The next time people start thinking the elderly are useless eaters should consider that. Most charities would close without the elderly volunteers to keep them staffed and open, too. When I worked at the V.A. Hospital in West Los Angeles and before that in Tucson, I noticed the Jews in the community were often the volunteers, many full time, getting only a lunch in payment. One Jewish woman at the V.A. Hospital in Tucson had worked as a volunteer for decades full time to pay back the U.S. government for taking care of her son who was a patient there. That's a mitzvoh par excellence.
