Give this article to the lawyers, that line their pockets with so much money, that its not funny, but i don't think for one minute they would die of shame, for most of the survivors it is turning into other type of holcaust for them
2. Medicare & Medicaid take care of them

5. Elderly survivors
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (05.01.11)
Of course the irony of this situation is that survivors today receive better welfare payments in Germany than in Israel, but that is to Israel's shame and Germany's credit. No wonder that younger Jews leaving Russia and Ukraine prefer to settle in Germany than here - the opportunities are just much better for them. But one thing puzzles me about the poverty amongst survivors. These are people who have been in Israel more than 60 years and have worked hard, brought up families and benefitted from things like unindexed mortgages in the days of hyperinflation. They should have pensions as well, so why are they in such a dire situation? Something must have gone wrong to bring about this sort of crisis, but it doesn't look like the politicians care too much about this issue.
6. Especially the ones that resisted the Nazis

7. what happened?
Robert   (05.01.11)
what happened to all the billions of restitution money paid out? Who is getting it? The lawyers? Every year the government promises to do something about this - again this year a promise- every year there are less survivors- when is something being DONE? After all the survivors are dead?
8. Israel has been ripping off the survivors since reperations
Al   (05.01.11)
started in the 50's and 60's. I should know as my late parents received them like clockwork from the Germans till they died. On the other hand my late Fathers sisters who stayed in Israel after he left for Canada in the 50's never ever got the reperations from the Germans directly but rather thru the Israeli Government. Of couse the Israeli government took their cut and we all know the rest of the story. Thus you have the shame of 1000's of very elderly survivors who have very very little in Israel today. Another fine example of the theft and graft oh so evident in the State.
9. Same story every year - Shame on the government!!
Talula ,   Israel   (05.01.11)
Every year, on the eve of Yom HaShoar, we read about the terrible conditions that Holocaust survivors are living in. Promises are made, and the day after Yom HaShoar, all is forgotten. It makes me feel so angry and so sad for these folk who have been through so much. Time for the government to stop buying themselves new cars, and take care of them once and for all so their last years of their lives are spent dignified not alone and hungry.
10. Is there an organization where I can volunteer
Talula ,   Israel   (05.01.11)
I would happily go and visit these people, do their shopping and spend time with them. Anyone know where I start?
11. I think many of them came from Russia in the 90s
Ze'ev ,   Lod   (05.01.11)
That's the reason they don't have savings or a normal pension. Of course the well-being of the survivors is state's responsibility, but I must ask where are their children?
12. #5 + #11
Dorothy friend ,   Tel Aviv   (05.01.11)
Being as I come from a family of survivors I comment a little on #5 - my father didn't get a lot of renta, people who settled in the USA received the least of anyone because the Germans figured the USA was a rich country. Many of his friends in Israel, the kind of folks #5 mentions, were totally ripped off by their children. Instead of saving their renta their old age they poured it into their children, apartments and trips and then to the grandchildren. They are getting very little help from their children in return, and not of this is the country's fault. It is a crime to blame the country for family dysfunctions, and as readers know, I am not the cheerleading patriot type. As for #11, you are right, the Jews who came from the former Soviet Bloc in the 1990 had no renta from Germany and brought no savings with them,

14. Israel the chosen land
Jason ,   NY   (05.01.11)
The german govt gave over 85 billion dollars, plus israel received hundreds of billions of dollars from the US during the last 60 years and still thousands of holocaust survivors are in poverty, you have justified taking land from the palestinians on flimsy grounds Israel doesnt follow biblical law and now we know how they steal money from holocaust survivors israel is a sham
15. To Dorothy and Ze'ev
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (05.01.11)
I receive a renta directly from Germany , but to live from it is impossible . I'm lucky that i worked and receive a pension from my country of origin . And so can enjoy life here , at HOME , without receiving one agora from the State . Most people who made Alyah after the war , had the opportunity to work , save money and have a normal pension . The poor are certainly those who Ze'ev mentions , but there i have doubds too . Are they truly poor ?
16. #15 -yes
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (05.01.11)
The elderly Russians are really at the short end of the stick. They were not allowed to claim restitution from Germany under the Soviets, and many of them came here when already retired, and even if they could collect their pensions from Russia they are now devalued and worthless, so they are dependent on National Insurance and maybe some odd jobs (i always pay the elderly Russian buskers generously for the pleasure they give me when I walk down the street). These are the guys I feel for.

I'd rather jump from a tall building, catch my eyelid on a nail on the way down and land in nuclear waste than volunteer or even speak to a bunch of misfits with warped minds. But thanks for the offer.

Thank you for groups that can help. One more needs to be added. His name is Adelson. Instead of printing a free biased newspaper he should put his vast fortune into helping holocaust survivors. If he can contribute over 100 million dollars on such fools as the Republican party he can instead help Jews.
