1. Translation: Jews control the world
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (02.28.11)
Not even trying to hide it...bragging how Jewish American politicians forced a Presidential Veto.
2. The people of Middle East - We Can
Soon   (02.28.11)
3. Congressional power
David J ,   Chicago, IL   (02.28.11)
Our bicameral system is a terribly inefficient way to govern until one looks at the parliamentary system. You folks have found a way to get almost nothing of importance done.
4. thank you MR Obama
SAM ,   Beirut   (02.28.11)
for putting Israel on the path where it belongs self-destructive you tried to eliminate anti-semitism in the world by having peace in the holy land ,but the jews refused your offer . they are not listening to the anger around them and the tidale wave that eventually will liberate Jerusalem .
5. Excellent analysis
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.28.11)
I would, however, point out one thing. Israel is a parliamentary democracy; as such, Israelis vote for the party, not the person. Under the United States' system, we vote for the person, not the party. This is the case for both Houses of Congress, but not the president. The president is elected by the Electoral College, not necessarily by the people. There have been a number of instances where the candidate who won the most popular votes did not win the presidency. Also, with respect to checks and balances -- it works in terms of counter-balancing the executive branch and the legislative branch, but don't forget that all important third -- the judiciary. The Supreme Court of the United States can rule on the actions of the president and on the actions of the Congress. If they declare something unconstitutional, that's it. The only way to counter a ruling of unconstitutionality by the U.S. Supreme Court is to amend the Constitution. The Constitution has only been amended twenty-seven times; the first ten of those being the Bill of Rights, which were enacted in one fell swoop. It's not that easy to amend the Constitution. I don't know that America's system of government and its electoral processes would translate all that easily to Israel.
6. The Jewish State has already emulated
Israeli 2   (02.28.11)
way too many other systems which does not impress anyone. 30 years ago I also used to be in favor of "dolarizatia" (making the dollar Israeli currency)....because I thought: 1) Nothing can be superior to any USA system and 2) Israeli currency is weak and inflation ever soaring. I was wrong on both counts. Now, I humbly say: Let us be what we are . Let us do what we do best..... being Israel. No more adoptions of any kind. As a matter of fact, let us abandon democracy and opt for spiritual kingdom. We will excell at that for sure. Guaranteed.
7. Amrican Congress
BMS ,   USA   (02.28.11)
It actualy Highlighted the weakness of Congress and How they are easily bought by the jowish lobby. Obama is a week president. What congress did is damaged US prestige in the world and made Israel more insecure . The wind of change is blowing in the middle east and US and Israel will find themselves on the loosing side. And congress to thank for that.
8. Pro-Israel Congressmen had to pay price since Israel did not
Bloodyscot ,   Dallas, Texas   (02.28.11)
There was a cost for this veto for pro-Israel Americans yet many in Israel do not seem to understand that or really care.
9. when I look at where the Torah got us in thousands of years
tom ,   tel aviv   (02.28.11)
and on the other hand at the US Constitution and where it got Americans in 200+ yearsI have a feeling that God Almighty swithched horses somewhere along the way & forgot to tell us about it.
10. Israel Lobby runs the USA
crackerjack   (02.28.11)
.how sad to see a once great nation go down to a handfull of foreign lobbyists and betray its own elected leaders.
11. Power of Congress
Concerned American ,   USA   (02.28.11)
How sad to read this article to have someone describe the UN settlement veto as power of congress and praise our congressional mebers as God-like characters. On the contrary, our congressional members (note I don't call them leaders) are the most pathetic bunch with no shame to try to keep their voting blocks and campaign contribution coming, that I am about to send them some teeth whitening toothpaste to remove some of the yellow stains they have received from kissing a$$. I have more use of my dingleberry than this group who has put my beloved country in 14 trillion dollars debt.
12. What world?
Judd Rusnak ,   Australia   (02.28.11)
I can't see the Jews controlling the EU, Africa, Asia and South America. What a rubbish comment (Jews control the world). In the last vote in the security council, 14 countries voted to punish Israel, is that a world domination?. There is only ONE country that is not controlled by the ARAB lobby, which is the USA. It is an ARAB domination of the world (the other way around).
13. Support is not coercion of the compromised in support of som
Stephen in New York   (02.28.11)
Support is not coercion of the compromised in support of something anti-American. If there is general support of Israel among Congress and the American people it is because of shared values and common interests. The delusional that claim otherwise are merely that: delusional
14. Ironically, Ettinger, the veto weakened Israel
Smith ,   TA, Israel   (02.28.11)
because it is unlikely the USA will veto again. It demonstrated Israel's isolation in the world and their utter dependence on goodwill. It was a well-played diplomatic manouver by the Palestinians that exposed the weakness of Netenyahu. Since Obama was elected Ettinger has done nothing but harp on about the "power of Congress" and this has utterly distorted his world view and powers of analysis
15. it was a nice bait
Fayez ,   Lebanon .   (02.28.11)
then Obama and the international community will drag Natanyahu from his neck tigh to the peace process to sign on the dotted line saying : Listen dude .......... <<>>
16. UN should be abolished. This way we wouldnt need US's help.
Tahl   (02.28.11)
If the UN is abolished, most of our political troubles would disappear with it, and thus we wouldn't need America's help. But as long as this corrupt, biased, hypocritical and politically-hijacked organization still exists - then it is only fair that the US Congress would do what it can to fight it. I want to believe it supports us not because of AIPAC, but due to comradery and shared interests and beliefs.
17. No, the Congress does not control UN votes.
Hostage   (02.28.11)
The US Embassy isn't moving to Jerusalem any time soon either.
18. Smith #14 Israel: "Ironically...
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (02.28.11)
If Obama had not vetoed the Security Council's vote against Israel, you would have written that the outcome had weakened Israel. Now that Obama did veto the Security Council, you write that "ironically" it did weaken Israel. In other words, no matter which way the Security Council voted, whether Obama vetoed the proposition or not, Israel was weakened. This logical snare which you've tried to pass over the Reader just doesn't work, Mr. Smith. Perhaps, in your own blind need to castigate our government and anything which does not accord with your own preconceived views, you've lost the ability to make a logical assessment of the situation. Perhaps, in view of your loss, you'd like to go back and re-evaluate your own views for purposes of clarity. Once having done so, would you kindly report your findings to the Readership? Thank you.
19. #14, actually it exposed the hypocrisy of the UN
Danny   (02.28.11)
At a time when the Arab world is exploding and Gadaffi was starting to crack down the only thing the EU and UN had on their minds was jews building an extra toilet in the West Bank. Compare and contrast the speed with which the UN condemned Israel for Cast Lead, for the Mavi incident and how long it took them to get their act together on Libya - which is STILL on the UNHRC.
20. #15 they got drawn in 2000.
Danny   (02.28.11)
Palestinians turned them down. Now just get Hizbollah to say what exactly would allow them to disarm.....
21. Nr 5.
Orao. ,   Srbia..   (02.28.11)
The Example of Leadership. The president is elected by the Electoral College, not necessarily by the people. There have been a number of instances where the candidate who won the most popular votes did not win the presidency. Comment - I think this is the best way of Electing THE LEADER. As in Biblical Times, The Elders Elected and Anointed The King. An Elder and or Voted Leader of the Peole, surely has more Maturity and Insight than the Ordinary People. That Such Matured and or Elected Ones, are better Electer of, THE GREAT LEADER is Obvious, and it still in the Principle of bouth Democracy and Even Theocracy- GOD BLESS !. Orao.Srbia.

23. Orao @ 21, Electoral College was established due to
leo ,   usa   (02.28.11)
the limitations of the time. Given contemporary advances in the field of communication there is no longer a need for it and we have to switch to popular vote system to make sure that each and every vote will count. And the only reason we have not done it yet is because current system suits our politicians.
24. To: No. 15
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.28.11)
Israel's borders were drawn on June 11, 1967. They have been adjusted twice -- once, to trade off the Sinai for peace with Egypt; the second time to Allow the ersatz "Palestinians" in Gaza to prove to the world just how much the ersatz "Palestinians" are incapable of self-government. Depending on how events in Egypt unfold, we may have take back both Gaza and Sinai, in which case all of the residents of Gaza and Sinai will be repatriated to Egypt. Judea and Samaria will be formally annexed, and its Arab residents repatriated to Jordan. And Lebanon (meaning Hezbollah) had better really, REALLY behave itself, because if not, the Litani is Israel's new northern border. Got that, dude?
25. To: No. 10
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.28.11)
Really? I thought the NRA ran the U.S. Congress. It is certainly the most powerful lobby in the United States, and has managed to successfully thwart desperately-needed gun control legislation. Another powerful lobby is the AARP --which has successfully lobbied against means testing for Social Security entitlement and Medicare eligibility (which is why multi-millionaires and billionaires collect Social Security and have Medicare benefits) and the initial ages of eligibility (the ages of 62 [women] and 65 [men], which were subsequently raised to 63 [women] and 66 [men]) need desperately to be raised to keep pace with actual mortality rates for men and women, which are in the low 80s, something which AARP vociferously lobbies against. There is also the lobby for the American Association of Ethical Pharmaceuticals Manufacturers, another extraordinarily powerful lobby that works very hard to make sure that you pay a fortune for prescription medication which you need to remain alive and works equally hard to keep the much cheaper generic versions (most of which are manufactured abroad -- India, actually) unavailable to Americans. Let us not forget AHIP (America's Health Insurance Plans), another huge lobby that works night and day to make sure that most Americans will no longer be able to afford even the most basic medical insurance via HMOs. They are extraordinarily powerful. Then there are the lobbies for the automobile manufacturers, big gas and oil, et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseum. I could go on and on, but it would probably be lost on you. You are not the "crackerjack." You are the nut.
26. Long after Obama is a bitter memory...
Chaim ,   Israel   (02.28.11)
Obama is out of sync with the vast majority of Americans on most issues. Obama hates Israel while Israel is one of the most favourably viewed nations in America. Israel needs to invest more time and resources to reach out to our many true American friends. Explain why we reject racist building freezes and the monstrous Two State Final Solution, instead of pretending to accept them. Obama will be mercifully gone in 2012. Perhaps sooner if he can't produce a legal U.S. birth certificate. Israel's alliance with America long predated Obama and will be strong long after Obama is a bitter memory.
27. nr 23. - Could be - but -
Orao. ,   Srbia.   (02.28.11)
-it doesent change the Principle Truth, of about what I have stated in nr 21. By the Way - Reprecentative Voting, or, Reprecentative Democracy, is also Democracy. Orao.Srbia.
28. #9 We Christians in the majority recognize the Torah
Claudia ,   Tampa USA   (03.01.11)
is the foundation of Christianity & most Americans are Christians- - regardless of what that dumb ass Obama tells the muslim world. I believe we have been so successful because the God of Abraham is in our lives. If that changes we will go down, and if we allow Israel to be destroyed we will also be destroyed by Islam. We will not allow either to happen no matter who the minorities put in the white house. Obama has soiled his own relationship with Israel and with God, not ours.
29. Plus 500,000 Evangelical Christians wrote their congress
Claudia ,   Tampa USA   (03.01.11)
people and the white house to challange the corrupt UN. Everyone knows the UN is now controlled by the Arab oil states, so what did that vote show? At least one country can't be bought off with oil.
30. NOT SO FAST...
Frank-el ,   Seattle, USA   (03.01.11)
"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States..." Odd, I don't see the word "Israel" in the Constitution, despite the author's bizarre logic that the US Congress has some magical mandate to treat Israel as oh-so-special. Quite the opposite, I expect my representatives to be active defenders of what's good for America. And our elected ones need to reread the Constitional requirement that: "And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign State."
