31. Obama does an about-face.
Steve   (05.22.11)
Firstly, I do not accept the notion that Israel should relinquish any of our precious land. That having been said, Obama backed down on language contained in an April 2004 letter Ariel Sharon received from George W. Bush, thereby accepting what he (Obama) previously rejected. YNet quoting Obama today: "It is a well known formula to all who have worked on this issue for a generation. It allows the parties themselves to account for the changes that have taken place over the last 44 years, including the new demographic REALITIES ON THE GROUND (emphasis mine) on the ground and the needs of both sides." Bush wrote Sharon in 2004: "In light of new REALITIES ON THE GROUND, including already existing major Israeli populations centers, it is unrealistic to expect that the outcome of final status negotiations will be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949, and all previous efforts to negotiate a two-state solution have reached the same conclusion." Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, until now, have been adamant in their refusal to recognize the Bush letter. This man will do anything to be re-elected.
32. "... and permanent Israeli borders with Palestine"
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (05.22.11)
I find Obama's reference to "two states, with permanent Palestinian borders with Israel, Jordan, and Egypt, and permanent Israeli borders with Palestine" a rather curious one. Does he mean that Israel would *not* have borders also with Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt but only with Palestine? A look at the map shows how silly that would be. But consider also his suggestion that Palestine would be "contiguous" - not the West Bank, but Palestine. That implies some sort of land bridge between Gaza and the West Bank - which would make Israel *non*-contiguous. What's unrecognized is that Gaza and the West Bank are as different from each other as were Pakistan and Bengla Desh before they too split off. Bringing them together only guarantees that Hamas will take over the West Bank.
33. "Commitment": of a flip flopper.
Shalom ,   U.S.A.   (05.22.11)
American jew! Wake up! Your existence is at stake!
34. Obama Cannot Be Trusted
Roy Chweidan ,   Netanya. Israel   (05.22.11)
I agree with no 4,5 and 17. Obama's word means nothing. He is the worst of the worst and also the most dangerous because he is a brilliant orator. If you analyse what he does, it proves he is pro Moslem and his promises to Israel are false. He is strongly anti Israel. Unfortunately Obama,s lies, because he is so convincing, is fooling the great American nation. However some Americans are waking up and for the benefit of the free world, hopefully he will be defeated in2012. Roy Chweidan, Netanya. Israel
35. One thing is very, very clear
Steve G ,   NYC   (05.22.11)
One thing is clear, it's time for the haredi to move their chubby posteriors off the benches and into military training. Israel is going to need all the armed defenders it can muster in the face of the looming world-wide threat. Attempting to sit this one out will get you murdered.
36. He is playing with words, but saying nothing different
Jake   (05.22.11)
Obama continues to cite the "pre-'67 lines" as the basis of any future agreement. The so-called "mutually agreed swaps" with which Obama is trying to sweeten this poison-pill means that if Israel annexes X amount of land to annex Jewish settlements, it will be required to give to a future palestinian state X amount of land from pre-1967 Israel, even though no palestinian state existed at the time. Note, Abbas has refused to accept Israeli Arab towns as part of any such territorial 'swap'. Note also, what Obama did not say. He did not revoke his previous words that a future palestinian state would border Jordan, meaning Israel would not be able to have a presence in the Jordan valley.
37. what do you want from Barak Obama?
chaim schonbrun ,   brooklyn ny   (05.22.11)
am not a fan of Hussein Obama to put it mildly, but i really don't understand all the flack he is getting for suggesting Israel agree to a palestinian state based on the borders of pre 1967 with certain adjustments.after all this is exactly the position of all the traitorous self hating leftist's in Israel, this is the position of their president Shimon Peres, this is the position of traitorous enemy colaborating, back stabbing Zippy Livni, who heads Kadima, the single largest party in the Knesset, this is the position of Israel's own defence minister the coward Ehud Barak, this is the position of the most influental leftist jew hating rag, the Haaretz.,and this is the position of 90% of the atheistic leftist media in Israel,And of course i am not even talking about the tens of thousands of the ultra chareidim, who would not care a bit if the state of Israel dissolved and dissapeard and would revert back to turks or the british. [the yiddish newspaper DER YID,had an editorial this week, asking,;wouldn't we be better off with Israel under british rule] So tell me,why should Hussein Obama be a bigger Zionist and a lover of Israel than a very large part of Israeli citizens themselve ? Honestly ,   Jerusalem   (05.22.11)
Are we CRAZY?????
43. Oh! I am so glad Bibi spoke so openly and honestly.
Harry Wright ,   UK   (05.22.11)
That proves they are real friends!!!!!? Obama has at his disposal the finest experts in the English Language. Why does he always have to say something then turn around and explain it? He has a serious problem and I hope that he now understands that he will be challenged every time he tries to sneak in his nonsense. He is not dealing with the Chicago street crowd. What he now wants to impress upon everyone is that the '67 borders cannot stand after 44 years of changes that had taken place and that the parties must sit and negotiate to arrive at mutually acceptable swaps. What is so hard in that? It only proves that he is a deceitful liar playing with words who must be cornered and pinned down to say what he means. That does not reflect very well on him nor provide much confidence and it certainly reinforces the need to be extremely vigilant with what this wily man says. We do know that he says one thing today and the complete opposite the next day. Furthermore, somebody needs to tell him that it is not "I and my administration". It is "My administration and I". I thought that was basic manners.
44. where does our help come from
Allan Baerg ,   Vancouver Canada   (05.22.11)
Obama is not the Messiah. I hope Israel doesn't get duped by the "Make no mistake, we will maintain Israel’s qualitative military edge," talk.
45. Obama cannot be trusted
Maurice ,   Los Angeles, USA   (05.22.11)
He has shown time and time again that he is not a friend of Israel. I hope this time it will be enough to lose the Jewish vote. If he gets re-elected he will act more bodly as won't have to worry about running again. This would be a catastrophe for Israel and America.
46. #29 - as big a con artiste as...

Bibis Mileikowsky?
47. Mr President
Alex ,   USA   (05.22.11)
You said in your speech, what the Jews wanted to hear. But it was for election purposes. Unfortunately for you, it's not going to work this time. The Jews realized that trusting in your promisses means would be a mistake. Israel has to defend itself not just from the Arabs, but from some " friend " as well.

53. Obama's speech
Bertram ,   London, UK   (05.22.11)
I should be dismayed by the utter shallowness and naivety of many of these talkbacks, but I am not because they are so predictable (including the pathetic 'Muslim' jibes). All the talk about friendship between Israel and the US, indeed between any nation-states, is nonsense and we all know it. The point is that all countries attempt to act in their own interests. When those interest more or less coincide war recedes into the background, sometimes for a very long time. That is the stuff of international relations and diplomacy and it can happen - and has happened - even between sworn enemies. For hundreds of years the French and the British were at war with one another until mutual self-interest began to dominate and peace has reigned for over a century. The situation with regard to Israel and what many now call Palestine (or, if you like, the Arabic-speaking people living in Judea and Samaria, or whatever) can be resolved if politicians on all sides begin to act with intelligence, seek out mutual interests and stop shooting from the hip, both metaphorically and literally. Obama's speech is a start.

Alex ,   USA   (05.22.11)
You are 100% right . I wish the leaders of Israel will realized the need for the increased strength of the armed forces. in the immediate future.
57. 1967 - final borders?
(05.22.11)
Those who heard Obama say that Israel should return to the 1967 borders are half-deaf or just dumb. Obama clearly mentioned land swaps.
58. #38 Salma
Jake ,   toronto   (05.22.11)
You did not answer my previous post. You are right 2011 is not 1948 or 1967. Why did not Palestinian had separated from Jordan or from Egypt between 1948 and 1967? Where was the PLO during that time? It did not exists. Which confirms that Palestinians are just Arabs that belong to either Egypt or Jordan. Have the courage to respond.
59. Borders
moshe ,   Jerusalem   (05.22.11)
When Obama says to go back to the "67" borders does he mean the June "67" borders?
