The IDF were doing a great job and were well on their way to achieving their objectives but they wanted another week. Under pressure from Livni Olmert refused to give them that extra week and instead called for an unconditional ceasefire and withdraw of all Israeli troops. The reason was because Cast Lead took place in the middle of election campaign and all parties had put their campaigns on hold during the operation. All the polls had Likud way out in front and so Livni needed to start getting in some campaigning and so Olmert turned what had potential to be a great victory into another humiliation and we went running out of Gaza unconditionally which made us look weak. In America when a President leaves office (except for Jimmy Carter) they try and do everything they can to keep a low profile and not engage in political fighting with the new president. They represent the US with dignity when requested. May Ehud, hopefully will never again occupy the PM office, should take a cue from the ex-US Presidents.
