31. Can I get "Jew" erased from my Teudat Zehut?
Michael ,   California, USA   (05.03.11)
I support writing "Israel" as his place of birth. Now, please agree with me in demanding the word "Jew" be erased from my T.Z. and be replaced by "Cultural only, Jew." Thank you for your overwhelming support.
32. NOT TO WORRY...
Frank-el ,   Seattle USA   (05.03.11)
The 3 Jewish justices on the Supreme Court will tip the scales in favor of Congress on this point. Not to worry, tribal loyalty will supercede allegiance to the Constitution. Although the "debate" will be about the "law", the subtext will rule in the end. The media will go into overdrive, there will be whispers of "anti-semitism" regarding Jerulsalem and AIPAC will hound its bought Reps and Senators into the subtle full court press. I'm sad to say it is all about politics in the end. Perhaps the birth certificates could say "West Jerusalem, Isreal"?
33. Our biggest mistake was stopping at the the Kotel.
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (05.03.11)
and we will suffer for it forever.
34. To: No. 14
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (05.03.11)
Jerusalem has always been a Jewish city. It is Israel's national capital. If that galls you -- good. Choke on it!
35. America Pick a Side
Dallas ,   Canada   (05.03.11)
It's time. To continue dancing around facts, walking on eggshells afraid to call out the terrorists and haters on their evil, to continue the charade of P-C which also twists minds in the West, is ignoring the lessons of history. We have enough Chamberlains. Time for some real leadership.
36. jerusalem east & west
m davis ,   jerusalem   (05.03.11)
as one who lives in jerusalem (currently west) I really dont have a problem with the fact that the state department sees as an international conflict- my problem is that im unsure in what way the western half is contested. unfortunately something which may have had an easy compromise (regard west as Israel and east as none) has become an issue for constituitional law, something which its quite difficult to see congress' side on
37. Is Jerusalem part of Israel?
Bruria   (05.03.11)
So, what country will they say he is born in then--can't be Palestine as it isn't even a country. What a bunch of crap!
38. No It Isn't.
Salma ,   Palestine   (05.03.11)
According to international law Jerusalem is Occupied Palestinian territory
39. @29 King David didn't found Jerusalem, he conquered it!
Israela ,   Israel   (05.03.11)
Your lack of historical and Biblical knowledge is showing. Abraham came to Shalem which is the ancient name of Jerusalem so if Abraham came to Shalem how is it that King David founded it? Really?! Really! Really!
40. US State Dept
Mark ,   USA   (05.03.11)
Tell them to shove it...the bunch of Jew-haters. Any Jew born in Jerusalem is born in Israel..end of discussion. Let the US Supreme Court go chew on a dog bone.
41. #31 Michael
David N. ,   Haifa, Israel   (05.03.11)
There is really no such thing as a "cultural Jew." We are born with a Faith, a Nationality, and a Land. All efforts at seperating any one of the three from the other has had negative consequences for the House of Israel. Assimilation, abandonment of Israel, destruction of faith. You live in America? Just be a Californian and forget about Israel. It can never mean all that much to an atheist or non-believer.
42. @31 you must have an old TaZ (T.Z.)
(05.03.11)
because since 1989 the only way to know if someone is a Jew via their TaZ is because their Hebrew birth date is included next to their Gregorian calendar birth date.
43. @38 wrong!
(05.03.11)
according to the UN international agreement (not international law, international agreement) Jerusalem is listed as an International City. (I'm surprised at you generally you aren't that ignorant, what happened this time?)
44. THE US STATE DEPT.IS JUST AS STUPID AS HAMAS AND FATAH
GLENN ,   YUCAIPA,USA   (05.03.11)
45. #31 - how old is your teudat zehut? ID
michael redbourn ,   arad, israel   (05.03.11)
For many years now "Jewish" hasn't appeared on the teudat zehut. (ID) If you are Jewish, then the date appears in Jewish and Latin formats. If you're not Jewish, then it only appears in the Latin format.
46. #38 - please don't invent International Law
michael redbourn ,   arad, israel   (05.03.11)
Legally, international law expert and jurist Stephen Schwebel, who later became president of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, wrote in 1970 that "Israel has better title in the territory of what was Palestine, including the whole of Jerusalem, than do Jordan and Egypt." And read post #14 too ..
47. 38 -Jerusalem Belongs to Jews, by International Law
jane ,   London UK   (05.03.11)
Jacques Gauthier, a non-Jewish Canadian lawyer who spent 20 years researching the legal status of Jerusalem, has concluded: "Jerusalem belongs to the Jews, by international law." Gauthier has written a doctoral dissertation on the topic of Jerusalem and its legal history, based on international treaties and resolutions of the past 90 years. The dissertation runs some 1,300 pages, with 3,000 footnotes. Gauthier had to present his thesis to a world-famous Jewish historian and two leading international lawyers - the Jewish one of whom has represented the Palestinian Authority on numerous occasions. Gauthier's main point, as summarized by Israpundit editor Ted Belman, is that a non-broken series of treaties and resolutions, as laid out by the San Remo Resolution, the League of Nations and the United Nations, gives the Jewish People title to the city of Jerusalem. The process began at San Remo, Italy, when the four Principal Allied Powers of World War I - Great Britain, France, Italy and Japan - agreed to create a Jewish national home in what is now the Land of Israel.
48. Why do they need it?
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (05.03.11)
Why don't they just write "Jerusalem"? The country of birth is irrelevant on a foreign passport - only the place of birth. On my wife's British passport her birth place says "Hadera", not "Hadera, Israel". If he is an American citizen, why is he fighting so hard to have another country's name on his passport? Ridiculous.
49. Supremacy
Mark of Lewiston ,   Lewiston USA   (05.03.11)
The US Constitution has a "supremacy" clause: "This Constitution and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof, and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land, and the judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any thing in the constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding." In 1922, the Court applied the Supremacy Clause to international treaties, holding in the case of Missouri v. Holland, 252 U.S. 416 (1920), that the Federal government's ability to make treaties is supreme over any State concerns that such treaties might abrogate states' rights arising under the Tenth Amendment. The issue is one of Executive vs Legislative authority and the weight of treaties that have been ratified by the US Senate, like the Geneva Conventions. Bush ran afoul of the Geneva Conventions, those "quaint anachronisms" of a bygone era. The Court upheld them, but before all the current court was appointed.
50. What would be his birth place if he was born in Jerusalem
Omri ,   Israel   (05.03.11)
if not Israel? The free state of Jerusalem? Palestine? XD
51. The issue goes deeper that what is being said here,
Josh   (05.03.11)
This is realeted to Personship, Jurisdiction and citizenship. Who cares anymore.
52. To confused Salma
Markos ,   Addis Ababa   (05.03.11)
I know you have been taught lies that "Palestine" was stolen from your people by colonists from Europe but, unfortunately, Salma, don't mean to bust your bubble but "Palestine" never existed as a sovereign state or people in 1964, so how can the capital of the State of Israel be a capital of an entity that is non-existent ? Think on that one Salma!
53. #41, An atheist does not forget Israel
Michael ,   California, USA   (05.03.11)
A majority of Jews in the U.S. are atheists and yet they continue to support Israel financially and politically (with and without well intentioned criticism.) To them, and to me, faith has no bearing on supporting Israel. Actually, in my reading of the history of Israel, faith destroyed Israel and led to its occupation many times. But more importantly, in all the wars since 1948 in Israel, victory was achieved not because of faith, but through very pragmatic, down to earth, secular performance.
54. One way to approach this
Steve from Raleigh   (05.03.11)
Is for Israel to say that any nation which does have its embassy in Israel's capital does not have full diplomatic status with Israel.
55. RE- #47
VICTOR GUTIERREZ ,   TORONTO, CANADA   (05.05.11)
You forgot to add to your comment, that the San Remo Conference was the Conference setting up ALL the contries which were part of the Ottoman Empire, all the way from Iraq to Yemen, and from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, all the Emirates (Dubai and the others) to Syria and Lebanon. Those who do not agree with Israel, which was supposed to have included ALL of current day Jordan but was truncated by the British, also should have a problem with all the other contries which comprised the Ottoman Empire.
