Don't blame Israel for Assad's poor leadership record. The land of poverty, unemployment, isolation, oppression and water shortage caused by Turkey cutting water to Syria. Farmers are now living in tents in Damascus because they have no water for crops. This will lead to food shortage if you don't have one already. Arming terrorists instead of taking care of Syrians is coming home to haunt Assad and I'm curious about Iran's role in Syria's current problem.

It's a deterrent for other countries that might think they can attack Israel, lose the war, and then be rewarded by getting the land they lost, back. That makes no sense, and would increase the chance of war, by removing the negative consequences. I do agree with your assessment of the Assad's, and their terrible record with human rights. You did forget at least one other massacre by Hafez. But your dead on about a culture of fear created in Syria, but left out Hamas does the same in Gaza?
