1. 400 is a pathetic number
Rachel ,   US   (03.15.11)
Yishai was right. It should have been 1000 for every victim. The problem is your spineless PM.
2. Israel was safer with Shamir than with Rabin
eddie ,   london UK   (03.15.11)
Before the Rabin government, I asked a Labour activist about the risks of dealing with the PLO and giving land. I was told that Rabin was Mr Security. Unfortunately, the security of Israel has deteriorated since Rabin was elected as PM, and his assassination is irrelevant - when he was alive , his policies had led to a violent terror campaign, which he called "sacrifices for peace". The delegitimization is also sourced from Oslo. It was Israel that delgitimised itself, by surrendering its claims to Jerusalem, Yesha, and also gave amnesty to the PLo for their crimes of terror.
3. Barnea is right
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (03.15.11)
Netanyahu was elected on the Likud platform but has taken every opportunity to implement the extreme-Left platform dictated by Obama and Barak. He plans to repeat Sharon: gut the Likud, steal Likud funding and set-up a new Leftist party with Ehud Barak. That explains why he did his best to lose Knesset votes during the last election. His pathetic response to the Itamar massacre, a whining complaint about Abbas' incitement and announcing a plan to build 400 Jewish homes, was only to lull the Likud into complacency.
4. Brilliant and too true.
EM ,   R'ananna   (03.15.11)
5. Partition is the answer. Along the Jordan River.
Ben Yisrael ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (03.15.11)
Jordan is Palestine according to the San Remo Treaty, League of Nations etc. Give the Arabs of Yesha their Jordanian citizenship back and let them stay where they are as residents of Israel. That is the only answer, Nachum.
6. Netanyahu is an incompetent fool
Dan ,   Sydney   (03.15.11)
7. Don't bother; it's lost...
Michael Steiner ,   Bahrain   (03.15.11)
We have a useless government, which is trying to please everyone. To us it is promising progress in reaching a settlement with the Palestinians, while doing everything to ensure it doesn't happen so as to appease the right. Anyone thinking with their brain can surely see that the settlement enterprise is untenable in the long-term, and that insisting on pursuing it is doing us a disservice. I guess, give it 15-20 years, and it will be time for us to have to spend another two millennia in the galut. What we say of the Palestinians is just as true of us: We are our own worst enemy :-(
8. Choice of 2-state or 1 state a deceptive lie, not a dilemma
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (03.15.11)
Whether Israel were to agree to a 2-state or 1-state solution, Arabs are not going to deliver peace. Arabs are committed to eliminating Israel; if not like Hamas, then by stages as per the PA. The only solution will be one unilaterally imposed by Israel and defended by all means. Acknowledging that Arabs aren't really going to deliver peace in any case means unilaterally imposed solutions are just as viable--and some are enormously better for Israel than either the 2-state or 1-state disasters (they are not solutions). The Concurrent Village Network of Arab population centers organized into tiny (non-contiguous) demilitarized protectorates, with sealed borders having secure access, affords self-governance to Arabs--which is what they claim they want. Israel can provide secure access, including travel to their sister protectorates, access to rail and ports, etc. and all of the infrastructure they require to thrive and prosper in peace with us. They could have their own local elections and vote in Jordan if Jordan allows; but not in Israel national elections. Israel should impose it unilaterally, make it happen, defend it at all costs and give the protectorates every infrastructure and opportunity to prosper and live in peace with us. If they choose hostility anyway, then they can be contained, and our security maintained, until they choose peace and prosperity over murder and hate. 9. A Third Non-Suicidal Choice.
Menachem Ben Yakov ,   Yerushalayim Israel   (03.15.11)
Recognize the country of Jordan and the state of the muslims of palestine.
10. New Settlements
Terry James ,   UK   (03.15.11)
There is something truly worrying about the attitudes of your journos and respondents. You think that it is an appropriate response to steal even more of Judea and Samaria? There is a fantastic irony in your attitude with NO respect for any human other than yourselves, the similarity with your former persecutors is striking.
11. false assumptions can only lead to invalid conclusions
tom ,   toronto, canada   (03.15.11)
this essay fails to prove its basic premise. of arabs overwhelming the jewish population or of an "apartheid state" (a term invented by the forces of delegitimization, and a misrepresentation both of israel and apartheid). it also fails to provide any convincing alternative, either on the macro level where it pretends to be (how can pm netanyahu negotiate any lasting agreement with abbas, whose legitimacy stems only from his chairmanship of the plo, and not from his expired term as president of the palestinian cleptocracy?), or on the micro level, where the author offers no alternative to settlement construction, except withdrawal. but withdrawal (and concessions in general) have not led to any form of peace, but only encouraged greater violence. only a complete dolt (or a leftist ideologue) would call the disengagement from gaza a success. isn't the building of towns and villages the best answer, so far, to the violence and hatred of the arab terrorists? the only bit missing is an announcement that these settlements are a memorial to the victims, and as memorials, are sacred to the jewish people (certainly more so than the bogus claims that jerusalem is mentioned in the koran), paid for by the blood of our martyrs, and will never be given up. therefore, each and every terrorist attack will result in a piece of land being removed from the negotiating table. permanently. at least that would give the arabs some small incentive to end the terrorist attacks.
12. To Mr. Barnea
Abraham Nachmias ,   Petach Tikva IL   (03.15.11)
No doubt you know how to write. The problem is that your positions have been defeated time after time for nearly 20 years. However, you, Shimon Peres and others of the same age still believe that either a miracle will happen or that the Israeli people are stupid. Please, recognize that your ideas just represent what's still alive of a past that's better to be forgotten!
13. barnea is pathetic
marcel   (03.15.11)
barnea has no leg to stand on. he is the major journalist who hid the truth about olmert before the election making him appear to be the white prince and not the coward and crook he has alleged to be by lador. That abbas has no interest in peace or even a state which he is too weak to run is proven by olmert sitting with him, talking with him, educating him, eatingdinners with palestinian flags on the table in his deruslame house and abbas rejecting concessions for which olmert should really go to jail for. Rabin tried concessions, big ones, reluctantly and they came to death. barnea wants peace so much that he would do any concession. palestinians are not a nation, not a people whatever they chant and have all to be returned to jordan, all of them according to sand remo 25. everytime barnea writes something, olmert is underneath it and his comments are always pathetic.
14. A collective suicide
Yossef   (03.15.11)
is also a solution, and I'm sure that everybody in the world will appreciate and love us very much after that. BTW Matsada is a place of choice. What are we waiting, then ?
15. Your home is Theeeere.....Our home is Here.
Salma ,   Palestine   (03.15.11)
I Am There I come from there and remember, I was born like everyone is born, I have a mother and a house with many windows, I have brothers, friends and a prison. I have a wave that sea-gulls snatched away. I have a view of my own and an extra blade of grass. I have a moon past the peak of words. I have the godsent food of birds and an olive tree beyond the kent of time. I have traversed the land before swords turned bodies into banquets. I come from there, I return the sky to its mother when for its mother the sky cries, and I weep for a returning cloud to know me. I have learned the words of blood-stained courts in order to break the rules. I have learned and dismantled all the words to construct a single one: Home. by Mahmoud Darwish. .
16. BRAVO Nahum Barnea for speaking the truth!
Rafi ,   US   (03.15.11)
What many people don't realize is that the zealots, settlers, and the right wing in general are continually provoking the West Bank & Jerusalem Arabs (assaults, tree & crop damaging, etc). This in turn produces added bitterness that is readily communicated thruout the Arab & Muslim world. The results of this criminal behavior are obvious... The murders at Itamar are just the tip of the ice berg. The zealots are 100% culpable in creating the previous tense atmosphere - even as they continue to generate more terrorists at this very moment with their "payback" assaults on innocents. The worse part however is yet to come: ultimately this lawlessness is likely to lead to war (or at a minimum intifada) that could involve ALL of Israel. The country as whole will be paying a heavy price for the mischief and malfeasance of the few. Wake up Israel!
17. building has nothing to do with the killing
a ash ,   nyc ny   (03.15.11)
we have to build --what was one have to do with the other
18. Just the opposite is true. if our enemies hurt when they try
elianna ,   Jerusalem   (03.15.11)
When our enemy knows that trying to hurt us they hurt themselves- then there will be a chance for peace.
19. The author is totally correct
John R ,   NYC USA   (03.15.11)
Rabbi Hillel was once asked to describe the Jewish religion in one sentence. He said "Respect your neighbor in the same way you would respect your own family". Harry Truman, who Israel can ultimately thank for its statehood said foreign policy is three things: 1. Foreign Aid 2. Humility 3. A willingness to use force but only if it became necessary America was never more love abroad than when Harry Truman was president. Israel could learn from his wisdom. Israel has never given massive foreign aid to the Pals. Instead they used collective punishment. This is simply another example. The Hebrew language must not have a word for humility Hence Israel always finds it necessary to use force. The settlements are illegal and every country in the world says they are illegal and that position has been consistent for over 30 years. Israel will only be safe when they comply with international law and follow Rabbi Hillel's words.
20. Let us allow NO restrictions on Jewish building.
Chaim ,   Israel   (03.15.11)
Let us allow NO restrictions on Jewish building in Judea and Samaria. This land is ours and has been ours for thousands of years. We have the legal proof. We need merely publicize it better. Nobody freezes building on land they legally own. So there is no excuse for Israel to do so. Period.
21. #7. Judea and Samaria make Israel viable.
Chaim ,   Israel   (03.15.11)
#7. The leftist idea that our settlement enterprise is bad for Israel is ideological and has not the slightest reason to support it. The opposite is clearly true. One need merely glance at a map to see the proof that Judea and Samaria make Israel viable. Without Judea and Samaria, Israel would have an 8 mile (15 minute tank ride) waist. Is that what you want???? Do you want Israel rendered helpless and inundated with rockets and hostile Arabs? Do you want untold legions of foreign troops entering "Palestine" to prepare for the 15 minute tank ride to cut Israel in half? If not, stop spouting nonsense about Judea and Samaria endangering Israel. Any child, of normal intellect, can see it's false.
22. #15 Salma. Your home is elsewhere.
Chaim ,   Israel   (03.15.11)
Mahmoud Darwish wasn't much of a poet and an even worse historian and legal authority. Judea and Samaria legally belong to Jews. It has been proven by countless international legal authorities. Salma, your home is elsewhere. You have the entire Arab world to call home. That is where you belong.
23. Please keep building it going to cost you in the end
Palestinian   (03.15.11)
Wheather we keep what you build , knock it down or we become one state ( my choice) . Israel will lost it's jewy Jewishness . Or settlement become a big waste of money .
24. #23. You don't understand. Judea/Samaria are ours forever.
Chaim ,   Israel   (03.15.11)
#23. You don't understand the situation. We aren't building Judea and Samaria for anyone else. This is our land forever. We're staying. What's really a waste of time and money is building "Palestinian" cities on our land. They will ultimately be ours too. Just as a Chinese built city in New York State rightfully belongs to America.
25. Better to have the land and the problems
BH ,   Iowa   (03.16.11)
than an enemy reichlet within your borders.
26.  to #8
Deutronomy 28 ,   World   (03.16.11)
Choosing peace and prosperity over murder and hate is a very good thing, so why doesn't Israel lead by example and do that? Oh yeah right, it's not in israel's nature to do so... Right moderator? Lol
27. To #11 I agree 100% please read...
Deutronomy 28 ,   World   (03.16.11)
Each time there is a "terrorist attack" Israel removes a piece of land off the negotiation table permanently. And in return each time the Zionist entity called Israel removes a piece of land off the negotiation table permanently, the resistance who values every piece of it's land (much more than the bogus claims of Jews about their delusional promise land) will remove some Jess off the face of the universe permanently... Maybe then and only then Israel will choose peace and prosperity over murder and hatred as #5 said earlier...you up for that deal or just too scared?
28. to 9
NOOR ,   Jerusalem   (03.16.11)
i foun it strange ...in egypt in tunesia in lybia in yemen how the top man was so adherent to the chair did not hear only his voice as if it is his right to rule by right not force after the force is out of his hand .. i think israil in this world want to be israil by its right not more but the world have other calculation , becouse of that i have a sad smile
29. to 25
(03.16.11)
earth is larger than all the problemes but if you loose the land you will be alone with the problemes .salam seedy
30. Nahum needs to know the target
Brod ,   USA   (03.16.11)
The target Nahum is that Judea and Samaria are Israel's liberated historic homeland-Land of Israel. They belong to Israel since ancient time-4000 years ago since the time of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. They are GOD-GIVEN and GOD-RESTORED to Israel as a Fulfillment of GOD"S Covenant to Israel. Just as the Spainish liberated their historic homeland of Spain from the Islamist-Jihadist occupiers in the 15th century, Israel liberated Judea and Samaria-Land of Israel from the Islamist-Jihadist occupiers in 1967. The Land of Israel should be a home to millions of Jews. Israel must continue to build, build and build in the Land of Israel. AntiSemites and Islamist-Jihadists/usurpers want to usurp the Land of Israel. Israel can tell these dark forces to go to Hell. Period.
