead, and the death of 9 Turkish terrorists on a boat that was trying to violate the justified blocade of Gaza. Where are they all now?
14. flower in the desert
debbie ,   israel   (02.25.11)
SONNY, You left out the most important point. There is absolutely nothing "illegitimate" about Israel's existence, as No. 4 seems to think. Israel was mandated and created by an overwhelming UN vote in1947. Why do you say "illegitimate?"
15. denial
sarah ,   vancouver, canada   (02.25.11)
You can convince yourself and others till you turn blue in the face - the fact of the matter is that Israel, Palestine, Judea, whatever you want to call the land is Jewish land and has always been so - although it was ruled over since Ad30 by the Romans, then Salah-e Din, then Crusaders, then Turks, then Brits (never self ruled by Arabs - always people from elsewhere). There has always been a Jewish oresence in the area, even though many times we were persecuted and banned, we still stayed, came back, and then in 1860's started coming back in bigger and bigger umbers. The local Arab population in Jerusalem in 1884 according to Turkish documents was much smaller than the Jewish population. These are FACTS!!! Arabs arrived in large numbers from Lebanon and Egypt in the early 1900's looking for work, as the local population of JEWS was growing, which meant there could be work found for itinerant Arabs. These are facts - look yourself in the mirror and see that you concentrate on the Jews, but you should be looking at yourselves and then you can fix your REAL PROBLEMS in your society.
16. To: No. 10
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.25.11)
Excuse me, but permit me to point out to you that the Arabs have instigated six wars against Israel, all of which they have lost. The ersatz "Palestinians" -- who have no legitimate right, title or claim to one single centimeter of Israel -- have engaged in seven decades of unrelenting terror. Yet I hear you chide Israel for "killing civilians" with nary a word for the ersatz "Palestinians," who have killed thousands of Jews, both in Israel and in the Diaspora, with impunity for decades. What was that you were saying about one-sided opinions? How dare you compare Israel to Hamas? How dare you? The settlements are fully legal. Israel acquired the West Bank -- which is non-sovereign territory -- in the course of fighting a DEFENSIVE war against Jordan. Read up on international law governing this acquisition here: http://www.globalpolitician.com/24388-israel-jerusalem Jews ARE different from other people in one very, very key respect: no single identifiable group has been persecuted to the extent the Jews have been persecuted. I'm not interested in who likes or does not like me. I am passionate about the Jewish people, the Jewish religion and Jewish culture. If that offends you -- too bad.
17. Graczek world is crahing down - quel domage!
jo   (02.25.11)
Read # 4 first. Remove this illegality (Israel) and peace will reign in the mideast --- your mideast?do you drink only 90% proof. graczsk, you are an idiot. (with a name like this it doesn't surprise me.) Now lets see; without israelis living there, Peace is indeed reigning supreme in: Iran, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen, Bahrain, Qatar, Tunis, Libya, Afghanistan, (forgotten anyone?).An imbecile like you, didn't realise that the smart Jews nedded only one operative in each of the above counties in order to change the " sand belt" of the middle East. How is that for a " tour de force" graczek ; without firing a single jewish bullet. They don't make them any smarter ! ! !

Oh yes I do. Why were you named for a character in Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath?" By the way, the correct spelling is "dearie." So you are not clairvoyant and you cannot spell. Is there anything you CAN do?
20. Seriously?
Tel Avivoid ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (02.25.11)
Goodness, I had no idea this was how the world worked. Thank you for informing me. Now I'm off to conquer my neighbor's living room. I have the smallest apartment in the building, therefore justifying my actions.

Hey Marwan, you don't even know where you're located: Tel Aviv is in ISRAEL, and there's no such place as Palestine. You need a geography lesson.

25. #4 graczek - Delusion is Not Only Sad, People Die From It
Dallas ,   Canada   (02.25.11)
Every statement you said is false. Please begin to read history and learn about the cultures which you so neatly, ignorantly and self-righteously judge. You have an effect on the world whether you believe it or not, and propagating Big Lies and plain libels as you have done actually does have an influence and often results in others being hurt and killed. Please think about that. Borrow a book and learn, then get on your soapbox, but seek truth next time.
26. To Graczek, my fellow Marylander.
Steven ,   Rockville, USA   (02.25.11)
Graczek I am also from Maryland, Please let me know which mental institution you are residing. I can visit you there, unless you are kept in isolation for those with sever mental problems. You seem to fit this category.

Boris Yasdnilkov ,   Fernandina Beach, US   (02.25.11)
No. 25, your comment to No. 4 reading: "You have an effect on the world whether you believe it or not, and propagating Big Lies and plain libels as you have done actually does have an influence and often results in others being hurt and killed."" is absolutely correct. Falsehoods and half-truths are causing a great deal of harm in the world today, It seems to be the way of many individuals in politics, academia, the media and in our "religious" centers, whatever they may be.
29. Easy answer: Oil and Anti-Semitism.
Chaim ,   Israel   (02.25.11)
Why do so many focus on tiny Israel and bogus human rights violations supposedly occuring in Israel while the rest of the Mid East is blowing sky high? Easy answer. Oil and Anti-Semitism.
30. I'm afraid you are only too right, #9
Cameron ,   USA   (02.25.11)
Name me a culture more poorly suited to meet & adapt to the ocean of changes that the 21st century is bringing. Their culture of introverted, feudal values and mindset has turned them into a plague unto themselves.
