Israeli 2   (05.13.11)
"The Israeli court's ruling should have been enough to prevent Germany from ever holding a trial." What ticks me of is that the Israeli judges now say that 'justice, albeit late, has finally been served. The Israeli JUDGES aquitted him!!!

The problem is, he was. He was brought to court in Israel, and exonerated. This at a time when there were survivors left to testify for, or against him. Today, he is an extremely old man, and the persons who could have acted as witnesses are either dead, or themselves old. '

Melanie ,   Germany   (05.13.11)
#24 He was long enough in the USA to put him on trial which you even tried to do, so you guys have no right to complain! #33 So you guys say we should bend the law like you Yanks do it all the time? Do I have to remind you that way too many Nazis managed to escape because of the USA? Look up "Operation Paperclip" on Google to find out more!
38. at least symbolically...
tom ,   toronto, canada   (06.10.11)
there may be no actual difference, but a "5-year sentence" and a "life sentence" send completely different messages. it was up to the german court to decide whether he was guilty or not. they found that he was guilty of being an accomplice to the murder of 27,900 people. 5 years, even if he serves the full time, works out to 1.5 hours per person murdered. is that a just punishment? is that the current going rate in german courts? would a serial killer serve his time and be home for dinner? not condemning him to a life sentence speaks volumes about the court and the trial: a symbolic gesture, aimed more at rehabilitating germany, in its own eyes and in the eyes of the world, than at actually serving real justice.
