1. And we should do well to keep it this way.
Tahl   (03.01.11)
This poll is good news, but we shouldn't take this support for granted. We must never assume that America is "in our pocket", and that we have a carte blanche to do as we please, and America will always cover for us. This is the surest way to lose this support. And frankly we all know that without America, our little country, stuck in a sea of nearly a billion Muslims - is doomed. Though I can't stand Thomas Friedman, he once mentioned a sentiment which is prevalent in the minds of many Americans - that Israel is a renegade child who ran away from home, but still using his dad's credit card. Even if this is an exaggerated statement, we must still do what it takes to minimize the burden on America, to make it easier for it to support us. That latest veto in the UN was very costly to America. And if this means freezing the settlements for a while, and biting the bullet until the next elections, then so be it. Our support from America is deep and well-founded, based on shared values, ideologies, beliefs and interests. We must make every effort to keep it this way, rather than have this support based solely on AIPAC. The one thing we should insist on though, is the release of Jonathan Pollard. The man has paid far more than his debt to society, and enough is enough. In this matter morality is on our side.
2. It used to be 100%
Ricardo Macher ,   Karnei Shomron IL   (03.01.11)
Oh my God! I am scared. 63% is nothing. It used to be 100%. It shows that we are loosing the battle for public relations. I am really worried.
3. Sad when a nation's survival depend on some polls in US.
Avi ,   USA   (03.01.11)
This number isn't much of a surprise as US media make sure American are bombarded with Israel's narrative of the story. But the trend is changing. It used to be almost 100% a few years back.Just give it 5- 10 years more and see where it'll be.People are turning to alternative news sources on the web and beginning to educate themselves on ME issues.
4. #2 - the all time record was 64%
Support is strong   (03.01.11)
Support for Israel in the US is near its historic high. Since 9/11 - the support for Israel kept being strong and stable.
5. Israel is a valuable US ally
Menachem ,   Israel   (03.01.11)
The US-Israeli relation is mutually valuable. Israel provides the US with cutting-edge technology, intelligence and is America's most loyal ally in the world today. The US "aid" which constitutes a diminishing fraction of Israel's expanding GDP, secures thousands of jobs in the US military industry.

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (03.01.11)
For pity's sake, read the article instead of posting basis the caption. Perhaps then you would not have missed this: "According to the poll, the rate of support for Israel stands at 63%. The all time record was 64% following the First Gulf War in 1991. The lowest ever support rate was recorded in 1998 when only 37% expressed a favorable opinion of Israel." Israel has never enjoyed nearly 100% support, as you state. Read the article, for heaven's sake.
7. #3 FACTS not "narratives"
Menachem ,   Israel   (03.01.11)
In contrast to bigotted Europeans, most Americans prefer facts and not anti-Israeli "narratives" and anti-Jewish propaganda.
8. ***Sarah***at 6, The problem seems to
Chris Rettenmoser ,   Bayerisch Gmain Germ   (03.01.11)
be the schizophrenia of large groups of the American voters, who are pro Israel and at the same time vote for Hussein Obama...are they really SO naive...??? Can they really be educated about Obamas true nature...???
9. Terrible statistics. Two in ten hate us?
Josh   (03.01.11)
With all the secret racism against American Jews taught an lauded on TV, Radio and by Rabbis, it won't stop till it gets to zero and then the extremists will have a green light. Enough with the teaching by radical leaders that monsters are everyone but natives. It is an obvious cult trick to create monsters outside the gates in order to win the minds of those inducted in the cult. Israelis are smarter than that. Barbaric seed comments and radical retaliation against people who express a derogatory statement against the Jews will only cause millions not the one or two that listen to such and idiot, to hate us. Stop the facist temptations. We are secure with all our flaws? Insecurity in who we are will have a price. End protexia, end cults end hate mongers just looking for a pat on the head. Let's start being like Abraham and making friends with the righteous rather than a blanket no-one but us is righteous or good. We know the truth.

Jews are by nature and inclination tolerant and liberal. In the United States, Jews have always traditionally voted Democrat. It isn't a question of naivete on the part of the Jews, but rather that Obama managed to fool a lot of people in the United States. The Congressional and Gubernatorial Elections this past November have proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that he isn't fooling very many people any more. All I can say in defense of the Jews is that support for Obama among Jewish voters has plummeted like a stone. Obama will not be re-elected; it is likely that he will not even be the Democratic candidate for the presidency in 2012. It will be most interesting to see how Obama handles the worrisome events in the Arab and Moslem world. He dropped Ben-Ali and Mubarak, two very strong supporters of the United States. I have always suspected that he had a private agenda; now I know it for a fact. Mr. Obama is a megalomaniac who has forgotten that he works for the American people and that he is obligated to pursue the best interests of the United States. He has not done that. He is in pursuit of an Islamist agenda that will bring to power the likes of Al Qaeda and the Moslem Brotherhood. I do not want to wait for 2012. Obama needs to be impeached, now.

Menachem ,   Israel   (03.01.11)
The US is no doubt Israel's most important ally and most Americans are pro-Israel. However, we should keep in mind the Washington DC is not into the business of philantrophy and wouldn't support Israel if she wasn't perceived as an important US ally. Let's keep in mind that Israel survived without hardly any US support during the difficult years 1948-1967. Conclusion: the US is our most important ally but Israel's existence can only be secured by Israel itself.
12. #8 Chris, very good question. Americans are very naive.
Noodles ,   Coney Island   (03.01.11)
13. Hello, I'm from the Gallup Poll... Do you support Israel?
seadog1946 ,   InSeasonalTransit   (03.01.11)
Let's see here... if I say "No", I may be branded as an anti-semite... that's not good. Decisions, decisions...
14. Not surprising
Siedjan ,   Indonesia   (03.01.11)
This is the same Americans that supported Iraq war because they believe neocon's WMD lies. American people are easily duped by pro-Isr@el media.

"Let's keep in mind that Israel survived without hardly any US support during the difficult years 1948-1967. Conclusion: the US is our most important ally but Israel's existence can only be secured by Israel itself. " Absolutely. Israel not only survived but dominated and with a rag tag army to boot. Someone sure is in your corner .
16. seadog1946 @ 13, you have a point, but given the fact
leo ,   usa   (03.01.11)
that poll was anonymous I do not think you need to be concerned.
17. #2;Ricardo, just busted AGAIN
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (03.01.11)
It's typical of the anti-Israel writer's to lie, in a cheap attempt to prove their point. So Ricardo says (support for Israel) used to be 100% when the article itself stated 64% was the all time high. Nobody agrees 100% on anything, This Gallup Poll has been taken once/year for about the last 30 years. Last year the Palestinians had 20% support from Americans. Now it's dropped to 17% (a 3% drop).Put another way, support for the Palestinians in the last year has dropped by 15% among Americans. While Support for Israel remained at 63%, a near record high. Why is that? Because the leftist supporters, many of which are sincere "people of good will", don't like being lied to, and manipulated by cynical Arab propagandists. This poll is taken every year in February. But since last year what has happened? Simple Pallywood has been caught in 3 BIG LIES: 1) The flotilla incident, everybody who saw the video's knows the Arab terrorists started it and then lied about it. 2) The mask came off of Gaza, after reading and hearing for years the terms: "Starvation", "Open air prison", "Concentration camps" etc (to describe Gaza and vilify Israel)., the facts came out, and backfired on the flotilla. We all saw the pictures of the new swimming pools (Water Parks) for the kids, New upscale malls, The Food Courts filled with an Abundance and Wide variety of food. Upscale restaurants that cater to a booming Middle class., no fuel shortages (except those faked by Hamas by stealing the fuel, and refusing fuel shipments from Israel to create a fake crisis). 3) The FAKE border fight started by the Jordanian military, then blamed on Israel. Again video's proved the the IDF never crossed the border (the Jordan/Israeli border) and the Jordanian military infiltrated by Hezbollah sympathizer's started the shooting first. There were of course were many other fake stories, but these 3 high profile fabricated stories woke up many on the left, so now they're withdrawing their support. Now only the most die hard and antisemitic support the Arabs. For the Pals it's:CASE CLOSED.
18. why we support Yisrael
Support ,   will continue   (03.01.11)
Many Americans support Israel for religious reasons, both jewish and christian. Many others support Israel because we now see it as a tough, feisty little country on the frontline against islamic imperialism with a "don't tread on me" attitude. Stay strong, Israel.
19. To live and die by 'polls' is stupid...
Edithann ,   USA   (03.01.11)
Anyway, do the polling again and again..and start asking some real questions about Israeli's influcence on American Policies and then see what you get? Like all the AIPAC'S, the money Israel steals from American tax payers..oh, an of course the Iraqi war...all Israel ispired! What do you think the polls would show then? TATA

Now, now, don't be such a sore loser. Just because most Americans are much smarter than you and see the issues in the Middle East for what they are and the ersatz "Palestinians" for what THEY are -- an unruly and violent bunch of unrepentant terrorists -- and Israel for what IT is -- the only stable democracy and dependable ally of the United States in the entire Middle East -- is absolutely no reason at all for you to go sulk in the corner. You cannot help the fact that you are completely demented; no one is faulting you. TA TA.

Here's a news flash: All polls conducted in the United States are done on the basis of anonymity. It's amazing -- do you realize that every single talkback you have ever posted is a testament to your incredible stupidity? Congratulations! You are batting a thousand in an extraordinarily embarrassing category. Mommy Troll and Daddy Troll must be soooo proud!

23. Israel has individual friends but not political regimes
zionist forever   (03.01.11)
The US has for the past 30 years or so the US has tried to sell itself as Israel's best and unconditional friend. It suited them because there was the cold war and the US had no other ally in the region and there are pro Israel lobbyists. We have started to believe the US would always be our best buddy we could rely on. Then Obama came along and gave us all a wake up call if it suits an administration to be pro Israel they will be. When it suits them to support Israel's enemies and harm Israel then it will. Individuals do not decide if they are supporters of Israel because it suits their current circumstances. Individuals either believe it and support it as long as they continue believing it not because of political ambition.
24. US Favors Israel
Syd Chaden ,   Palermo Calif USA   (03.01.11)
With an anti-Israel President, State Department, and media, it's great that the US still largely favors Israel. It would be nice if the majority of American Jews stood up and supported Israel, too.
25. Oh of course we are
Cameron ,   USA   (03.01.11)
We get irritated over this & that, but when affairs are heavy & vital in nature, we are there. Hang loose. We are NOT Europeans. Islamic malevolence and mayhem truly lack appeal.
26. A small error in the article
Dikehopper ,   USA   (03.01.11)
You can find Gallup’s summary of the report by searching under: Americans Maintain Broad Support for Israel (I don’t remember if links are allowed in Ynet comments.) The article says that about 63% of Americans rate Israel favorably. The summary says that figure is higher, at 68%. The 63% figure is the answer to a different question. If that is not the highest rating of Americans’ favorability rating for all countries (and it may be – I don’t remember), it certainly is close to the highest. The report at Gallup’s site only came out yesterday. The link to the full report doesn’t work and they haven’t fixed it yet. The full report should show, as it has in previous years, that about 75% of Americans have a negative view of the Palestinian Authority versus 29% unfavorable for Israel. I think it’s safe to guess that the great majority of the 29% are on the solid political left and don’t like their own country, either. So we, the American people, maintain overwhelming support for Israel in spite of the mainstream media and pundits, academia and leftist groups. -------------- Yet there are a few Talkbackers who think they are supporting Israel while at the same time they insult us, the great majority of Americans, happy to be Israel’s best friends. We write them off as fringe nutcases. Every country has its nutcases.
27. #19; Edithann, and laughable ignorance
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (03.01.11)
Oh yes Edithann: "the money Israel steals from American tax payers" , as you put it. Have you ever done the math? The USA through various programs helps Israel with average of $5 billion/ year. With a population of 300 million people in the USA, that breaks down to roughly $16.67 person per year, so for a family of four, a grand total of a little less than $67.00 per year in taxes, or about $1.28 per week for a family of four. WOW, what a hardship on the American people. Now I'm sure that $0.18 cents a day for a family of four really hurts your family. Living in the trailer park and all. By contrast the USA imports about 12 million barrels/day of Oil. That comes to $400 Billion Dollars./ Day, the USA spends on Oil. Who do you think wield more influence OPEC in on the $400 Dollars/day, or AIPAC that gives about $10 million dollars per election cycle (every 2 years)? The choice is simple: $400 Billion/Day for OPEC or $10 million/2 years for AIPAC? Who has more power over our government, moron? If money rules? CASE CLOSED

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (03.01.11)
Well, the branch of government that most closely reflects the pulse of the country is the House of Representatives, where Israel has never enjoyed stronger support. It is the House that can increase or decrease foreign aid; it is the House that can bestow or withdraw most favored nation status; it is the House that determines the budget and how it is to be allocated and it is the House that reflects the overall public opinion of the nation. I cannot agree more with the final two sentences in your post. Support for Israel comes from the American people's sense of fair play and appreciation of proportion. The American people loathe terrorism and terrorists and try as they might to come across as the poor, downtrodden, misunderstood "victims," the people of the United States are not buying what the ersatz "Palestinians" are selling. While the results of the poll are clearly a victory for Israel -- it's not about public relations or "hasbara" after all -- it is also far more than that. It is a victory for the principles of democracy which Americans hold dear and for the concept of loyalty which Americans value equally. They respect Israel’s unshakable commitment to democracy and they appreciate Israel’s steadfast loyalty to the United States. The ersatz "Palestinians" have tried to portray themselves as the "underdog" -- Americans love an underdog -- but the American people, displaying remarkable insight, have rejected this out of hand. We know intransigence when we see it and we know terrorists when we see them. Once again, the ersatz “Palestinians” have self-destructed. I don’t think they are capable of a better way and, frankly, I do not care. Soon enough, they will be someone else’s problem.
