1. Is this for real?
John ,   Tel-Aviv   (04.21.11)
NYT, well a proper outlet. Gul would be much better off taking care of his own country, a mediator, my ass.
2. FREE KURDISTAN you hypocrite!
(04.21.11)
3. look at these hypocrites !
bruno ,   Portugal   (04.21.11)
Look at these turks talking from a mouth full of hypocrisy. What about the kurdish or the armenian people in Turkey ? That's what I call real apartheid... It's clear by now that Turkey is picking up a fight, because they have no basis for their accusations against Israel.
4. there is no aparthied in Israel Sir,
Daniela   (04.21.11)
Israel is an OASIS in a dark and violent world of islam.
5. "Apartheid island?"
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (04.21.11)
I wonder what the Kurdish people think about that.
6. Who needs you?
Lippy ,   Proud Israeli   (04.21.11)
Who needs you Gul? Maybe we can arbiter between Turkey and the Armenians and Kurds.
7. Turkey has a big mouth because...
Mike ,   The Netherlands   (04.21.11)
... the world doesn't care of the kurds. Israel should help the kurds rebel to make sure that they will get the world attention.
8. gul and erdogan
alexi   (04.21.11)
I am not olmert and livni. I say to you directly about apartheid and your mediation, you the killers of kurds and 1 million armenians-you know well how to kill the children, I say to you-- the ones who buzz greek planes, I say to you who enabled the IHH to organise terror on the marmora, go to bloody hell.
9. Gul's piece in the NYT
S H Cohen ,   Gaza   (04.21.11)
Gul is living in a fairy land...it is not Israel that has to recognize reality around them...but the Arab nations who have no national democratic traditions...and who quickly descend into extreme sectarian violence...which is the opposite of democracy... S H Cohen
10. Message to Mr. Gul
Maurice ,   Montreal   (04.21.11)
You have so conveniently left out the TOTAL commitment of Hamas to Israel's destruction NO MATTER WHAT happens If Israel gives the West Bank to the Arabs, what gurantees that it will not be taken over by Hamas or other similar enemy dedicated to the destruction of Israel? And your country has proven recently time and again that it supports Hamas which desires ALL ISRAEL annihilated. So do you really expect Isarel to trust you now? You can not be anymore an impartial mediator. I hope your government is defeated in June, and a more impartial government replaces yours. That would be a better outcome for the Middle East, than Israel's capitulation to terrorists.
11. Message to Gul continued...
Maurice ,   Montreal   (04.21.11)
One final note: You are falsley accusing Israel of apartheid! As far as democracy is concerned Israel is LIGHT YEARS ahead of Turkey. EVERYONE in Israel is equal in front of the law. People can speak the language they want without fear, journalists are not arrested and imprisoned because they speak against the government. You should first be ashamed of your actions vis-a-vis Ergenekon and also the Kurds before you accuse Israel of apartheid!
12. Free Kurdistan
Rachel ,   US   (04.21.11)
13. Turks take a hike!
Rachel ,   US   (04.21.11)
14. Someone gave the gull a brain enema
jason white ,   afula, israel   (04.21.11)
That is why he is always spouting fertilizer. If b.s. was energy, this gull would be a power station. By the way, how many unarmed kurds did he kill today? Is someone keeping score? nyt, the toilet paper of the dumb liberal.
15. Kurds, Cypriots, Armenians, ethnic cleansing
eddie ,   london UK   (04.21.11)
crimes of the Turkish state, but perhaps they cannot see their own wrongdoings.
16. turkey
av ,   london.uk   (04.21.11)
the right one to talk .look at your self first before you open your big mouth and give advise
17. Mr. Gul, Don't worry, God will help the Jewish people ; )
Salma ,   Palestine   (04.21.11)
"Israel" will accept only the US as mediator in any "god forbid" coming peace process and that for a aimple reason : "Israel" does not want peace. ( full stop).
18. Turkish President can go to Hell
Brod ,   USA   (04.21.11)
The butcher of Kurdistan has no moral standing to preach to Israel. The Islamist-Jihadist Turks had been butchering the Armenian Christians by the millions at the turn of the 20th century. In recent time, they have been butchering the Kurdish people in Turkey and bombing the Kurdish people in Kurdistan. It is time the scoundrels understand that Modern Israel is in their Ancient Land of Israel. The occupiers, usurpers, aggressors and belligerents are the Islamist-Jihadists who want to cleanse Israel from the Middle East. Israel can tell them and the Turkish President to go to Hell.
19. Gul speaks with 'forked tongue'.
DR ,   Wales   (04.21.11)
As John Wayne used to say "this guy speaks with a forked tongue". His agenda remains clear. To promote an Islamic state in place of Israel and if he can get this via the platform of the Jews ceding more land for false promises, then so be it. There's only one thing that will arise out of the so called "democracy" in the Arab/Islamic world and that is more Hamas type governments. How quickly the media forgets that his man and his government are in league with Iran and Syria. They've already got a military pact and a shared agenda. Stop burying your heads in the Arab/Islamic sands.
20. WHAT ABOUT LEBANON?
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (04.21.11)
Can Lebanon "....afford to be perceived as an apartheid island..."? The way that displaced Palestinian Arabs and their descendants are segregated from the rest of Lebanese citizens,on the orders of the Arab League, certainly marks Lebanon as an apartheid state.Yet not a word from Gul. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
21. Why Turkey?
Zeroing ,   Germany   (04.21.11)
Ironically, Turkey? Of all nations, Turkey should have been the last one to tell Israel what to do with her security and her neighbours. Solve the Kurd problem first. Let Kurds choose what they want through democratic means then come to Jerusalem. Israel had been already in much more hardships then now and it had survived. Israel now flourishes, shines and has outpaced his adversaries big times in science, technology and spirit. Soon there will be new dictators in Cairo, Tunisia, Libya and Syria and elsewhere and Israel will be still there and speeding towards more prosperity and equality for all. Islam ideology is incompatible with pluralisms, unless you want to lie. The hostility against Israel is idelogical and stems from the Quran itself and people don't want to talk about it. How will you stop Muslims from reading their holy book? It is impossible. Therefore it is also impossible to solve this conflict, unless you are willing to waste your money and time for nothing. The conflict will be solved soon and it will be from Jerusalem and not from Brussels, Washington, Cairo or Moscow.
22. Turkey's days in NATO numbered? Probably not.
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (04.21.11)
With racist fools like Gul running Turkey, there is no doubt it will never be able to join the EU. As well, you might think that are big question marks over its future in NATO given the position of the leadership. But then again, historically speaking the military in Turkey has a tendency to clear out corrupt civilian administrations, and there is no doubt that Turkey's current leadership leave a lot to be desired. Turkey's history of aggression, racism and genocide go together with Turkish apartheid rule in occupied Cyprus.
23. As far as I am concerned it is not for Turkey
leo ,   usa   (04.21.11)
to give anti-Apartheid lessons. Neither should Arabs and Muslims.
24. Turkey's Gul in NYTimes on Israel
Gopal ,   Mumbai India   (04.21.11)
The anger of pro isaraeli friends on this is not right.. strip some of the precise choice of words but what's wrong with what Gul says? As a long standing admirer and friend of israel i think what Gul says is true.. as arabs democratise, strategically israel will indeed look like some kind of a pariah state tormenting palestinians.. at least in perception - where you have a poorer and weaker society whatever the history.. If arabs democratise in fact they will start interacting more with israel as friends if not grudging admirers and with lots of good business and education ties.. israel should mount "the galloping horse of history" (shimon peres's phrase) now!
25. Democratic Arab Nations?
Jonny ,   South Africa   (04.21.11)
Another ill informed President who talks about Democratic Arab Nations. Seeing is believing, so far, none of the uprising have led to anything near approaching "Democracy" Egypt has replced one Millitary Leader with another, Tunisia is teetering and has become yesterdays news, Libya, who knows.
26. Arab Palestinians need to change their approach not Israel
Danny ,   Albany, USA   (04.21.11)
It's the Arabs, including those living in the West Bank who need to change their approach to any peace process... it is they who need to start looking making some concessions and compromises. Israel has done more than it share already.
27. facilitating democracy
michel ,   france   (04.21.11)
begins by the own example: Turkey is probably decieving the most of people in the muslim countries who wants real democracy than anybody.
28. Trying hard to appear normal
Paul ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (04.21.11)
Turkey in bending over backwards to win the favor with Arab hardliners, has shown itself to be, not only hostile to Israel, but off-the-scale when it comes to rationality. Turkey will never again play any role in political efforts in the M.E., as long as a half-sane government is in power in Israel. For all the reasons he said Israel must adapt to the new climate in the M.E., is all the reasons to be more uncompromising then ever.
29. Unfortunate friends
Jew ,   Israel   (04.21.11)
The real problem is not Turkey and it's leaders who will consistently lash out against their long time strategic allies but rather the Israeli government that will allow this to continue. Turkey sponsors an illegal and inflammatory flotilla against Israel then demands an apology and Israel jumps. Israel wags a finger at misbehaving Turkish diplomats- Turks demand an apology and Israel jumps. Turks repeatedly allow media tantamount to blood libel against Israel to be aired with full government support, Israel cowers. The reality of the Middle East cannot be allowed to be invalidated just because the Arab world has gone up in a blaze of revolutionary fervor. Every politician that speaks out against the FM Lieberman in his attempt to demand basic respect from the international arena effectively makes Israel impotent.
30. Mr democracy
michel ,   france   (04.21.11)
how about press freedom and women treatement mister?? If they don`t want of you in Europe is for something. You are the best example on how to fail and skip democracy.Because you, nobody believes that a muslim country can be democratic.
