i arrived in houston, texas in 1948 after having been in belgium during the war.never felt at home there, always a stranger. worked in a jewish store but had to hide my magen david. in an office i said thank you to a coloured office boy and was told that we dont say thank you. my answer was that he has his nose in the middle of his face just like me and you. result:didnt return to my desk. am in Israel since 1949, thank God, and am feeling that i and my children and grandchldren and greatgrandchildren are at home

After the 1948 War of Independence, there were Amiercan Jewish Cowboys that started a ranch near Beersheva
7. Jews, Texas and assimilation, the untold story
mea   (04.11.11)
fact is, ore Jews came through the immigration gates of Galveston than Ellis Island. Many, many, many of them assimilated. This is the generation that vanished into the Texas winds. The great untold story of what happened to Jews who "self-saved" through assimilation in the south....
8. I'm moving to Texas next year
Yaniv ,   Herzelia, Israel   (04.11.11)
i grew up in Israel but i hate it here. I just got my vista to the states and I'm moving to Texas in just under a year:) Any one that would move from there to israel is a big idiot

captaindawg ,   USA   (04.11.11)
a really nice Hassid Rabbi at Ascent in Zfat. He used to be a cowboy in America. He was a smart guy. Peace.
11. Umm... not really
Isaac ,   Texas   (04.11.11)
I am a Texan born and bread. This article, if intended to reflect the majority of Texan Jews' experiences, is flat misleading. I live in Dallas with my Jewish wife and kids, work at a corporation, and commute to work everyday in my car. Sorry, never really liked horses. I belong to a shul of 450 families and grew up at one much larger. While it is true that we are minority and this sure ain't NY, I have rarely experienced antisemitism and have a cordial working relationship with my Christian coworkers. Sorry, but while the stories in this article may be true, they are not representative of the whole Jewish Texan experience. Shalom Y'all.
12. Separate agendas
Michael ,   California, USA   (04.11.11)
It is clear from this article that some people in Israel are still twisting and turning to find something in common with Jews in America, in Texas in particular. There is very little in common, indeed, and I commiserate with the author who had to work very hard to find something to write about. Recognize it, Israel, American Jews have their own separate agendas. Drop the Zionist dream of gathering the exiles, the impossible dream. Become a normal modern nation, a secular nation, and take care of yourselves. By this I mean take care of your internal problems, Israel, take care of your own population. Drop the megalomania Israel. Leave the Jewish cowboys to their bulls.
13. To #12
Jez ,   Modiin Israel   (04.11.11)
Michael, you'd have loved Germany before the war. Those Jews tried to separate themselves as well. Live in Israel, don’t live in Israel, I don’t really care, but one thing is for certain, Israel, despite its problems, is the only place that can guarantee the continuity of the Jewish people and I am afraid you are either in complete denial, really don’t understand world events or are simply to assimilated to care. What’s with the Zionist thing? A Jew by default is a Zionist, maybe not the Arab version, but you really need to get your identity sorted. Hate Israel, love Israel you are still a Jew and that you can never hide.
14. 8#, Yaniv, the idiot is you
Judah ,   Golan Heights,ISRAEL   (04.11.11)
In Texas you will be like a "fish out of water". Just a lonely Israeli far from his family, friends and homeland.
15. 8 What did YOU do to make Israel...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (04.11.11)
a better place?
16. My daughter married a Texan
Babishka ,   USA/Mea Shearim   (04.11.11)
A nice Hasidic boy from Houston. Texas is a very large state and has a large Jewish population, ranging from totally assimilated to very frum. Not every Jew in New York is a diamond-polishing Hasid and not every Jew in Texas is a BBQ-fressing redneck. Why do you stereotype people?
17. #2 - I interviewed Kinky
Seth ,   Washington, DC   (04.11.11)
Kinky Friedman is anything but a Jew for Jesus. In fact, he had a falling out with Bob Dylan following Dylan's brief fling with Christianity. Kinky is a renaissance man and very proud of being Jewish.
18. #9 97%
LAWRENCE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (04.11.11)

20. The problem with raising cows is
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (04.11.11)
They need a lot of space to graze in, in that same amount of space, you can grow tons and tons of vegetables That's the reason Israel has imported it's meats from South & Central America, there's plenty of grazing land and more to spare Cows are like Ethanol, they're not energy efficient If you've ever watched the old Western Movies, the cows roamed a lot of open land, miles and miles of it
21. How are they going to cope?
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (04.12.11)
Coming from vast ranches how are they going to cope with living in the overcrowded overpriced pigeon holes that most of us live in eh? And you call that an "ascent" (aliyah)?
22. 20#,21#,they should come to the Golan
Judah ,   Golan Heights,ISRAEL   (04.12.11)
23. 21 spiritual ascent.
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (04.12.11)
24. Texans Make Great Israelis!
Malkah ,   Jerusalem   (04.12.11)
As a former Texan and current aliyah activist, I believe that Texans make fantastic olim! Not only are they equipped with the necessarily large quantities of both hardiness and "national" pride, they are honest, fun-loving, and good humored people who love being a part of the Israeli immigration adventure. To all my brothers and sisters coming home soon - Shalom Y'all!
25. I would make alyah to Texas
Gabriel ,   Jerusalem   (04.12.11)
God bless you guys!
26. Kinky?
Zyx ,   US   (05.21.11)
