1. Missing you & your resources, Sinai
Mitharet ,   Galil   (04.27.11)
Another perfect reason why we should have held on to the Sinai & its resources...
2. Why is the Government draging its heals on our gas ?
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (04.27.11)
Why is PM Netanyahu not pushing for the gas pipeline the Mediterranean Sea of Haifa to be linked to Israel NOW? Egypt is fast becoming an enemy country again. 52% of Egyptians want the Peace Treaty torn up! We must be independent of Egyptian gas and oil!
3. An easy solution
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (04.27.11)
Israel should stop buying gas from the Egyptians. If Israel is buying at a low price, the Egyptians deserve to sell to someone else. If Israel is buying at a fair price, the Egyptians deserve to plunge deeper into poverty. Also, Israel should immediately suspend all energy transport to Gaza. The Egyptians can sell the gas they were selling to Israel to Hamas instead. Everyone will be happy.
4. What Happened To Israel's OWN Gas?
Edward ,   Savannah, USA   (04.27.11)
I find it interesting that the huge gas/oil fields of the Tamar/Leviathan fields are NOT metioned in this article. Israel should cut a deal with these companies instead of trying to renege on its previous tax rate agreements and those fields would have been further along in their develpment. It looks to me that the State would prefer to pay high priced Egyptian gas than to agree to its previous terms with the companies that founded Israel's gas/oil fields. Maybe when enough Israelis sit in the dark will they get motivated to kick out the current useless batch of professional career hacks in office now that are bring the country down.
5. Need An Insurance Policy
Umm El Kul Naqba   (04.27.11)
The Terrorist Cut Off Gas to Israel. Israel cuts off Gas to Gaza. Let's see them get the message.
6. Pipeline goes through Israel
Ilan ,   Ariel   (04.27.11)
If they cancel the deal then Israel can renegotiate the charges for having a gas line pass through its territory. I wonder who gave that away and why Egypt expects that agreements are not mutually binding.
7. Israel got its own gas source, no need to buy.
ghostq   (04.27.11)
8. Electricity
Jorge ,   Israe/USA/Argentina   (04.27.11)
Israel now has a good excuse to cut electricity to gaza.
9. diversity is the solution
zionist forever   (04.27.11)
We can't be reliant on one source of energy for the bulk of our needs especially something like gas which is dependent on things like pipelines which can be sabotaged or destroyed in wars we need a variety of power generation needs. Lets put more windmills in the Golan so that its more than just a token green gesture which provides very little of the countries energy needs. Solar energy we are playing around with but there is more we can do on that one like making buildings as self sufficient as possible through solar energy. Industrial zones are not designed for architecture they are designed to provide a base for business and business like likes to save money. When these new places are built all free space should be dedicated to placing solar panels & hopefully the place should be able to generate its own electricity needs. Railway stations, gas stations etc which use very little electricity in themselves could have solar panels generate their own power and any surplus sold to Israel Electric. Lets also change building codes obliging developers to build with maximum energy saving materials. Even the most expensive buildings in Israel are built to a very shoddy standard. Nuclear power is always a good source of power and considering the Dimona reactor is over 50 years old there is a justification for buying a new reactor if politically possible. We can start by getting Egypt to start providing the palestinians with their electricity needs. They put a strain on the Israeli grid and the result is so we can provide for them as well taxpayers have to build new power stations. The palestinians see Israel as an occupier so lets not fund their electricity through taxes. Little change in building legislation, stopping supplying to the palestinians and it could lead to big savings
10. tell egypt to take a hike. speed up our own gas production
ralph   (04.27.11)
11. Gas pipeline attack
graczek ,   Maryland, USA   (04.27.11)
This is the payback to Egypt for having continued its perfidious commercial relations with Israel. Perhaps now the new government of Egypt will get the message and stop this obscene commerce!
12. what about the american "guarantees" of camp david?!
tom ,   toronto, canada   (04.27.11)
or aren't they worth the paper they're printed on? to paraphrase tehilim: "o israel trust in the idf!"
13. Move back to coal now!! and stop this nonsense
Al   (04.27.11)
Coal is cheap available and clean. With the new technologies burning coal is clean. You should never ever become dependant on an Egypt. America will never ever back up any quarantee they will pen with you. America is weak and in trouble. They cannot be trusted at this time.
14. Nice Neighbors
Dallas ,   Canada   (04.27.11)
15. I'd give the guys who did this an A+..well done lads!
Peter ,   Vienna-Austria   (04.27.11)
16. Egyptian Gas
IRV ,   USA   (04.27.11)
This is GREAT news. The sooner Israel gets the new found gas flowing the better. We won't have to rely on the freedom loving Egyptians to break another contract. When we begin to export to other countries they won't have to rely on Egyptian extortion because they will have a reliable partner in Israel.
17. #1 if we would have kept sini we would have gone through
Israel ,   Israel   (04.27.11)
another war with Egypt before we would have gotten peace. On the other hand Sini would have made us the booming economy we always only dreamed of, with a combination of natural resources and high tech industries. Not to mention the political power of natural resources. I too think we should have kept Sini. peace with Arabs is always temporary but Land is here to stay.
18. Let them drink it
Shalom ,   Ashdod, Israel   (04.27.11)
The economy of Egypt is in ruins and they cannot afford to lose the foreign currency they get from the sale of gas to Israel, Jordon and Syria. We should stop buying from them and let them drink it all
19. Egyptian military must be complicit...
R ,   Jerusalem   (04.27.11)
this didn't happen under Mubarak, so the new rulers are allowing it. The US needs to stop funding and building up our enemies
20. To trust the Arabs ! ?
AlbertoGA ,   St. George. USA   (04.27.11)
A big mistake, when is the Israeli Gov. will learn ? ? ?
21. gas
miri ,   miami/usa   (04.27.11)
hate to sound like a dumb American frier but didn't Israel find a lot of natural gas inside the country. why do we need egypt. they're not going to shut up until we run them out of Sinai. only this time lets not give it to them when the dust settles. and lets not give them back their boots and sneakers that they leave behind when they run!!
22. TRIPPLE the price of electricity to gaza, EU is paying the
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (04.27.11)
bill and Israel is not getting the gas. If Egypt wants to tear up the peace treaty, then Israel gets back the Sinai and there is NO operation of any gas pipeline to Jordan and Lebanon. Let the egyptians think about the consequences.
23. 22
zionist forever   (04.27.11)
We should quit supplying gas to the palestinians full stop let Egypt do the dirty work. Providing power for millions of palestinians puts alot of strain on Israel's own power grid which means we need to build more power stations ( at israeli taxpayer expense ). The arabs want to have independence and as they hate us so much let them get their power from elsewhere. The arabs walk all over us and we seem to be happy to let them do it.
24. 1 &17
zionist forever   (04.27.11)
AGREED 101% Have either of you ever considered standing for the Knesset? Be nice to have somebody that doesn't think the peace process is the be all and end all of politics.
25. #11 Graczek This is why ...
John ,   Alaska   (04.28.11)
Exactly this is why you will not win. Note, I did not say "cannot" but "will not". You applaud a senseless act of violence that brings _more_ poverty to Egypt and denies a needed "gas supply to Jordan, Lebanon, Syria; to major Egyptian industries and gas consumers in the Sinai". Your post has just said that you prefer poverty and deprivation in multiple Islamic countries, rather than have those same Islamic countries enjoy prosperity that is shared with Jewish Israel. Just like the terrorists acted of their own volition, your post shows your agreement with them. Privation did not come to these Islamic countries by accident, nor by some unchangeable force of nature. It came by choice. The terrorists' choice, and your choice. It's not that you cannot win, but simply that you will not win. The very sad part of your post is, you are going to get what you want. I feel sorry for Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan when you do.
26. to #12 a small clarification
John ,   Alaska   (04.28.11)
First, you are correct. As someone who loves America it hurts to say, you cannot trust us while the current administration is occupying the White House. That you should never have trusted in the sharp, broken reed that is Egypt is self-evident. But O, Israel, trust in the Almighty. One of the best tools He uses to safeguard the peace of His people is the IDF. But it may be important to acknowledge that it is HaShem, rather than the tools He graciously provides, in Whom we trust.
27. DESERTEC for Israel
Farid H. ,   Germany / Morocco   (04.28.11)
Why not join the DESERTEC initiative, or set up a parallel system in the Negev to collect and transform solar heat into electricity? That would considerably reduce your dependency on foreign energy suppliers.
28. Israel should cancel the deal
manny ,   Usa   (04.28.11)
Israel should cancel the deal before Egypt does. It can make up the difference in price by increasing the price of electrcity to Gaza and use of the pipeline transvesring Israel into Jordan.
29. 22, 23 are right, gas shortfall comes out of Gaza allotment
Dr. L. Brnd ,   San Diego, USA   (04.29.11)
Israel should immediately shut off from Gaza all Israeli-supplied gas and electricity supply that comes from the 40% of Israel's capacity lost from Egypt's pipeline. It doesn't come back until the pipeline starts flowing again. All added cost to Israel, direct and indirect, from the shut-off should come from EU "donors" who pay for Gaza's power, just raised their billing through the roof, and tell them to start shipping Israel free LNG and coal if they want it converted to electricity for Gaza - on a cost-plus basis.
