1. U.S. Orgs that receive money from Foreign
Rod ,   Fargo N.Dakota   (03.03.11)
Govts have to be registered as Foreign agents
2. What diversion ?!?
Amihai ,   Yesha   (03.03.11)
The right is not at all afraid. Everything is already known, too, like what come from Moskovitz. And the national institutions, like their name explains, are not non-governemental organisation (NGO) like your's. The whole point of this law is to know if FOREIGN STATES are funding YOU, a fully politically engaged organisation, which make you an foreign agent. Or, at least, make you an organisation not at all fully israeli. If your forget too, the law is also for the rightist NGO, too.
3. #2 is correct
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (03.03.11)
Israelis wanted to investigate who funds the extreme Left after Goldstone critically damaged Israel with Betselem's help, rumors of Saudi funding for Betselem and Left-wing blogs admitting that they are well-paid for anti-Israeli activity. If Betselem is innocent and the investigation was a Right-wing"diversionary tactic", the Left would have demanded an investigation into everyone's funding to expose the Right. Instead, Betselem chose to stop the investigation. This hints that the rumors of illicit funding of Betselem are true.
4. Big difference!
john   (03.03.11)
There is a very big difference between wealthy individuals giving money from their pockets and foreign governments giving money to left-wing Israeli organizations.
5. Excellent article, Sarit Michaeli....
Ben Alofs ,   Bangor, UK   (03.03.11)
Thank you for pointing out the rank hypocrisy of the Right, whose acitivities in the Occupied Territories are illegal under international law and are being funded by wealthy foreigners, who will be able to remain out of sight. You make an excellent point that in contrast to this the funding of human rights groups in Israel by foreign governments is open to scrutiny, accountable and legal under Israeli and international law.
6. All the leftist screaming & shouting - what are they hiding
Mike ,   Oxford UK   (03.04.11)
Until all the leftist organisations started making such a fuss I never really though much about this topic... but clearly they have a lot to hide. I don't hear the right wing organisations complaining at all. In the UK I'm pretty sure it is illegal for NGOs to receive foreign funding...
7. Betselem is anti-israeli
MauMau ,   Tel aviv   (03.04.11)
betselem is an anti-israeli organization that doesn't hesitate to form alliances with all sorts of hateful arab/antisemitic other organizations just to fill their jewish sef-hatred feeling. it is very sad we got to such a situation.
8. Curious
Michael ,   Haifa   (03.04.11)
I would like to know if the State of Israel funds any NGO's abroad. If that is the case, why should they object to foreign countries supporting Israeli NGO's ? If the local NGO's are breaking a law by being funded, they should be prosecuted, but not investigated merely because they are being funded
9. Can you really honestly not see the difference?
Danny   (03.04.11)
Between a group funded by a foreign government forcing that government's agenda on an unwilling Israel and an individual funding a group?
10. #5, except they are not
Danny   (03.04.11)
As Sarit pointed out, after all the hysteria from the Left, the bill wasn't passed. The real fear these people have is that they will be exposed as having zero support from actual Israelis and people will stop having to pretend that "even Israelis say X", when it is clear they are simply the EU's b*tch.
11. #8, no one was stopping them being funded
Danny   (03.04.11)
and being funded by the EU or anyone else. What i think people were fed up with was people like Bt'selem being quoted as "even Israelis say" when in fact they are being paid almost exclusively by non-Israelis. If Breaking the Silence doesn't wants to change it's title from an Israeli NGO to a wholely EU and NIF funded NGO then it should raise money from Israelis or stop pretending it is Israeli just because it happens to employ a few Israelis.
12. #5 Alofs rubbish talkback
Phil ,   Ireland   (03.04.11)
Left wing "Human Rights" groups never take on human rights abuses by Hamas and their ilk. I wonder where their funding comes from. Once again the Left sides with the right wing etremist Islamic terrorists.
13. B.S. Settlement activity is not illegal under international
Ben Yisrael ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (03.04.11)
law. This is a lie that the left propagates and has no basis in fact.
14. #10 Danny in need of correction
Ben Alofs ,   Bangor, UK   (03.04.11)
The bill sponsored by MK Ze'ev Elkin (Likud) was most certainly passed into law, but some amendments to it by MK Rotem of Yisrael Beiteinu were dropped. Under the new law Israeli NGOs must publish quarterly reports stating which funding they receive from foreign countries/governments. They also need to state in their advertisements and on their website if they receive funding from abroad. Failure to do so will results in heavy fines. Some more draconian amendments were dropped from the law, like taking away tax benefits from NGOs who receive support from foreign governments and the setting up of a McCarthy style committee on un-Israeli activities, that would of corse target progressive NGOs. Interestingly Rotem had initially agreed to let the proposed law apply to ALL foreign donations made to Israeli NGOs, but he subsequently dropped this amendment.... at the request of Zionist organizations (LOL), who told him that this would harm them. Sarit Michaeli makes a very good point, when she says that none of the activities sponsored by foreign governments are illegal under Israeli or international law, but if the foreign Zionist organizations would be forced under the new law to come clean about what activities they finance and to the tune of how many millions, it would become clear that American Zionist organizations are financing activities (colony building for example) that are ILLEGAL under international law. As such and also because they finance politically controversial projects these Zionist organizations would risk losing their tax exempt status!! This is what I mean with the rank hypocrisy of the Right in Israel!!
15. Here is Ben Alofs again with his
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (03.04.11)
anti-Israel drivel. There are no "occupied territories", Ben, there are only disputed territories. The Green Line, established in 1967 between Jordan and Israel (Moshe Dayan) was simply a ceasefire line, never a border, between the two entities separated on the basis of where their respective troops lay. The Green Line was made from a marker (pen) unfortunately a bit too thick on the map so that even it didn't distinguish over distances as much as several kilometres. I don't think you'll comprehend this, Ben, as your perceptions and analysis are so beclouded by your hatred of Israel and your love of Hamas. I certainly hope, for the sake of your patients, that your medical diagnoses are based on actual knowledge, rationality and clarity of purpose. Your historico-political viewpoints are certainly not.
16. Sarit
Michael Pielet ,   Boca raton, usa   (03.04.11)
H----r had his Jewish collaborators kastner and Rumkowski. The terrorists, PLO, Fatah, Hamas have Sarit as their collaborator. In every generation---
17. Foreign govt. funding of leftist NGOs is intolerable.
Chaim ,   Israel   (03.05.11)
There is no comparison between patriotic organizations which build, love and defend Israel and destructive organizations which demonize Israel, facilitate boycotts against Israel, contribute to modern blood libels like the Goldstone Report etc. The first group are commendable. The second group are despicable and often downright treasonous. Nor is there any comparison between individual gifts to patriotic organizations and the massive funding of destructive leftist organizations by hostile governments. Foreign government funding of leftist NGOs is intolerable.
18. An organization
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (03.05.11)
That receives over half their funds from government(s) cannot be considered NGOs. By definition they are Government supported organizations. If they are funded by foreign governments in anyway and they attack the government then that is an ACT OF WAR period. That is the exact definition. The EU is making war against the State of Israel and it must end.
19. Of course settlement building is illegal.
Cal ,   New York, USA   (03.08.11)
Everyone knows this, it's just that you don't care about the law.
20. Jewish settlement building is legal
(03.09.11)
What is illegal is the White settlement of Manhattan where Indians were cheated out of their ancestors' land.
