1. This also why
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (05.18.11)
That this is merely the 1st round of revolutions. It will continue until these artificial states created by colonial powers are reduced to a level of stability by splintering into clan size fragments.
2. Looks the Same in the USA
Edward ,   Savannah, USA   (05.18.11)
Obamafraud and the banksters are stealing OUR wealth over in the USA as well!!! I just received a notice yesterday that the U.S. government is going to take ALL of the money out of the pensions funds and replace them with I.O.U.'s just like they did Social Security. When they pull every single penny that they can steal out of this country, they plan on hightailing it to Europe to the Rothchilds clan and let this country burn!!! Maybe these people are learning economics from obamafraud!!!??? Sure looks the same!!!
3. What
David ,   Haifa   (05.18.11)

4. I'm Egyptian
Mohammed ,   Cairo Egypt   (05.18.11)
If you were here, you would have seen that rich people than poor who started and lead,of course the poor followed but the main cause is bread freedom and social justice.Everybody ve risked his work today for future democracy and justice.
5. Violent times ahead!
אברם   (05.18.11)
Israel you’ll soon be forced into some drastic actions. Do not hesitate for one millisecond, or all will be lost.
6. It is neither about capitalism. nor hunger or democracy
Marco ,   Spain   (05.18.11)
It is about Arab society's sick approach that one group wants to overturn the ruling group and become the new ruler. Then they will be able to enjoy anew of corruption, dictatorship and oppressing the rest of the population. A lot of it has to do with Islam's totalitarian view on society. If Arabs want to begin a real movement toward democracy, a clean government, rule of law, human rights, women emancipation, minority rights and prosperity the first step is to get rid of Islam.
7. The author has it backwards.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (05.18.11)
It is the ABSENSE of real capitalism, of free enterprise, of limited gov't. interference in the economy, that causes problems. Most of the problems in the Arab world are due to the failed legacy of Socialism, of Statism which morphed into a parody of capitalism which can be called crony capitalism. We know all about crony capitalism in Israel, don't we? The left-wing American Democrats of the Obama type & the Social Democrats of the failed & very undemocratic European Union are similar. This is all complicated by the fact that Islam is essentially anti-capitalist, hence the alliance with left-wing elements within their own countries & abroad. Capitalism is the cure, not the disease.
8. On the subject of ''revolutions'' ....
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (05.18.11)
The author cites the French revolution & the Russian revolution. Both were disasterous failures. The French revolution turned into a bloodbath & led to the dictatorship of Napolean & even more bloodshed. The Russian revolution became an evil tyranny which caused the death of millions. The only successful revolution in modern times was the American revolution which was based on limited government, individual freedom FROM government.
9. the arab war on capitalism
pozarski ,   Warsaw, Poland   (05.18.11)
It seems you've penned a short version of Communist Manifesto. Why not? Paper can bear heavier weights.;)
10. No. 2, the Rothchilds are right there damaging your city
Marco ,   Spain   (05.18.11)
Spanish moss covered trees lined along the squares of Savannah. No need for you to go so far to Europe, just look under your bed and you'll find all the Rothchilds your heart desires.
11. Where does Yenet find these socialist dinosaurs?
NB ,   TA   (05.18.11)
12. IT'S T-SHIRT DEMOCRACY
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (05.18.11)
The Arab protesters were using democracy as a slogan not as a banner. It was a case of "Look at me!!I'm a democrat and I'm wearing a T-shirt that says so." But in the end,it didn't take much to stop the Egyptian protests.Just vague promises by leaders of what is,in effect a military takeover with an Arab League agenda.Democracy is nowhere in sight. It wont take long for the situation to return to normal with even more pointless, comfortable government jobs on offer. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
13. Capitalism is a stupid label to use, cause most people don't
Yaniv ,   Israel   (05.18.11)
understand really what it means. Small government is easier to understand. What is required for freedom to reign, which is the opposite of totalitarianism, people must control their own finances, because money is power and if the government controls the finances they have all the power. Secondly, you need freedom of the press/speech. And lastly, the freedom to own and bear arms, because if you can't defend yourself against oppressive governments or individual criminals, you are dead.
14. Kleptocracy isn't capitalism

16. what about the israeli leaders
abdalla   (05.18.11)
they are the same
17. Democracy
Leonard ,   LA usa   (05.18.11)
Democracy is mob rule. It might be ok for a start but a republic is what any country needs if the people want to be free.
18. Prove it No. 16, Arab liar
Marco ,   Spain   (05.18.11)
All Arabs do is tell fables and lie day and night. The Arb mind is not open enough not to explain everything without blaming others. Arabs will never leave their dark past unless they accept responsibility for their own failures without pointing a finger at irrelevant topics.
19. @ #4
Iranian Jew ,   LA   (05.19.11)
Mohammed! I sure hope you get all you wish for with your revolution. It will take years to show it's affects. Let's hope by then another Mubarak is not created. So far no revolution but USA type has shown more positive signs. I hope you won't copy the Iranian Revolution which was a disaster for the majority. A huge minority get their wish by force and killing. That's all.
20. Avaram Goldsmith #15
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (05.19.11)
It's school not Scholl. It's writers not writters. You wrote writters and used this, either it should have been a singular writer or these instead of this. Maybe elementary school would help you.
21. bomb syria with prophylactics
sweeter than honey ,   far away   (05.19.11)
and egypt too. much too great a population for the economy. family planning and national planning as one, see china. otherwise an infinite number of people into a finite amount of resources (employment opportunities, fresh water, etc.) does not compute.
22. Not just in Arab States
Nina ,   NYC   (05.19.11)
The same will happen here in US sooner or later unless our shameless and greedy Oligarchs stop looting the country. The scumbags at Heritage and Cato Institutes are now after the US gold reserves to avoid paying higher taxes.
23. planning something for England?
yoheved ,   north miami beach, f   (05.19.11)
are they planning something for England? the queen and her family are worth hundreds of billions ... much of that from the natural resources from Africa ... which are also mainly muslim now ...
24. They don't understand what democracy is...
Potash Katiftof ,   tel aviv, israel   (05.19.11)
I don't think that the arabs understand what democracy really means. Democracy only works if everyone feels very strongly about accepting others ideas and concepts. In the arab world, they think as democracy as a way of imposing their own beliefs, not helping others form theirs.
25. #1, #16
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (05.19.11)
Or, like is happening in Libya and Ivory Coast, that the colonial powers militarily destroy these states and steal their natural resources. #16 I think Abdalla was talking about people like Olmert, Omri and Gilad Sharon, Ehud Barak (according to Ramon) and others.
26. You got it wrong baby
Fahd alharby ,   Madina , S. Arabia   (05.19.11)
It is really a weak article although you attracted me by the great under studied subject .Your title got correct, but your wishy wash polemics is off the mark .For one the subject of revolutions are always complex and cannot be explained by one factor . You are right the in the way you did not say it, the Arab government are busy fighting the best machine ever invented to create wealth : capitalist system , I mean it with all what entails from sound corporate governance, sound tax system, equality in opportunity, transparent legal system..etc.. The only countries that were able to chase the West successfully are the far eastern countries, and it is notable (you are right ) they did not care much about democracy until they achieved the critical mass in economic well beings, as of now all the Arabs want is a populist regime that the promise more government jobs and subsidies that bound to create more corruption and authoritarian regimes . The morality element is always there in equal proportion in advanced and less advanced countries . I think your piece is very confusing to say the least . I am glad you avoided the simplistic Western especially American call for freedom and democracy possibly without good intentions but surely misleading policy diktat . Let us wait Obama speech, I reckon he will continue his off the marks statements if not his deliberations.
27. How quaint! There are still commies out there!
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (05.19.11)
Amnon Shamosh is obviously a member of an endangered species: Marxist-Leninists. The Arab revolution? Will affect us like the Soviets? How sweet! I can't wait for it to happen! And, of course, we always knew that it was that secret cabal of world-bankers who were pulling the strings of the ordinary working-class Arab and propping up the dictators...so that the military-industrial complex robber-barons could exploit the workers all over the world by controlling the price of Arab oil!!! Yes, that must be it! How quaint! Let the Arab workers unite and throw off the yoke of capitalist tyranny!!! Quick...somebody please post the words to the internationale..... 1, 2, 3 all together now...."Sollllidarity foreeeeeever...!"
28. Mecca and Medina will be nuked
Marco ,   Spain   (05.19.11)
Iran has many targets in its crosshairs. Number one on their list is to destroy the Sunni entity in the Hejaz together with the Piggy Pagan places of sin there. All the talk about Israel is only a diversion tactic used by the Shia entity and will catch the Saudi Mafia family (or what will be left of them) by surprise. Camel riders living in the only country in the world named after one crime family have nothing to teach humanity.
29. #28
Fahd alharby ,   Madina   (05.20.11)
Cool your Helsinki a bit , it is only intellectual Discussion unless you think you want every country to emulate Spain by borrowing and taking long naps and living off German hard work , and thinking you are. Modern Europeans.
30. Arabs want National Socialism
Moshe ,   Netanya   (05.20.11)
Nasser and Baas parties were close to it. Italy and Germany had it in the 1930s. Close to 90% supported it in the respective countries. That how progressive Arab intelligencia model their contries.
